Helen Wimberley Farmer
Mrs. Helen Marie Wimberley Farmer passed from this life to life eternal with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 15, 2015. She was 87 years of age and her death was the result of a short term battle with cancer.
Mrs. Farmer was born in the Springville community on March 29, 1928, as the daughter of Dennis and Marybell (Atchison) Wimberley, both of whom proceeded her in death. She graduated from Puryear High School in 1946 and went into nurses training at Henry County General Hospital. It was there that she met a young Army veteran, just home from World War II. Paul Farmer swept her off her feet and came to be the love of her life. They were married on December 7, 1946, and had 58 years together before he passed away in 2005. Their union produced three children.
Mrs. Farmer was truly the matriarch of the family and leaves behind a legacy of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will forever be influenced by her strong faith. Children are: Johnny and Steve Farmer, both of Springville, and Pam Farmer-Walker, of Smyrna. Mrs. Farmer had an especially close relationship with her two daughters-in-law, Johnny’s wife, Marian Tyler Farmer, and Steve’s wife, Lyn McDonald Farmer.
Grandchildren include: Rusty Farmer and wife, Candise (Moody) of Paris; Jody Farmer and wife, Beth (Steedly) of Camden; Amy Lamping and husband, James, of Clarksville; Chasity Jackson, of White House; and Cody Walker and his fiancé, Trisha Spears, of Morrison.
She also had seven great grandchildren, who were so precious to her: Julia Helen, Jack Ryan, and Benjamin Paul Farmer; James Tyler, Harper Rose, and Johnny Tucker Lamping; and Hayden Davis Spears Walker.
Additionally she leaves a sister, Sue Medlock, of Paris, two sister-in-laws, Marcy Wimberley, of Paris, and Jean Wright, of North Carolina, along with numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Wimberley.
She was a member of Springville Baptist Church for most of her life. She served her church in a variety of capacities, including being a Sunday school teacher, and since the 1970s led the Women’s Missions group. She worked for the school systems in both Paris and Henry County from 1971 until her retirement. She was a teacher’s aide and worked in a number of different schools including Springville, Buchanan, Inman, and Rhea.
In addition to working for the school system, Mrs. Farmer was a farm wife who worked beside her husband on their farm, known as Lakeside, where they raised registered Polled Hereford Cattle. But of all the jobs she ever had, being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was the one she treasured the most.
Visitation will be at Ridgeway Funeral Home on Saturday evening, May 16, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be officiated by her son, Johnny Farmer, who is the pastor of Bethany Baptist Church. The service will be both a worship and a celebration of the life of Helen Farmer and will be conducted by her family at Springville Baptist Church on Sunday, May 17, at 2:00 p.m., with a brief visitation starting at 12:30 p.m. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Poplar Grove Cemetery.
Flowers are beautiful, but their beauty fades so quickly. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her memory to one of the following entities, all of which Mrs. Farmer supported:
