GRIFFITH, WILLIAM, JR., age 87, of the Griffith’s Creek Community went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, October 23, 2014. He was of the Methodist faith and retired from Koehring Southern Co. in Chattanooga and also a coal miner. He was born January 27, 1927 to William Sr. and Mattie McGowan Griffith who preceded him in death along with his brothers, Stan, Lee, Max, Jim and J. C. Griffith; sisters, Ida Layne, Beatrice Kilgore and Avene Norris. He was survived by his wife of 66 years, Rachel Slatton Griffith; children of his heart, Jeannie (Buddy) Richardson, Jeremy (Marie) Robinson, Rebekah (Wally) Nolan and Norman (Tisa) Robinson; brother, Oakland (Tootsie) Griffith; a host of loving family and friends. A special thanks to NHC of Dunlap and Hospice of Amedisys for going above and beyond their duties. Funeral services were held Sunday in the Layne Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Jeremy Robinson officiating. Burial followed in the Griffith Creek Cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

ROGERS, GENE O. “EYEBALLS”, age 78, of Altamont, passed away Friday, October 24, 2014. He was elected in 1978 as the Grundy County Road Superintendent serving for 12 years. He was a US Army veteran and a member of Sewanee Lodge #405 F & AM at Tracy City. He was born in Coalmont, Tennessee on March 17, 1936 to Hubert and Elvie Lockhart Rogers who preceded him in death along with his wife, Nellene Brown Rogers; step-mother, Lillie Rogers; infant daughter, Elvie Jean Rogers; sisters, Hilda Grace Sartain and Willie Flynn, Infant sister, Annell; brothers, Jimmy and Charles Rogers, Wilson, Buck, Meredith and Albert “Pap” Newsome. He is survived by his daughters, Karen (Larry) Davis and Christie (Jamie) Sweeton; son, Larry (Brenda) Rogers; grandchildren, Daniel (Lisa) Crabtree, Jill (Tristan) Witt, DeRon and Brady Meeks, Madison and Griffyn Rogers, Bailee, Karlie and Jaxon Sweeton; great grandchildren, Julianna, Trinidy and Lincoln Witt, Kasadee Crabtree, Brittany Meeks, Lorren and Jayven Land; sisters-in-law, Eileen and Mary Rogers, Wanda Newsome; many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday in the funeral home chapel with Ministers John Potts and Russell Irvin officiating. Burial followed in the Coalmont cemetery with military honors provided by the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard. A Masonic service was held Sunday at 6:00 PM in the funeral home chapel.
Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

MILNER, NAOMI BRANDON, of Sewanee, Tennessee passed away Friday, October 24, 2014, in Sewanee. She was a native of Pleasant Grove in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Carl Jack Brandon and Mattie Coleman Frost Brandon. She and her late husband, Joseph H. Milner, Sr. had operated Milner’s Food Market for many years, he passed away on July 24 of this year. She was also preceded in death by her grandsons, Timothy and Matthew Milner. Naomi was a member of Morton Memorial United Methodist Church. She is survived by her children, Joe Milner, Jr. (Rita), Anne (Jerry) Sitz, Steven (Debra) Milner, Joshua Boone (Beverly) Milner, John Clea (Teresa) Milner; brother, Boone Brandon; sisters, Jane Bartlett and Joy Brown; grandchildren, Edward, Angela, April, Casey, Clea, Anna, Josh, Sarah, Rachel, Joe, III, and Boone; 16 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Family and friends gathered at the Eastern Star cemetery in Sewanee on Sunday afternoon for a graveside service. The Reverend Amanda Diamond and Dean Lutes officiated. Cremations services were provided by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, Tennessee.

HAMBY, BILLY WAYNE “BLUE”, age 82, of Monteagle, passed away Saturday morning in Sewanee. He was born in Pelham, Tennessee a son of the late Robert Hamby and Ezella Thomas Hamby and was preceded in death by brothers, Bill and Paul Sanders, Kenneth and JR Hamby; sisters, Mildred McNear and Irene Moore; grandson, Jeremy Hamby. “Blue” was retired from Monteagle Sunday School Assembly Grounds as the Superintendent of Grounds. He was very active in the community, serving on the city council as alderman for several years and also was a volunteer firefighter. He was a U. S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Hamby; son, Bobby Wayne (Debbie) Hamby, Monteagle; daughter, Peggy (Ernest) Burnett, Estill Springs; grandchildren, Jason, Amber, Dava and Alicia; 9 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Reverend J. T. Steele officiating. Burial was in Monteagle cemetery with full military honors proudly provided by Sequatchie Valley Veterans Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, Tennessee.

LAWSON, CARRIE FRANCES, of Tracy City, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, October, 21, 2014 at her daughter’s home in Sequatchie. She was the daughter of the late Roy Layne and Alice Russell Layne and was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Jackson Lawson; brothers, Ford Layne and Isaac Layne; granddaughter, Shannon Leeann Womac; grandson, Michael Allen Ross. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Sue Hobbs and Rita Kay Sweeton; sisters, Polly Stockwell Conry and Kathleen Meeks; 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Ben Curtis officiating. Burial was in Plainview Cemetery. Pallbearers were Rod Young, Russell Young, Danny Sweeton, Andy Blevins, Danny Ray Meeks, Troy Cannon, Mark Britton and Danny Johnson. Arrangements were made by Foster & Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.

NUNLEY, JOHN LADUE, passed away from this life on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, in Vanderbilt Medical Center. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 2, 1959, a son of William LaDue Nunley and Lottie Pavlak Nunley.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Lottie; sister, Beverly Gann and was a member of the Church of Christ – Central. Survivors include his wife, Donna Faye Nunley; daughters, Natasha (Bob) Zignego of Germantown, Wisconsin and Christy (Curtis) Seagroves of Tracy City; father, LaDue Nunley of Tracy City; brother, Robert Nunley of Mobile, Alabama; sisters, Stella Knight of Cleveland, Ohio, Helene Poling, Mobile, and Brenda Hoffman of Altamont; 4 grandchildren, Hannah Seagroves, Heidi Zignego, Noah Zignego and Lillian Zignego.
Funeral services were held in the funeral home chapel with Brother Alan Mayes officiating. Burial was in Hobbs Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Foster & Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.

SANDERS, RUBY MARIE, age 91, of Altamont, passed away Thursday at Manchester Health Care. She was born in Hubbard’s Cove to John Robert Rollings and Mary Jane Jones Rollings who preceded her in death along with her brothers, James, Ralphie, Walter and John Rollings; sisters, Nellie Myers, Grace Sanders and Elsie Clay; husband William Sanders; son, J. D. Sanders; son-in-law, Paul Burnett. She was a member of Little Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughters. Dean (Wallace) Smith, Acworth, GA, Minnie Burnett, Katherine (Ronnie) Fults, Violet (Carlos) Norris of Altamont; daughter-in-law, Betty Sanders; 12 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Dal Barrett officiating. Burial followed in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, TN.

BRADEN, JEREMY LOIUS, age 28, of Gruetli-Laager, passed away Sunday October 19, 2014 from injuries he received in an automobile accident. He was born in Chattanooga on March 23, 1986. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Johnny and Mary Burnett; grandmother, Peggy Braden. He is survived by his parents, Buster and Diane Braden; brother, Johnny Lee (Chelsea Leigh) Braden; grandfather, Louis Braden; nephews, Baylee Ray and Branson Kase Braden; a host of loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held Monday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Tyler McCullough officiating. Burial followed in the Fall Creek Cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

WHITE, GLENDA SUE, age 33, of Palmer, passed away Sunday, October 19, 2014 from injuries she received in an automobile accident. She was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on October 03, 1981. She was preceded in death by the father of her son, Allon Caldwell; companion, Jeremy Braden. She is survived by her son, Trenton Caldwell; mother, Sue (Bill) Lake; father, Glen (Donna) White; sister, Linda White; half-sisters, April and Gracie White; step-sister, Leigh Ann Futrell; half-brother, Johnny White; step-brother, Brian Lake; grandmother, Betty Joe Layne; step-grandparents, James and Doris Lake. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Eddie Birdwell officiating. Burial followed in the Burkett’s Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

KEENER, RICKY LEWIS, age 59, of Gruetli-Laager, passed away at his home, Sunday October 19, 2014. He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on May 16, 1955. He was preceded in death by his father, L. H. Keener. He is survived by his wife, Janice Rose Keener; mother, Joann Keener; son, Caleb Keener; daughters, Kathy Keener and Jennifer (George) Bryant; step-son, Justin Prater; 8 grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held Thursday October 23, 2014 at the House of the Lord Church from 4:00 PM – 8:00 pm with Bro. Ronnie Partin officiating. His wish was to be cremated. Arrangements made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

LAYNE, WILLIE MAE, BORNE, age 87, of Gruetli-Laager, passed away Saturday October 18, 2014 at her home with her family near. She was a member of Wesley Chapel Holiness Church. She was born in Grundy County on April 29, 1927 Jesse Arthur and Ada Bell Nunley Borne who preceded her in death along with her husband, Carl David Layne; infant sister, Velma Letha Borne; sisters, Rosa Gibbs, June Gibbs and Ruby Caldwell; brothers, Howard and Louie Borne. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Kenneth) Layne; brother, Lonnie (Abbie) Borne; granddaughters, Karen (Cecil) McFarland and Connie (Jeff) Meeks; great grandson, J. C. McFarland II. ; great granddaughters, Kasey McFarland and Kendra (Justin) Hanner; great great grandchildren, Kaleb Meeks and Alexa Hanner; several loving nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Delbert Layne officiating. Burial followed in the Fall Creek Cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

MCCORMICK, CLIFFORD L., age 92, a Coalmont, TN resident and a White County, TN native died October 17, 2014 in Cumberland House Hospice in Crossville, TN following a brief illness. He was a retired employee of the U. S. Corps of Engineers, member of Morrison Church of Christ and son of the late Bransford and Mary Elizabeth Holder McCormick. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wives, Evelyn Kilgore McCormick and Mary Alice Causey McCormick; son, Nelson McCormick; two sisters, Johnnie Elliott and Adalene Cole and three brothers, James, Leon and Clyde McCormick. Mr. McCormick is survived by two sons, James McCormick of Brentwood, TN and Michael (Ginger) McCormick of Crossville, TN; two daughters, Elizabeth Reed of Spring City, TN and Debbie Rice of Dover, TN; twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Hall of Whitwell, TN and Doris Winton of Coalmont, TN; one brother, Henry McCormick of Summitville, TN. Funeral services were held Monday, October 20, in High’s Chapel with Ray Winton officiating. Internment followed in the Jericho cemetery in White County. Arrangements were made by High Funeral Home, McMinnville, TN.

TATE, SHELIA KAY, SHORT, age 60, of Estill Springs, Tennessee passed from this life on October 11, 2014. She was born September 27, 1954 in Sewanee to Billy Ray Short and Beulah Mae (Sells) Short. Mrs. Tate was preceded in death by her father and her husband, Murrell Allen Tate. Surviving are daughter, Shannon (Robbie) Meeks of Monteagle, TN; son, Chris Hill of Decherd, TN; mother, Beulah Short of Winchester, TN; brothers, Harold (Debbie) Short of Huntland, TN, William (Beverly) Short of Belvidere, TN, and Johnny (Beckie) Short of Winchester, TN; sisters, Trisha Marlowe of Winchester, TN, and Angie (Donald Fergerson of Estill Springs, TN; granddaughters, Haleigh Ferrell, Alexis Hill and Breanna Meeks; and canine friend, Chewy. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, October 15, 2014 in the Moore-Cortner Chapel with Rev. Jonathan Jones officiating. Burial followed in Franklin Memorial Gardens, Winchester, TN. Arrangements made by Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, Winchester, TN.
