MEEKS, MARTHA ELLEN SHORTRIDGE, age 88 of Manchester, TN, passed away on June 24, 2014 at the Medical Center of Manchester.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 28 from the Chapel of Central Funeral Home in Manchester with Pastor Greg Nash of Temple Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Bethel cemetery in Pelham, TN. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the Temple Baptist Church, Building Fund, Phase II, 66 Fairlane Dr., Manchester, TN 37355. Arrangements were made by Central Funeral Home, Manchester, TN.

PERRY, PATSY ANN, 69, of the Griffith’s Creek Community, passed away Sunday June 29, 2014 at the Bridge Nursing Home in South Pittsburg. She enjoyed being part of the Exceptional Enterprises family in Coalmont. She was born in Palmer, Tennessee on January 12, 1945 to William and Eva McDonald Perry who preceded her in death along with her brother, Elmer “Bo” Perry; sisters, Esther Mae Fults, Peggy Perry and Mattie Sue Burroughs. She is survived by her sisters, Betty Jo Layne and Nancy Saucedo of Whitwell, Mary Beth (Jimmy) Perry, Kenosha, Wisconsin; brother, Billy (Linda) Perry, Crown Point, Indiana; a host of loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 2 in the funeral home chapel with Minister Eddie Birdwell officiating. Burial was in Palmer Cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

RUST, VIRGINIA R., age 91, of Maryville, TN, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation-Fairpark. She was a graduate of Oregon State University and University of Oregon and a 30-year volunteer docent at the Scaife Gallery of the Carnegie Art Museum, Pittsburgh, PA. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lt. Howard Wood, USAF (DSC) and RDM2 Ambrose G. “Rusty” Rust, USN; parents, Claude G. and Corinne E. Van Slyck Alexander; brother and sister-in-law, Robert V. and Addie Alexander; brother, C. Gordon Alexander; niece, Rose Alexander; grandson, Matthew Rust. Survivors include her daughter, Claudia Rust; daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and John Bleazey all of Maryville, Monica and Rev. Douglas Ogden of Whitehall, MI; son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Melinda Rust of Maryville; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Alexander of Menlo Park, CA; 6 grandchildren and their spouses; 7 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will meet at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, July 6, 2014, at New Providence cemetery for a graveside service with Rev. Steve Mosher officiating. A reception will follow at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 314 W. Broadway Ave., Maryville, TN 37801. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 314 W. Broadway Ave., Maryville, TN 37801. Arrangements were made by McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, Maryville, TN.

WALKER, SARA ANN, age 89, of McMinnville, TN, died Friday, June 27, 2014, at N. H. C. Health Care in McMinnville, TN. She was born July 16, 1924, in Grundy County, TN, was a homemaker, and a member of Grace Chapel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by parents Herman and Carlena Rubley Hobbs, husband Leonard Parker Walker, a sister Wilsie Tate, and brother James Hobbs.
Survivors include son Michael (Pat) Walker; daughter Donna Walker; grandchildren Jason Walker and Melanie Wright; great grandchild Nathan Wright; sisters Joyce (Joe) Knowles and Dorothy Irvin; several nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 29 at McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Clayton Jones officiated. Interment was in Hunerwadle cemetery in Beersheba Springs, TN. Arrangements were made by McMinnville Funeral Home, McMinnville, TN.

HAWKINS, JAMES MARSHALL, SR., age 75, of Sewanee, TN, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Emerald Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee. He was a son of the late Jack Horace Hawkins, Sr. and Katherine Hawkins and was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Pauline, Jack, Jr., John, Robert, Martha Ann, Marguerite, Joe and Janice. He was well known in the area for many things. He loved guns and shooting, had been a Franklin County Constable for several years and had operated an auto repair shop in Sewanee. One of his favorite self appointed duties was to work the school zone and provide a safe crossing to all of the school children in Sewanee. He is survived by his wife, Hazel M. Hawkins; children, Marty (Jane) Hawkins, Sewanee; Wendy (Roger) Seagroves, Tracy City; Kenny (Chris) Hawkins, Tulsa, OK; sisters, Vickie Sholey and Sue Hawkins of Sewanee; brother, Ed Hawkins, Manassas, VA; grandchildren, Jamey, Jennifer, Mycheall, David, Craig, Derek, Tarah, Lakyn and Dalton; great grandchildren, Jack, Daniel, Rylan and Max. A Celebration of Life Service was held Sunday, June 22 at the University Shooting Range in Sewanee, Friends and family spoke and honored the life of James Marshall Hawkins. Memorial may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements were made by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, TN

ROSS, JOHN JACOB, “HUNKY, ” age 83, of Chattanooga, TN, passed away Monday, June 30, 2014 in a Chattanooga hospital. He was a native of Coalmont, TN, a son of the late Albert P. Ross and Nancy Dykes Ross. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat Ross; granddaughter, Alicia Holmes; brother, Albert Larry Ross; sisters, Christine Richards, Rose Mary Durham, Carol Johnson, and Janice Oliver. He was a U. S. Navy veteran and had worked at TVA. He was a member of Brooks United Methodist Church. Survivors include his daughter, Tina Marie Holmes, Chattanooga; step daughter, Debby (Mike) Burgin, Bledsoe County; grandsons, Taylor (Lindsay) Holmes, Shane (Kellie) Burgin; granddaughter, Toshia (Kevin) Tawzer; 5 great grandchildren, Hadley, Peyton, Pyper, Madelyn and Drew; brother, Jerry L. (Judy) Rose, Clyde, NY; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. CDT Thursday, July 3 in the funeral home chapel with Ministers Ray Winton, Clayton Jones and Terry Huffer officiating. Burial will be in Coalmont cemetery with full military honors provided by Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 2 from 4-8pm CDT at the funeral home. Arrangements were made by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, TN.

TURNER, EDNA JEAN, 87, passed away at her home with her family at her side. She was born in Altamont, Tennessee on October 7, 1927 to J. B. and Dora Ann Nunley Killian who preceded her in death along with her son, Robert Earl Turner; husband Robert Eston Turner. She was a member of the Gruetli Church of God. She is survived by her sons, Danny, Larry and Ricky Turner; sister, Wanda Sue (Quentin) Partin, Pelham, TN; brothers, Carl David Killian, Altamont, TN and Stanley Earl Killian of Edna Green, IN; grandchildren, Krysti Erin Stuhlman and Lora Lynn Whitman; 6 great grandchildren; several loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 21 in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Mike Partin officiating. Burial was in Altamont Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, TN.

YATES, THOMAS (TOM/TOMMY) ALLEN, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 at his residence in Sewanee. He was born June 27, 1945 in Sewanee and was preceded in death by his parents, McCord and Lucia Yates. He is survived by Jane Yates of 27 years; brother, Charles (Rod) and Saundra Yates of Manchester and nieces Leslie (Kevin) Sherrill of Manchester and Terri (Tom) Hutchison of Lewisburg; his special sidekick, Jolene McBee and his dearest friend and companion to the end, his dog Carmella. In addition he is survived by Ben Gipson of Cranbrook, Canada; William F. McBee, Jr. and Johnny Johnson of Sewanee, his close longtime friends. In the early years, Tom was active in scouting, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and played in the Mountain Valley Baseball League. He was an avid golfer until his declining health. He attended four years at the Sewanee Military Academy, graduating in 1963. He attended one year at the University of the south and then transferred to Tennessee Tech for four years with a BS Degree in history. He went into the Army from Nov. 1969 to Nov. 1974 and served in Vietnam from Nov. 1971 to April 1972 as first lieutenant as a logistics officer at Cam Ranh Bay. He returned to school at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL for teaching credits. He taught at Grundy County High School for eight years. He ended his working career in Sewanee at the United States Post Office in December 2005 as a mail route carrier for a period of 20 years. He was an Episcopalian by faith. Visitation with the family will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at Jane Yates’ home, 655 Bob Stewman Road, Sewanee (598-5345) . Light refreshments will be served. A later date is still pending on interment of ashes at the Eastern Star cemetery in Sewanee. The service will be private. "Let’s never forget our Vietnam Vets, ones living and ones that have passed. CHAMBERS, ALMA FULTS, 95, of Beaufort, South Carolina, died Friday, June 13, 2014. She passed peacefully in her sleep, at home, attended by family, hospice workers and Griswold Home Care. Born September 28, 1918, in Tracy City, Tennessee, Alma was the third of six daughters born to Jefferson Davis Fults and his wife Annie. She attended the University of Tennessee as a scholar athlete, playing on the Lady Vol’s basketball team. She graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Development and Home Economics. She moved to Nashville, where she worked and met her future husband, William W. Chambers, a graduate student at Vanderbilt University. They married, and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where her husband became a professor of neuro-anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania. Alma became a pre-school teacher at The School in Rose Valley, a position that she held and relished for twenty-seven years. In retirement, the Chambers chose to move to Beaufort, South Carolina. The southern coastal area gave them a chance to practice their favorite pastimes of gardening and fishing on a daily basis.
Alma and Bill were married for fifty-eight years. She became his primary caretaker in his later years as he had Parkinson’s disease. She was a devoted wife and mother, and is survived by two sisters, Eleanor Ballou, of Honolulu, Hawaii and Dale Waltz of Lima, Ohio; a half-sister, Joanne Odell of Knoxville, Tennessee; two children, Anne L. Chambers, William W. Chambers; granddaughter, Dawn G. Gresham, and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. On Saturday, June 14, 2014 her family arranged a Celebration of Life ceremony at her home. Attended by friends, neighbors, caretakers and family members, participants shared stories and memories of Alma that spanned her time in Tennessee, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. They described their friendships and reflected on their experiences with fishing, gardening, caretaking and playing bridge, one of her favorite pastimes. All agreed that Alma had lived a full life and was well loved in her adopted Low Country home.
Contributions in her name can be made to The Friends of Caroline Hospice, 1110 13th Street, Port Royal, SC 29935.
Arrangements were made by Anderson Funeral Home, Beaufort, SC.

CAMPBELL, MALCOLM KENNETH “DICKIE, ” age 74, of Sewanee, TN, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014 at his home. He was a son of the late Melvin Campbell and Hazel Kilgore Campbell and was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Yokley “Babe” Campbell. He was retired from the University of The South and had worked as a police officer and supervisor in grounds and maintenance. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and was truly a man who dearly loved his family, friends and his country. He was a U. S. Army veteran. Survivors include his daughters, Donna Campbell Nunley and her husband, Kenny of Kingston Springs, TN and Tammy Campbell Green and her husband, Danny of Pegram, TN; sisters, Renaye Smith, Nashville, Dean Burrows, Tracy City, Ophelia Hicks, Chattanooga, Joan Johnson, Murfreesboro and Delores Layne, Monteagle; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 25 in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Ron Goodman officiating.
Burial was in Eastern Star cemetery with full military honors provided by the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, TN.

MOOREHEAD, STEPHANIE, of Tracy City, TN, passed away June 10, 2014. She was born June 28, 1976 and is survived by her children Andrew and Brooke Collins of Oneida, TN and many wonderful family and friends including her pets. She was a very strong supporter of our troops, a nature fan of trails and waterfalls. She was a true supporter and fan of the Tennessee Volunteers. Forever a Vol! Go Big Orange. A memorial service will be held June 28, 2014 at 5:00 P.M. at the Best Western Smoke House Chapel in Monteagle, TN. Arrangements were made by Cumberland Funeral Home
