Bess, Mrs. Elizabeth Louise, 78,
(9/27/1935 - 6/23/2014)
passed away at her home Monday June 23, 2014. She was a member of the Altamont Baptist Church. She was born in Dade County, Georgia on September, 27, 1935 to Joe and Arizona Middlebrooks Phillips who preceded her in death along with her daughter, Deborah Meeks; husband, Edgar Bess; sister, Betty McNeese; brothers, Walter, O. B., Junior and Cecil Phillips; great grandson, Jimmylee Barrett. She is survived by her daughters, Rita (Jackey) Hoosier, Palmer, TN and Wanda (Bill) Hoosier, Kissimmee, FL; brothers, Steve (Linda) Phillips, Chickamauga, GA and Clarence "Bunk" (Sandra) Phillips, Lookout Mountain, GA; sister-in-law, Caroline Phillips, Lookout Mountain, GA; grandchildren, Chasity (Jaron) Barrett, Nathan (Stephanie) Cunningham, Michael Hoosier, Brittney (Cody) Childers, Miguel (Sarah) Cruz; 9 great grandchildren; several loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Ab Scott and Bro. Don Hill officiating with burial to follow in the Altamont Cemetery. Visitation: 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM Tuesday at Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, Tennessee.

Campbell, Mr. Malcolm Kenneth “Dickie”
(September 10, 1939 - June 21, 2014)
age 74 of Sewanee passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014, at his home. He was a son of the late Melvin Campbell and Hazel Kilgore Campbell and was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Yokley “Babe” Campbell.
Dickie was retired from the University of The South; he had worked as a police officer and supervisor in grounds and maintenance. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and was truly and man who dearly loved his family, friends and his country. He was a U. S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his daughters, Donna Campbell Nunley and her husband, Kenny of Kingston Springs, TN and Tammy Campbell Green and her husband, Danny of Pegram, TN; sisters, Renaye Smith, Nashville, Dean Burrows, Tracy City, Ophelia Hicks, Chattanooga, Joan Johnson, Murfreesboro and Delores Layne, Monteagle; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Ron Goodman officiating. Burial will be in Eastern Star cemetery with full military honors provided by the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard. Visitation with family and friends will be Tuesday from 5 to 9 P.M. at the funeral home. Cumberland Funeral Home of Monteagle is in charge of arrangements.

Hawkins, James Marshall, Sr. (March 21, 1939 - June 19, 2014) age 75 of Sewanee, Tennessee passed away Thursday evening, June 19, 2014, at Emerald-Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee. He was a son of the late Jack Horace Hawkins, Sr. and Katherine Hawkins and was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Pauline, Jack, Jr., John, Robert, Martha Ann, Marguerite, Joe and Janice. Marshall was well known in the area for many things, he loved guns and shooting, he had been a Franklin County Constable for several years and had operated an auto repair shop in Sewanee. One of his favorite self appointed duties was to work the school zone and provide a safe crossing to all of the school children in Sewanee. He is survived by his wife, Hazel M. Hawkins; children, Marty (Jane) Hawkins, Sewanee, Wendy (Roger) Seagroves, Tracy City, Kenny (Chris) Hawkins, Tulsa, OK; sisters, Vickie Sholey and Sue Hawkins of Sewanee; brother, Ed Hawkins, Manassas, VA; grandchildren, Jamey, Jennifer, Mycheall, David, Craig, Derek, Tarah, Lakyn and Dalton; great-grandchildren, Jack, Daniel, Rylan and Max.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 4:00 P.M. Sunday at the University Shooting Range, 1390 Jumpoff Road, Sewanee, TN. Friends and family will speak and honor the life of James Marshall Hawkins. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

WISE, PEGGY DIANE, 61, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday, June 10, 2014. She was born in Whitwell on July 29, 1952 to Charles Andrew and Jennie Olene Haynes Shrum who preceded her in death along with her brother, Billy Shrum. She was a member of the Laager Congregational Methodist Church and retired teacher from the Grundy County School System. She is survived by her husband, Charles Wise; sons, Don and Cody (Melinda) Wise; brothers, Bobby (Sharon) and Jerry (Carolyn) Shrum; sisters, Nadine (Houston) Nolan, Sue (Isaac) Parson, Marie Miller and Hilda (Arnold) Dickson; 5 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, June 13 in the funeral home chapel with Ministers Larry Campbell, Jessie Lockhart and Larry Crabtree officiating. Burial was in Fall Creek Cemetery. Arrangements were madeby Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

LOCKHART, JASON WALLICE, 34, of the Griffith Creek Community, died Thursday, June 12, 2014. He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on December 16, 1979. He is survived by his father, Jerry Lockhart, Whitwell; mother, Dianne Cherry, Sargent, Texas; wife, Sarah Lockhart; daughter, Elizabeth Riley Hicks; step-daughter, Natalie Nunley; sister, Dana Michelle (Johnnie) Reznicek, Wallis, Texas; brother, Michael Allen (Amber) Lockhart, Wallis, Texas; loving nieces and nephews and a host of cousins, aunts and uncles. Graveside funeral services were held Monday, June 16 at the Palmer cemetery with Minister Jason Bryant officiating. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

NUNLEY, ROBERT, VERNON, age 79, of Tracy City, TN, passed away at his home Saturday, June 14, 2014. He is preceded in death by his wife Betty Lou (Nell) Nunley; parents Vernon and Anna Mae Nunley; brother Charles Nunley. He is survived by his wife Faye Cannon Nunley; sons Stephen Nunley (Angela) and Richard Nunley; step daughters Shirley (Sandy) Morris and Betty Cannon; sister Drucilla (Larry) Myers; grandson, Eric Copeland. Funeral services were held Monday, June 16 in the chapel of Foster and Lay Funeral Home with Reverend Barry Nolan and Claude Hoback officiating. Burial was in Plainview Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Foster and Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.

ZDANOWSKI, FRANCES VIRGINIA, age 68, of Tracy City, TN, passed away at her home Tuesday, June 10, 2014 after an extended illness. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Coalmont, TN, and also worked as a volunteer at the Appalachian Women’s Guild for many years. She is preceded in death by her parents James Carl and Hallie Marie Rector Hogwood; son-in-law Richard Huckabee; brother James (Zeb) Coffelt; sister, Alice Vinson. Survivors include her loving husband, Michael Stephen Zdanowski; son Charles Edward Condra; daughters and son-in-laws Susan (Clifford) Skiles, Tena Huckabee, Mary (Joseph) Starr, Jamie (Jason) Sidsworth and Alicia Zdanowski; brothers, Sam (Lucille) Coffelt, Carl Jr. (Nora) Hogwood; sisters Lois (Bill) McCallie, Carolyn (Mark) Jackson; grandchildren, April (Chris) Rector, Keena (Chad) Johnson, Tarena (Kenneth) Moore, Jeremy (Mandy) Long, Sarah Wynne, Hallie Sidsworth, Olivia Sidsworth; great grandchildren, Amber Skiles, Rebecca Muir, Britany Johnson, Crissy Moore, Logan Moore, and Eli Wynne; great-great grandchildren Cameron, Aubry and Braylon Skiles. Graveside services were held Thursday, June 12 at Coalmont cemetery with Brother Ray Winton officiating. Arrangements were made by Foster and Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.

ANDERSON, DOUGLAS ELISHA, age 55, of Tracy City, TN, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014 in Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He was a son of the late Elisha and Dorothy Anderson and had worked at Nunley Poultry. Survivors include his sons, Donny, Derrick, and Robert Anderson; daughters, Brandy, Alicia, Kelia, Nicky, Manda, Kisha and Desiree; brothers, Rob, Tony, Gene, Herbert, David, C. L. and Floyd Anderson; sisters, Betty Parson, Gussie Anderson, and Mae Anderson; 12 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 18 in the funeral home chapel. Burial was in Coalmont Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Foster and Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN

DYKES, STANLEY FRANKLIN, “BOWZER, ” age 82, of Parmley Hollow near Tracy City, TN, passed away at his home Tuesday, May 27, 2014. He was a U. S. Army veteran and had served during the Korean War. Born in Tracy City, he was a son of the late Clinton and Nancy O’Neal Dykes and was preceded in death by his brothers, Carmon, Gordon, Grady and John Dykes. “Bowzer” was a member of Plainview Community Church and had worked for Hoback Construction for over 25 years and was a well-known and skilled concrete former and finisher. Survivors include his niece whom he called his daughter, Rhonda Dykes; brother, Carl Dykes; sisters, Marie McDaniel and Eula Mae Dykes; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 29 in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Mike Rigsby and Claude Hoback officiating. Burial was in Orange Hill cemetery with full military honors provided by Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Foster and Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.

FERRELL, STEVEN JOE, 57, died Sunday, May 25, 2014. He was born in McMinnville, Tennessee and served in the US Marines. He was employed by Americare Services and was preceded in death by his parents, William Ferrell and Betty Joann Veal Hayes; son, Jake King; and a sister, Treva Ferrell. He is survived by his wife, Amy Hobbs Ferrell; daughter, Kylee Ferrell; sister, Sherry Williamson; brothers, Clyde and Tommy Ferrell, Johnny Hayes; several nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services were held Friday, May 30, at the Little Johnny Myers cemetery on Gap Road in Altamont with Minister Coy King officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to help with funeral expenses. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, TN.

GILLIAM, JIMMY, age 67, of Pelham, Tennessee passed from this life on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at his home. He was born March 21, 1947 in Franklin County, the son of the late Robert and Clarcie Mae Meeks Gilliam. He was a member of Roarks Cove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by wife, Mary Ann and sisters, Lucille, Nurvie and Della; sons, Jimmy Gilliam, Jr. of Hillsboro, TN and Timmy Gilliam of Pelham, TN; daughter, Sue Ann (Max) Owens of Arkansas; grandchildren, Jessica and Jeremy; great granddaughter, Krystal; brothers, Harold, Ronnie, Robert, David, and Bill; sisters, Unis, Dede Mae and Stella; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the Roarks Cove Baptist Church with Rev. David McGee officiating. Interment was in Hill Cemetery, Alto, TN. GRIMM, MARY ELIZABETH, age 50, of Winchester, Tennessee, passed from this life on Friday, May 30, 2014, at Saint Thomas Hospital, Murfreesboro. She was born January 9, 1964 in Chattanooga, the daughter of the late Frank Edward and Mary Ann (McElderry) Frye. She was the owner/operator of Amazon Detail in Winchester. She is preceded in death by her father, Frank Frye and his wife Katherine. Surviving are husband of 25 years, Richard Grimm; sons, Mike Grimm of Winchester, TN and Richard Grimm of Virginia; daughter, Samantha Grimm of Murfreesboro, TN; brother, Michael Frye of San Diego, CA; mother, Mary Ann Lawhorn and her husband Willie; and aunt, Cathy Shelton of Hot Springs, AR. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 3 in the Moore-Cortner Chapel with Rev. Alan Roggli officiating. Arrangements were made by Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, Winchester, TN.
