Linda Faye Curtis age 47 of Tracy City, Tennessee passed away Wednesday morning, May 7, 2014, at her home. She was preceded in death by her father, James Walter Porter, Jr. ; brother, Billy Joe Porter.
She is survived by her sons, Jeremiah Paul Curtis and Joshua Lee Curtis; mother and step-father, Fredia and Cecil Nelson of Tracy City; brothers, James Edward Porter, Tony Lee Porter, David Wayne Porter, Steven Anthony Nelson; sisters, Cathy Nadine Roden and Tammy Renee Morris; grandson, Isaiah Curtis. A private memorial service has been held by the family. Arrangements are by Foster & Lay Funeral Home of Tracy City
Sally Ann Tucker
(December 15, 1925 - May 1, 2014)
Mrs. Sally Ann Tucker age 88 of Sewanee, Tennessee went to be with the Lord Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Winchester, Tennessee. Mrs. Tucker was a food hostess for many years and was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Sewanee.
She was preceded in death by her parents George and Etta Mae Bohanan Gipson; her husband Edward E. Tucker; son Edward Lee Tucker; sisters Charlotte Johnson, Amy Nunley, Polly Kokoski and Mary Watts; brothers Walker, Jackie, Herman, Vernon, George, and John Gipson.
Survivors include her daughter Annie Kalihar of Oregon; sister Geraldine (Wayne) Walker of Decherd, TN; brother Tommy Gipson of Cowan, TN; many nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service to honor the life of Mrs. Sally Tucker will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Eastern Star cemetery in Sewanee with Reverend Harry Green officiating.
Edith Layne Shirley
(October 30, 1911 - April 25, 2014)
Mrs. Edith Layne Shirley age 102 of Layne’s Cove near Pelham, TN passed from this life on Friday evening, April 25, 2014, at Willows of Winchester Health & Rehab Center.
She was born October 30, 1911 a daughter of the late W. T. and Hattie Partin Hill. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Abe Layne and her husband, Bob Shirley; brothers, Joe and Osler Hill; sister, Lucille Brown; grandson, Gary Layne.
Mrs. Edith had worked for many years at Wonder Cave where she was a guide for the many thousands of visitors who stopped at the cave every year.
She is survived by a son, Sherman Layne of Layne’s Cove; daughters, Virginia Zimsek, Streetsboro, Ohio and Teresa Ann Layne, Maryland; grandchildren, Sharon Hunt, Teresa Pilcher and Daniel Zimsek; great-grandchildren, Lacey Hunt, Alex Hunt and Amber Layne; sisters, Fermenda Hassebrock of Layne’s Cove, Mary Lee Johnson, Tracy City and Margaret Jordan, Beaumont, Texas; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, Tennessee.
Thomas Allen Yates
(June 27, 1945 - April 19, 2014)
Mr. Thomas Allen Yates age 68 of Sewanee, Tennessee passed away unexpectedly Saturday, April 19, 2014 at his home. Tom was a United States Army Veteran and also worked for the United States Postal Service for many years as a mail carrier. Memorial Services will be announced at a later date.
LAYNE, DEREDA JOYCE, 84, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014. She was a member of Faith Missionary Church of God and a life long servant of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born in Palmer, Tennessee on May 22, 1929 to Arthur and Mary Jane Knox Tate who preceded her in death along with her sister, Marie Fisher and Iris and Ruth Tate; brothers, Charles and William Ford Tate; husband, James Layne.
She is survived by her son, Don (Deb) Layne, Elgin, IL and Bruce (Dorothy) Layne, McMinnville; daughters, Pam (Donnie) Harvey, Dunlap and Deborah King, Altamont; the granddaughter she raised, Jennifer Michelle Curtis; brother, Joe David Tate, Palmer; sister, Helen Kirk, Arizona; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 28 in the funeral home chapel with Ministers Stacey Smith and Charles Tipton officiating. Burial was in Palmer Cemetery. Arrangements were madeby Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.
MELTON, BRYAN U., 93, passed away April 21, 2014. He was a native of Cleveland, TN where he graduated from Bradley Co. High School. He later moved to Chattanooga and attended UTC. He was a disabled American Veteran having fought in several European campaigns in WW II. After returning home from the war, Bryan began his own business in Chattanooga, TN. Under the name ‘Melton Appliances’ he sold residential heating and air conditioning systems.
He was active in local conservative politics and church groups. He, along with his wife Roddy Melton, attended First Presbyterian Church of Ft. Oglethorpe, GA.
He was preceded in death by parents, Dyke H. and Hattie M. Melton and an only brother, George of Kokomo, Indiana.
Bryan and Roddy were parents of two sons, Rod (of McKinney, TX) (grandchildren Heather, Reid, and Neil) and Kim (of Akron, PA) (grandchildren: Jenna, Jordan, and Morgan) .
Funeral services will be at 1st Presbyterian Church of Ft. Oglethorpe, GA, on Friday May 2, 2014 at noon. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Henry J. Dyer
(May 13, 1936 - April 4, 2014)
Mr. Henry J. “Buck” Dyer, Jr. age 77 of Winchester and formerly of Monteagle, went to his Heavenly Home Friday morning with his family by his bed side. Buck was born in Monteagle, on the Marion County Side of the railroad tracks, May 13, 1936, a son of the late Henry Dyer and Lillian Johnson Dyer, he was preceded in death by his brothers, J. C., Raymond Dyer and two infant brothers; sister, Martha Johnson. Mr. Dyer was a retired truck driver and coalminer and was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon; he loved to share his testimony with everyone he met. Survivors in clued his wife, Barbara A Dyer; daughters, Deborah Dyer, McMinnville, Linda Dyer, Winchester and Anita (Doyle) Searcy, Tullahoma; sister, Elizabeth Hill, Keith Springs Mountain; grandchildren, Christy, Travis, Kellie, Corey and Tiffany, 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 4:00 P.M. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Ray Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Summerfield cemetery with the Deacons of Oaklawn Baptist Church serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Saturday 5-9 P.M. at the funeral home. Stanley Loransie Whitman (August 23, 1972 - April 4, 2014)
Stanley “Ransie” Whitman, age 41, of Tracy City, Tennessee, passed away Friday, April 4, 2014 in Erlanger Hospital. He is preceded in death by his father, Stanley Whitman; grandparents, Celo and Pearl Campbell, grandfather, Elmo Whitman. Survivors include his wife, Holly L. Whitman, Tracy City, Tennessee; sons, Jonathan L. Whitman, Coalmont, Tennessee; James Garrett Whitman, Tracy City, Tennessee; daughters, Ciara Nicole Whitman, Tracy City, Tennessee; Braxton Loransie Whitman, Tracy City, Tennessee; parents, William and Jonah Sanders, Coalmont, Tennessee; brother, Jonatha Renzo Whitman, Tullahoma, Tennessee; niece, Olivia Kilgore, Tracy City, Tennessee; several Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. Minnie Lee Lockhart (June 2, 1914 - April 2, 2014)
Mrs. Minnie Lee Lockhart age 99 of Monteagle passed away Wednesday with her family by her side. She was born in Coalmont a daughter of the late Joe Nunley and Lydia Woodlee Nunley and was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Lockhart; brother, Elihu Nunley; sister, Josephine Jones; sons, Roy Kenneth and Billy Joe Lockhart; daughter-in-law, Virginia Lockhart. Survivors include her children, Dorothy (James W.) MaGouirk, Edwene Lockhart, Juanita (Jim) Haynes, Ruby (Ernie) Walker, Wanda (Terry) Turner and Marie (Jimmy) Hinson; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 32 great-great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-great-grandchild. Special acknowledgment to Webster Nunley, a lifelong and cherished friend. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Mike Rigsby and Claude Hoback officiating. Burial will be in Bonny Oak Cemetery. James "Ricky" Richard Anderson (February 12, 1980 - April 1, 2014)
James Richard (Ricky) Anderson age 34 of Tracy City, Tennessee passed away April 1, 2014 in a truck accident in Wythe County, Virginia. He was born February 12, 1980. He is preceded in death by his father Raymond Leslie Anderson; his mother, Pamela Meeks Anderson; his sister, Sandy Rose Anderson. Survivors include his brother Ramey Anderson of Tracy City, TN; sister Katie Anderson of Dyersburg, TN; grandmother Eda Anderson Morrison of Tracy City, TN; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, April 6, 2014 in the chapel of Cumberland Funeral Home. Reverend Clayton Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Warren cemetery in Pelham, Tennessee. The family will receive friends 4:00 – 9:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
