LAYNE, FRED A. age 75, of Sidney, Ohio, formerly of Monteagle, TN, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the Fair Haven Shelby County Home. He was born March 14, 1938 in Monteagle, TN, the son of the late Jay and Huetta (Gilliam) Layne. He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. He was a member of the Crossroad Church of God of Piqua.
He is survived by his former wife, Jeanette “Marlene” Layne, and their two daughters, Donna Sartain and husband Billy, and Brenda Shoemaker and husband, Jeffery, both of Piquo; two grandchildren, Frederick “Jamie” Sammons and Jordyne Shoemaker; one great grandson, Hunter Sammons; one brother, Kenneth Layne and wife, Bunia of Pelham, TN; two sisters, Marlene O’Neal and husband, Kenny, and Arlene Layne and husband, Homer, both of Pelham, TN.
Funeral services were held March 11 at Full Gospel Community Church in Sidney, OH with the Reverend Joe Hill and Jeff Hill officiating. Burial was in Shelby Memory Gardens in Sidney, OH.
Arrangements were madeby Cromes Funeral Home, Sidney, OH.

NUNLEY, LLOYD ALLEN, SR., age 66, of the Flat Branch community near Tracy City, TN, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 in Emerald Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee, TN. He was a son of the late Harvey Nunley and Edna Morgan Nunley and was preceded in death by brothers, Stanley and Franklin D. Nunley; sister, Nellie Hill. He had worked at the I-24 Rest Area in Monteagle for several years before retiring. Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Nunley; son, Lloyd Allen Nunley, Jr., Tracy City; daughter, Stephanie Hall, Tracy City, TN; brothers, Albert “Pap” Nunley, Tracy City, Robert Nunley, Craigsville, IN and Don Nunley of Lebanon, TN; sister, Mary Frederick, Tracy City; 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 18 in the funeral home chapel with Minister Mack Hampton officiating. Burial was in Clouse Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were madeby Foster and Lay FuneralHome, Tracy City, TN.

KILGORE, ROY “MOE, ” age 82, of Tracy City, TN, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, at his home with his family by his side. He was a son of the late Roy Kilgore and Creda Meeks Kilgore and was preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur, Leonard, James and Glen R. Kilgore; sisters, Rachael Spurgeon and Rosalee Meeks; grandson, Joseph Michael Kilgore. He was a retired coalminer and had worked for Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Frances M. Kilgore; daughter, Marcie Kilgore, Tracy City; sons, Robert, Richard and Carlton (Debbie) Kilgore, all of Tracy City; brother, Robert Kilgore of Murfreesboro; sisters, Linda Lawson, Manchester and Nancy Elizabeth Sheffy of Radford, VA; grandchildren, Eric (Margie) Kilgore, Sequatchie; Hannah Kilgore, Tracy City; step grandsons, Joshua Meeks and Christopher Meeks; great grandchildren, Jason Jet Li Kilgore and Breana Kilgore and one on the way; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 19 in the funeral home chapel with Minister Ben Curtis officiating. Burial was in Plainview Cemetery. Arrangements were madeby Foster and Lay FuneralHome, Tracy City, TN.

LAYNE, LONNIE, MR., Lonnie Layne age 85 Thursday morning, March 6, 2014, at his home in Tracy City with his family by his bedside. He was a son of the late William Jennings “Jay” Layne and HuEtta Gilliam Layne and was preceded in death by his brother, Harlon Layne and his brother, Fred Layne passed away Thursday afternoon in Ohio; sisters, Ella Mae Blankenship, Gladys Sanders, Velma Jean Layne, Louise Shield and Juanita Layne; grandchildren, Jessica Layne, Derick Layne and Jeremy Hamby.
Lonnie loved his family dearly and was a man of principle; he believed in hard work, and that a man’s word was his bond. He loved nature and always looked forward to gardening. He also enjoyed having horses and loved his dog.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Earline Layne; children, Pat Hamby, Monteagle, David “Rocky” Layne, Pelham, Larry Wade (Gail) Layne, Lewisburg, TN, Ben (Tonya) Layne, Tracy City and Mike Layne, Tracy City; brother, Kenneth Layne, Pelham; sisters, Arlene Layne and Marlene O’Neal of Pelham; grandchildren, Jason, Alisha, Amber, Dava, Michael Paul, Stacy, Chris, Mikie, Jaelyn and Kendal, 16 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Ministers Mike Rigsby and Claude Hoback officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5-9 P.M. Burial will be in Summerfield Cemetery.

MEEKS, JOSEPHINE, age 69, of Monteagle, TN, passed away Friday, January 17, 2014 at her home. She was a daughter of the late Reverend Joe V. Meeks and Cora Elizabeth Layne Meeks and was preceded in death by her husband, James Malcolm Meeks; son, James Rickey Meeks, Sr. ; great granddaughter, Jacey Dixon; brothers, Oscar Franklin, Walter and Gilman Meeks; sisters, Virginia Nunley, Clara Ruth Byers and Hazel Dykes. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Stephen L. (Steve) and Pattie Meeks of Monteagle; sisters, Anna Lou Dixon and Elizabeth Caldwell, both of Tracy City; grandchildren, Stephanie (Eddie) Dixon, Stephen (Brittany), James Ricky (Courtney) ; great grandchildren, Jacob, Alia, Brilee and Ariana; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held January 19 at Pryor Ridge Church with Reverend Bobby Winton officiating. Burial was Pryor Ridge Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Foster and Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.

SHORT, VIRGINIA C., age 68, of Tracy City, TN passed away, Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Emerald Hodgson Skilled Care in Sewanee, Tennessee. Born in Grundy County, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Nunley and Nellie Nunley and was preceded in death by her brother, Larry Dale Nunley, Sr. ; daughter, Shawna Short. She was a member of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband, Robert Short, Tracy City; son, Kip (Penny) Short, Tracy City; daughters, Trina (Evan) Nunley, Coalmont; Misha (Harvey) Hammock, Sharpsburg, Georgia; brothers, Charles Nunley, Gruetli- Laager; Roy Nunley, Robert and Kenneth Nunley, all of Tracy City; sister, Leda Totherow, Coalmont; 10 grandchildren, Kye (Harley), Kayla, Kory, Katie, Maddie, Jenny Beth, Emily, Samantha, Trinity and Pea Pod; 1 great grandchild, McKenna; several nieces and nephews and a very special friend, whom she loved like a granddaughter, MaKayla “Tink” Sweeton. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 2, in the funeral home chapel with Ministers Larry Campbell, Jerry Stockwell and Andy Weaver officiating. Eastern Star Service was held Saturday, March 1. Arrangements were made by Foster and Lay FuneralHome, Tracy City, TN.

HARRIS, INEZ, age 69, of Winchester, TN, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2014 at her home. She was a native of Palmer, a daughter of the late Preston Lee Tate and Mattie Cleo Meeks Tate and was preceded in death by a son, Dannie Harris of Decherd; infant brother, Leon Tate; half brothers, Jack, Steve, and Lewis Turner; step father, Ed Turner; son-in-law, Ruble Price. Survivors include her husband, James W. Harris, Winchester; daughter, Diane Price, Winchester; sister, Margaret Gipson, White House, TN; half-brother, Joe Turner, Palmer; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 12 in the funeral home chapel with Minister Chris Haynes officiating. Burial was in Mt. Garner cemetery in Decherd, TN. KEMMERLY, VIRGINIA MAXINE (MAX), passed away peacefully after a long illness on her 80th birthday, February 18, 2014, and has gone to glory to get a well-deserved rest. Born in 1934 in Irvine, KY, to Dewey and Lottie Whitaker, she proudly practiced nursing for many years, and in 1962 she became a nurse anesthetist and worked at John Gaston and E. F. Crump Hospitals in Memphis. She married Paul C. Kemmerly in 1970, moving to Nashville, TN, and then to Beersheba Springs, TN, in retirement. She was a wonderful supporter of Grundy County libraries, especially the Beersheba Library, and she will be greatly missed. She is survived by her loving children, Jack and Debbie Marnhout, Richard and Jane Marnhout, Rebecca and John Edmondson, Adam and Julie Kemmerly, Todd and Natalie Kemmerly, Ross and Nancy Kemmerly, and Kevin Kemmerly; beloved sister Peggy Brown and family; devoted companions Sheila Jackson and Anne Tolliver; and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 25, from the Chapel of Spring Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Clayton Jones officiating. Interment was in Mt. Olivet cemetery in Nashville. Arrangements were made by Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, Nashville, TN.

HEDGES, MILFORD LELAND, 74, of Monteagle, TN, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. He was an entrepreneur at heart and had successfully owned and operated his own businesses. He traveled often and never met a stranger. He loved his family and will be deeply missed. He was born in Taylorville, Illinois on January 20, 1940, the first born and only son of the late Milford Hedges and the late Reverend Lillian G. Hedges. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, David Hedges. Survivors include his wife, Susan Hedges of Monteagle, TN; daughters, Dru (Mike) Gruetzmacher of Aubrey, TX; and Teresa Garret of Austin, TX; a son, Steven Graw of Chapmansboro, TN; three grandsons, Jon Etheredge and Dan Etheredge, both of Austin, TX; and Matthew Gruetzmacher of Aubrey, TX; one granddaughter, Evin Graw of Chapmansboro, TN; three sisters, Betty Hedges Shrum (Wayne) of Crossville, TN; Sharon Hedges Tomes (Clifford) of Sewanee, TN; and Edwina Hedges Coppinger (Vaughn) of Monteagle, TN; two uncles, Reverend Joe Hedges and Edwin Gibbs; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial services were held Saturday, February 22 in the chapel of Cumberland Funeral Home in Monteagle, TN with Reverend Terry Arnold and Reverend Wayne Shrum officiating. Burial was in Monteagle Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, TN.

CALDWELL, HELEN L., GIVENS, 79, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2014. She was an LPN and had worked at the Cumberland Heights Hospital. She was born in Bryant’s Cove on September 27, 1934 to Fate and Maggie Knowlan who preceded her in death along with her husband, Ralph Givens; sister, Louise Brewer; brothers, Hershell, John, George, Doug and Gilliam Knowlan. She is survived by her daughter, Belinda Darlene (Rick) Griffith; sons, Jeffery Rodney (Stacy) Givens and Darrell Roger (Buncie) Givens, all of Whitwell; sisters, Marie Taylor, McMinnville, Margaret Nance, Gruetli-Laager and Troas Layne of Palmer; brothers, Preston (Willene) Knowlan, Gruetli-Laager and Charles Ray (Yoshiko) Knowlan, Harrison; grandchildren, Jamie, Susie, Ashley, Blake, BreAnn, Richelle, Dirk and Nicholas; great grandson, Noah. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 25 in the funeral home chapel with Minster Delbert Layne officiating. Burial was in Fall Creek Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

WILSON, COLEMAN CLAY, also known as "Papa", 73, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014 at The Bridge at Monteagle. He was a loving father, grandfather and friend to all that knew him. He was retired from The Houston Chronicle were he worked as a Printing Pressman. In his younger years, he was a avid golf player.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Charles Frayer of Hurst, Texas; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Wilson McQuary and Daniel S McQuary of Fort Stockton, Tx; sons, Jared L Wilson, Jay Lynn Wilson and Joel L Wilson of Bedford, Tx; grandchildren, Lauren and Micah Womack, Lindsey L Wilson, Travis K Wilson, Jordan Wilson, Justin Wilson, Aaron Wilson, Jasen Wilson; great grandchildren, Connor Wilson Womack and Addison Grace Womack; nieces, Shelley Frayer Prikey and Dena Frayer.
The family would like to thank the staff and caretakers at The Bridge of Monteagle and the CNA Tim, for the compassionate care they provided for the last 10 years.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to The Avalon Hospice of Tullahoma and the Parkinson's Association.
