Dr. Bobby Lynn Bledsoe

Dr. Bobby Lynn Bledsoe, 71, of Knoxville, formerly of Dyersburg, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002 at his residence. He was a professor in the College of Agriculture at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville from 1969 until 2000. During his tenure there, he taught research and development in the Agricultural Engineering Department. Among his many projects were the development of a solar hay dryer, and coordination of development and competition for small tractor engines. He was a 1948 graduate of Dyersburg High School and attended UT at Martin for two years. He then went to Knoxville and attended the University of Tennessee on the cooperative work/study program, in which he worked every other quarter for International Harvester Company in Memphis and attended the University every other quarter. He graduated in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering. During his time at International Harvester, he helped to develop the twine knotter on the IH hay baler. He received his Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in Stillwater in 1969 and began teaching at UT Knoxville that fall. He was elected "Teacher of the Year" in 1998 for the Agriculture Department at UT. He was a member of St. Mark's Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir.

Estelle Seratt, 93, of Dyersburg, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002 at Dyersburg Manor Nursing Center. She was a retired nursery aide at Parkview Hospital and a member of Beech Grove General Baptist Church.

Robert Lewis Mays, 62, of Dyersburg, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002 at Oakwood Manor in Dyersburg. He was a former school bus driver with Dyer County Schools.

Fred Brown, 76, of Obion, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City. He was a retired employee of Obion Highway Department, a deacon at Hornbeak Baptist Church for 20 years, a World War II Korean Conflict Army/Navy veteran, a member of Trimble American Legion and a 32nd Degree Mason/Western Sun Lodge in Troy.

Roger Dale Deaton, 43, of Friendship, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002 at  Jackson Madison County General Hospital. He was a carpenter and a member of Friendship Masonic Lodge.

James "Ike" Hill, 74, of Ocean Springs, Miss., formerly of Dyersburg, died Monday, January 28, 2002. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran after 20 years of service, retired law enforcement officer for Dyer County, a retired executive director of Tennessee Sheriff's Association, a member of Rehoboth United Methodist church, member of Hess Lodge #93 in Dyersburg, a former member of Dyersburg Rotary Club and active in Cancer Crusade. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rehoboth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Frank Gardner and the Rev. John Lee officiating. Burial will be in Rehoboth Cemetery in Newbern. The family will receive visitors from 6-9 p.m. today at  Johnson Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife, Ramona Hill of Ocean Springs, Miss.; a daughter, Rebecca Hill Adkerson and husband, Jerry "Butch" Adkerson of Gautier, Miss.; a son, James I. Hill Jr.; a brother, Robert Hill and wife Sarah of Memphis; a granddaughter, Jennifer Adkerson Pyron of Biloxi, Miss.; and two sisters-in-law, Rebecca Hill and Merigold Jenkins, both of Dyersburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Cula McKain Hill; a sister, Celia Moore; and a brother, Daren Hill. Pallbearers will be George Robertson, Lynn Jones, Jack Hill, Robert Galloway, Gene Sykes, Erby Mitchell, Gerald Reed, Pee Foust and Johnny Harrison. Honorary pallbearers will be J.C. Park, Stan Smith, Judge William Hammett, Ralph Holland, Bill Ray, Ronnie Craig and J.R. McGuire.

Robbie Sue Bryant, 84, of Dyersburg, died Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at Baptist Hospital in Ripley. She was a retired employee of Dyersburg Fabrics after 52 years and a member of East Dyersburg Methodist Church. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Earl Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Henley of Dyersburg; two sons, Jerry Bryant of RoEllen and Mike Bryant of Dyersburg; a sister, Nan "Dutch" Vacca of Panama City, Fla.; four grandchildren, Keith Barham, Tony Barham, Kenneth Bryant and Dennis Bryant; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Bryant; a son, Donnie Bryant; and a sister, Mary Peckenpaugh. Pallbearers will be Keith Barham, Kyle Barham, Tony Barham, Dennis Bryant, Kenneth Bryant and Red Tarkington.

Owen Thomas "Cotton" Williamson Jr., 76, of Dyersburg, died Monday, January 28, 2002 at Methodist Healthcare-Dyersburg Hospital. He was a retired distributor of Tom's Peanuts, a member of Moose Club and a Methodist. Services were at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Walker D. Leach officiating. Burial will be in Rehoboth Cemetery. Survivors include his companion, Gladys  Taylor of Dyersburg; three daughters, Jere Williams, Debbie Wiemann and Daphne Johnson, all of Galesburg, Ill.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Pallbearers were Stoy Permenter, Ray Cook, Bobby Williamson, Robert Hubbard, Jimmy Sentell and Chris Sentell.

Dyersburg Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Saturday in Poplar Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Anita Holland Pringle and the Rev. Tommy Jowers officiating.  Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Curry & Son Funeral Home with Brother Mike  Johnson and Brother Lynn Drumright officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
