J.C. Maddox, 92, of Jackson, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Forest Cove Manor. He was an educator in Kentucky and West Tennessee. He graduated with honors from Murray (Ky.) State College and George Peabody College. At Arlington, Ky., he began his career as a teacher and initiated the girls' basketball program, leading the first-year team undefeated to the state tournament. From Arlington, he served as principal at schools in Milburn, Lone Oak and Sedalia, all in Kentucky. He moved to Tennessee in 1947 and served as superintendent of the Union City schools until 1958. He was instrumental in bringing the first new high school to the area and re-establishing the band program. Next, he served as superintendent of schools in Dyersburg from 1958 to 1964, before returning to Kentucky as superintendent of Mayfield City Schools. He led the effort to bring a much-needed new high school facility to Mayfield before his retirements in 1970.
He served on the Tennessee Superintendents Study Council for two terms and was a member of the Tennessee Teachers Tenure Commission for six years, two of these as chairman. An active community leader, He was president of the Murray State College Alumni Association and a life-time members of the National Education Association and the American Association of School Administrators. He held membership in the Kentucky and Tennessee education associations and all local educational associations in addition to the local Kiwanis and Rotary clubs. In Jackson, he was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jackson, serving on several boards and committees.

Ina Stevens, 70, of Philadelphia, Miss., died Monday, March 25, 2002 at Neshoba County General Hospital in Philadelphia, Miss. She was a sewing machine operator, a nurse's aide and a member of Friendship Assembly of God in Philadelphia. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of McClain-Hays Funeral Home in Philadelphia, Miss. with the Rev. Clifford Jinkerson and the Rev. Tony Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Bethsaida Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Claude Stevens of Philadelphia; three sons, James Stevens and Dewayne Stevens, both of Philadelphia and Donnie Stevens of Newbern; a brother, Johnny Nicholson of Philadelphia; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Stevens; and her parents, Charlie and Donie Nicholson. Pallbearers will be Billy Watkins, Bryan Glen, Jason Savell, Jimmy Tolbert, William Smith and Bill Nicholson.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Yorkville Cemetery with Brother Frank Parish officiating. Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Retired Col. Joseph Webster Jones Jr., 83, of Newbern, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Dyer Nursing Home in Dyer. He was a fighter pilot and career military officer in the United States Air Force and Defense Intelligence Agency. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He served as air attaché in Oslo, Norway. A graduate of the University of Tennessee and Tulane University, he was president and trustee of the Tennessee Library Association and a member of the Daedalian Society. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Dossie Wheatley officiating. Burial will be in Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, S.C., at a later date.
