Irene Thomas
GIBSON-Services for Mrs. Irene James Thomas, 93, were Saturday at the Gibson Baptist Church with her son-in-law, Rev. Max Walker and Rev. Mike Rhodes officiating. Burial was in the White Rose Cemetery. Bodkin Funeral Home had charge. Mrs. Thomas, a retired schoolteacher with the Gibson High School, passed away Thursday. She was born in Gibson, daughter of the late Robert Nestor and Mary Bass James and had lived in Gibson most of her life. She was a very active member of the Gibson Baptist Church. She was a charter member of the Progressive Study Club of Gibson. Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Gibson County Retired Teachers’ Association. She was a member of the 1927-28 Tennessee All State Basketball Team and was actively involved in the Gibson High School Alumni Association. She was fondly remembered by many as ‘Miss Irene’. She was a 1932 graduate of Union University, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and was a Alpha Tau Omega Queen. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Guy James. Surviving are two daughters, Sally Thomas Morse of memphis and Ann Thomas Walker of Selmer; four grandchildren, Jim Morse and Tom Morse, both of Memphis, Cherlyn Field of Germantown and Carolyn Ratliff of Coppell, TX and six great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be directed to the Gibson Baptist Church.

Calvin Blankenship
LEXINGTON-Calvin Blankenship, 78, retired Lexington Fire Chief, died Sunday at his home. Services were Tuesday at Reed’s Chapel in Lexington with burial in Hare Cemetery. He was a member of Fairview Church of Christ. Mr. Blankenship leaves six daughters, Susan McWhorter and Lynne Cooper, both of IN, Dorothy Jones of Allgood, Brenda Seagraves and Linda Blankenship. both of Lexington and Cathy Halford of Atwood; three sons, Robert Blankenship and James Calvin Blankenship, both of AR and Frankie Dale Blankenship of Lexington; four sisters, Alice Hays, Nina Sue Crowe and Betty Lou Crowe, all of Lexington and Ann Jenkins of Memphis; and two brothers, Leonard & Cecil Blankenship, both of Lexington, 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Bodkin Funeral Home with burial in Liberty Cemetery in Camden. She was a member of the Trenton Church of Christ. Mrs. Madden, the wife of Johnny Madden, also leaves two sons, Joe Thomas Stewart and wife Christy of Milan and Mark Stacey Stewart of Medina; a daughter, Rebecca Jane Burton of Trezevant; three step-sisters, Lockiel Guest and Mary Schoonover, both of Trenton, and Nollie Phelps of Milan, and 5 grandchildren, Allen Griggs Jr., Courtney Burton, Jennifer Stewart, Tiffany Stewart and John Mark Stewart.

Auddie Wade
PARIS-Auddie Elroy Wade, 79, machine operator at Holley Carburetor Plant for 30 years, died Saturday at Henry County Medical Center. Services were Monday at Ridgeway Funeral Home with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Paris. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a WWII Army veteran. Mr. Wade, the husband of Monell Wade, also leaves a sister, Mary Charlene Chappell of Bradford and several nieces and nephews.

MARTIN-Paula Harris Travis, 54, homemaker, died Thursday at Weakley County Nursing Home in Dresden. Services were Sunday at Murphy Funeral Home with burial in East Side Cemetery. She was a member of Ralston Baptist Church. She was Little Miss Jackson in 1953 and Little Miss Fairview in 1956. Mrs. Travis, the wife of Ronnie Travis, also leaves a stepson, Trenton Travis of Dresden; a stepdaughter, Lisa Holowell of South Fulton; a sister, Linda Killebrew of Milan.

James Gurley
SPRING CREEK-Funeral services for James Ray Gurley, 75, were Saturday at Replogle-Lawrence Funeral Home in Medina with Minister Don McCaslin officiating. Burial was in Highland Memorial Gardens in Jackson. Mr. Gurley died Tuesday, November 23, after a long illness. He was born in Madison County. Mr. Gurley was a member of Sunset View Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gearl Dean Gurley of Spring Creek; a daughter, Tosha Dodds and husband Tony of Lexington; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.

MILAN-Doris Lucille Reeves Capps, 90, retired co-owner of Milan Supermarked, died Thursday at NHC Healthcare. Cryptside services were Sunday at Gibson County Memory Gardens. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Milan and the Union Central FCE Club. Mrs. Capps, the widow of Herman Capps, leaves three granddaughters, Wendy Ferrell of Milan, Cathy Hull of Wildersville and Maggie Ginn of Memphis; four great-granddaughters, Mary Elizabeth Ferrell of Milan, Nika Ginn and Cara Ginn, both of Memphis, and Malinda Leigh Ferrell of Milan. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Hull.

Mr. Thetford, the husband of Patsy Thetford, also leaves two daughters, Debra Thompson of Linden and Denise Thetford of Milan; a brother, Jerry Thetford and a sister, Janice Martin, both of Milan; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Vivian Estes
Funeral services for Vivian F. Hamilton Estes, age 88, will be at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Sunday, April 3, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Linda Glenn and Reverend Al Gritten officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Estes passed away on Thursday, March 31 at Humboldt General Hospital after a short illness. Mrs Estes was born on October 12, 1916 to the late Leonard S. and Kathleen Garrett Hamilton. She was a long time member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Humboldt where she served as Elder, Sunday School teacher and was an active member of the CPW. She will be remembered for her beautiful needlework and was affectionately known as "Grandmother" to her many friends and family in Humboldt. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, the late James B. Estes Sr, her brother, Rene S. Hamilton and a very special niece, Patsy Hamilton Weatherly. She is survived by her son, James bond (Jack) Estes, Jr. and wife, Martha of Humboldt, three sisters, Mary Lynn Downey of Milan, Martha J. Stoltz of Medina and Betty Ann Strayhorn of Dyersburg, one Grandson, Jon Blanton Estes of Humboldt and several nieces and nephews.

William Keaton
William Capelle Keaton, former Mayor of Hohenwald, devoted husband for 71 years and respected attorney for more than six decades, died March 25, in Maury Regional Hospital at age 91.
Born July 21, 1913, in Milan TN, to John J. and Hattie Capelle Keaton, he attended Vanderbilt University and remained a lifelong, loyal fan of the Commodores. He married the former Lillian Stephens. He worked for the TN Hwy. Dept. in the 1930’s and earned his law degree through night classes at the Nashville School of Law and admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1940.
He practiced law in Milan for several years in the firm of Rhoades and Keaton. Enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served as a Sergeant with the Signal Corps in the Philippines. Settled in Hohenwald after the war and opened a law office on the second floor of the First National Bank building. He also owned Keaton Insurance Agency for many years and practiced law into his late 80’s, arguing a case before the Court of Appeals of Tennessee in 2000. He was Mayor of Hohenwald from 1951 to 1967, named Tennessee Mayor of the Year in 1958 by the Tennessee Municipal League of which he served as president. He was on the executive committee of the National League of Cities. From 1959 to 1971. He was vice chairman of the State Board of Equalization and from 1975 to 1996 and served on the Assessment Appeal Commission. He was a founding member of the local Five County Bar and was a fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation. He was a member of the Tennessee Bar Association Board of Governors and the American Judicare Society. He also served as a member judge of the Court of the Judiciary for eight years. He received the Civic Heritage Award from the Hohenwald Chamber of Commerce and was honored as an Outstanding Alumnus of the Nashville College of Law. An avid golfer for many years and a founding member of the Hohenwald Golf Club, he was a long time member of the Hohenwald United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother LeRoy Keaton. Surviving are his wife of 71 years Lillian, son William Capelle Keaton, Jr., and daughter in law Belma of Brentwood, daughter Camille Kelley of Hohenwald, five granddaughters, four great-grandchildren, two step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Monday at the Hohenwald United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Swiss Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Hohenwald United Methodist Church endowment fund. McDonald Funeral Home was in charge.

MILAN-Rebecca Conway Peek, 81, retired Henry I. Siegel & ITT employee, died Sunday at NHC Healthcare. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trezevant Cemetery. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Trezevant. Mrs. Peek, the widow of L.J. Conway & Luther Peek, leaves a son, Kenneth Dan (Sue) Conway of Humboldt, 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Denton and a sister, Elizabeth Jarrett.
