"Tracing Our Roots" Newsletter Archive (A monthly genealogy newsletter written by the late Brenda Kellow, dec'd, for the Plano Star Courier newspaper. We've included all the ones we could recover.)
The highly professional and technologically advanced genealogy program Legacy Family Tree 4.0 is the latest release of this much sought after free software. As soon as I read the new features I immediately upgraded to the Legacy 4.0 Deluxe edition that comes with a CD to load on my other computers and a comprehensive and easily read Owner s Manual, for $19.95. The Standard Edition is free, whether as an upgrade if you already have 3.0, or you are using Legacy for the first time. The book can be purchased separately as can the CD for $1, or the video for a small cost.
I wanted it the minute I saw the Chronology View and Report, and the Index View. Years ago my husband wrote for me a DOS program to handle the chronology for my research subjects. I feel this feature is invaluable for examining dates and events in chronological order. I love the program he built for me and I love my husband, but I have always hated DOS. Legacy is a Windows program that I can use and the Chronology View is an apt replacement for my old DOS program. Sorry Mac users, there is no Legacy for you at this time.
The Index View in Legacy 4.0 is easier than uploading my information into MS Excel and deciding which delimiter to use. On both the Chronology View and the Index View I just click on the index tab and they instantly appear with all the information I have inputted into the individual or family.
I also like the fun feature of showing a slide presentation of all the pictures I have scanned of my family lines and those of my husband and son-in-law. To activate, just click on View, then Scrapbook, and then scroll down to Slider Presentation. It is as nice as the MS OS 2002 screen saver, but it is included in the Legacy package.
Many other items and developments are attached to the new 4.0 edition. To examine the online tutor or to view and read about all the new advancements and additions, go to the Legacy web site at www.LegacyFamilyTree.com and examine this powerful free program. Add-ons cost extra, but certainly worth looking at if you have not yet done so.
