"Tracing Our Roots" Newsletter Archive (A monthly genealogy newsletter written by the late Brenda Kellow, dec'd, for the Plano Star Courier newspaper. We've included all the ones we could recover.)
There is no excuse! Genealogy Friends is offering many opportunities during the next three weeks to fulfill your genealogical needs.
This coming Saturday, April 20, 2002, is another Free Saturday Morning Seminar guaranteed to answer your questions and explain your findings on multiple parents and the 1930 census.
The first talk is on extended families, Making Order out of Chaos. I use the term extended not as a pun, but to try to define life, as we know it, among kin living in the current times. I am talking about having three sets of parents and a sane method for recording them in our history. Three sets of parents you say just as we are just getting used to cloning sheep! Yes, birth parents, adoptive parents, and step parents. Identifying and recording extended families in an orderly fashion is the specialty of presenter Bill Hallas. This is a must-hear lecture.
The second talk, an introduction to the just released 1930 census, is by yours truly. I cover the questions asked on the 1930 census, and provide sources to consult to help you with searching this difficult census. It is difficult because it has only a few Soundexes, and because of the hidden difficulties lurking inside. I will also have 1930 blank census and Soundex forms. Hopefully my talk will introduce you to the census and make it easier for you to research when it arrives in Harrington library.
The 1930 Texas census that Genealogy Friends purchased for Harrington Library Genealogy Section should be arriving any time now.
The site for the Free Saturday Morning Seminars is at Harrington Library, 1501 East 18th Street, Plano. Doors open at 9:10 and the talks begin at 9:30. If you come early Genealogy Friends invites you to help set up the free coffee, the tables, and the chairs.
The second event is next week, Friday evening, April 26, from 6-11, Genealogy Friends hosts with the Library the quarterly Library Lock-in. Pizza will be served at 7:15. Be there early, preferably by 5:30 p.m. If you have questions, call Stella at 972-424-1373, StellFi@aol.com, or Jennifer at 972-517-4795, djz.pitts@verizon.net.
