"Tracing Our Roots" Newsletter Archive (A monthly genealogy newsletter written by the late Brenda Kellow, dec'd, for the Plano Star Courier newspaper. We've included all the ones we could recover.)
Searching colonial records is challenging and surprising. Thanks to Peter Wilson Coldham for making this task a little easier. He has updated his two 1980s books titled The Complete Book of Emigrants in Bondage and English Adventurers and Emigrants covering the difficult years between 1600 and into the late-1700s. With the recent publications, he fills in the gaps that he mentioned in the earlier books. The formats for the two new books are in basically the same formats as the earlier ones and presented with the expertise we expect from Coldham.
More Emigrants in Bondage 1614-1775 covers felons sentenced to transportation to America, biographical notes of many of these felons, and convict ships to the American colonies 1716-1776.
More English Adventurers and Emigrants 1625-1777, Abstracts of Examinations in the High Court of Admiralty with Reference to Colonial America is a culmination of the need to investigate alternative sources, which uncovered the gems in this book. The advanced researcher knows the importance of examining little known sources for answers to conquering genealogy and family history research questions.
Both of Coldham s books are available from Genealogical Publishing Company, 1001 N. Calvert Street, Baltimore, MD 21202, (800) 296-6687, or from their web site at www.genealogical.com. More Emigrants in Bondage 1614-1775, number 1124, is $30. More English Adventurers and Emigrants 1625-1777, number 1094, is $25. Please add $3.50 postage and handling for the first book and $1.25 for each additional book.

EVOLUTION OF US CENSUS: Would you like to know the historical development and significance of the US census from 1790 all the way through to the year 2000? You can download a 140 page pdf file published by the US Census Bureau called Measuring America: The Decennial Censuses from 1790-2000 which shows images and descriptions of each census decade. It also includes the enumerators instruction for filling out the form. The 15 MB file is free to download, but you will need Acrobat Reader. That too can be downloaded free at www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html. The download took about nine minutes to download. The information within the pages is certainly worth the effort.
