HELP FOR NORTH CAROLINA AND NOVA SCOTIA RESEARCHERS
INDEX TO NORTH CAROLINA JOURNAL
by Brenda Kellow, CG
The “North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal” was founded 27 years ago and it grew into one of the leading periodical in the field. It typically covers genealogical articles, biographical sketches, family records, bible records, letters, memoirs, diary extracts, lists of early settlers, cemetery inscriptions to list only a few topics.
Available as a reprint by Clearfield (Genealogical Publishing Company), William Doub Bennett prepared a consolidated index of volumes from the years ranging from 1975-1984 covering volumes one through 19. The index, number CF9027, is available in print for $27 plus $3.50 shipping and handling from the publisher over the Internet at www.genealogical.com/item_detail.cfm?ID=9027, or by calling 1-800-296-6687.
NOVA SCOTIA GENEALOGIES
“Yarmouth Nova Scotia Genealogies Transcribed from the Yarmouth Herald” is another valuable reprint from Clearfield Publishing Company because in it George Brown traced the New England families who migrated to Nova Scotia around the time of the Revolutionary War. In Brown’s columns in the Yarmouth Herald he focused on these families, many of whom were Mayflower colonists, tracing their generations from the old world through to the late 19th century in article after article. His columns ran from 1896 to 1910 but are difficult to find.
The difficulty in availability did not deter Martha and Bill Reamy from indexing all the columns they could find. They indexed 186 articles that included over 60,000 individuals. Clearfield sites this publication as the “preeminent work on Nova Scotia genealogy.”
The book, item number GPC705 sells normally for $60, but is available now for $36 plus $3.50 shipping and handling. It is is from the publisher over the Internet at www.genealogical.com/item_detail.cfm?ID=9027, or by calling 1-800-296-6687.
ELLIS ISLAND DATABASE
The Ellis Island database is still easy to search now that Stephen P. Morse and the Ellis Island folks have worked out the legalities with which Morse was faced earlier in the month. The joining of the two gives us an even faster search as we hunt ports, ships’ names, ethnicity and more. Try out the Ellis Island original site at www.ellisisland.org or Morse’ temporary site at www.avotaynu.com/ellis.html.
BUCKNER ORPHAN’S HOME
