1867 COLLIN COUNTY TEXAS VOTER REGISTRATION INDEXED
by Brenda Kellow, BA, CG
The microfilmed and published lists for counties located in the Gulf States of Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina are extant. Also extant are those for North Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana. There are no Voter Registrations Lists for Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, or Maryland. The Voter Registration lists are of considerable value to family researchers not only as a substitute census identifying men who survived the Civil War, but also because it describes how long each African American and white adult male had been living in the precinct, the county, and the state; the state where he was born; and, if he could write, his signature appears on the image.
The 1867 Voter Registration is a countywide registration of Southern white and African-American males over the age of twenty-one. It includes names of voters who registered during the Reconstruction period, following the Civil War, between 1867 through 1869. The registration does include a few, albeit infrequent, entries dating from as late as 1870.
This newly published index is doubly important because it is two indexes in one. It is cataloged alphabetically to save valuable time searching for the surname on a microfilm reader; and, chronologically showing family, friends and neighbors who registered the same day.
Although some Voter Registration lists appear in the Election Returns series of Secretary of State records, the Texas group of ledgers contains the State Archives' only comprehensive listing of eligible voters in the state.
The original volumes have been microfilmed, and the film copies are available to be viewed at the Texas State Library and at Gladys Harrington Library. Those not living in the Austin or Plano area may request the microfilm on interlibrary loan.
The surname and chronological index is copyrighted by Genealogy Friends of Plano Libraries, Inc. and sells for $20 plus $4 shipping and handling. Order from Genealogy Friends, P.O. Box 860477, Plano, TX 75086-0477.
