"Tracing Our Roots" Newsletter Archive (A monthly genealogy newsletter written by the late Brenda Kellow, dec'd, for the Plano Star Courier newspaper. We've included all the ones we could recover.)
Southern Historical Press just reprinted a colonial Virginia parish record from their 1949 personal collection. This is one of the 15 available titles out of a total of 50 possible parishes. Lucky are those having roots in colonial Lynnhaven Parish during the period 1723-1786.
Lynnhaven was selected to be the first in a series to be republished because of its historical value relating to Virginia parish records. Included are the proceedings of the parish vestry through reorganization after the disestablishment of the Church of England in 1785 when the Protestant Episcopal Church replaced it. Then in 1785 the church s duties were passed to the Overseers of the Poor.
It has an every name index and is updated to reflect modern abbreviations and symbols. Also included is an appendix listing the rectors, wardens, vestrymen and presiding officers. Further publications will cover more of the colonial period. Preceding the actual records is a brief history.
Colonial Vestry Book of Lynnhaven Parish, 1723-1786 includes only the colonial and post-Revolutionary portions. Those whose collections do not contain this early title from the original publication have the opportunity to purchase it now from Southern Historical Press, Inc., P. O. Box 1267, Greenville, SC 29602-1267, or call 1-800-233-0152, for $28.50 plus shipping and handling.
