Homer Leon Mills Jr.
1944-2015
Surrounded by loved ones, Homer Leon "Buddy" Mills Jr., 70, of Medina, passed into the presence of God Saturday, Sept. 26, in Kerrville.
He was born in San Antonio on Nov. 5, 1944, to Doris Robbins Mills and Homer Leon Mills Sr. Buddy married
the love of his life, Elayne Walker, on May 5, 1979.
After attending parochial school, Texas Military Institute and McArthur High School in San Antonio, Buddy graduated from St. Mary's University with a degree in history.
He served in college ROTC and received a commission as second lieutenant in the United States Army in February 1970. Buddy's training as a forward observer took him to several military stations, including Fort Bragg, Fort Sam Houston and Fort Bliss. He particularly enjoyed serving as information officer at Fort Sam Houston. After serving honorably, he was discharged as a captain in February 1976.
Buddy entered the private work force as a warehouse and personnel manager for Central States Diversified. He later worked as a warehouse manager for Wal-Mart until accepting a job at Bandera Electric Cooperative in 1990. He retired after 22 years of faithful service on the job.
Buddy had many passions throughout his life. As a young man, his passion was split between Little League baseball and hunting. In 1956, he played on the Highland Park Lions All Star Team.
His mother introduced him to hunting by sitting him on her lap in a deer blind in Leon Valley, which began his lifelong passion for the outdoors. He and his parents hunted South Texas and the Hill Country all their lives, resulting in many trophy whitetails.
In time, however, Buddy's focus shifted to "hunting" with his camera. His collections of thousands of photographs of deer and other animals, sunsets and the Texas landscape revealed his true artistic gift. Many of his photos have been published, including one selected for the cover of the 10th anniversary edition of the Texas Trophy Hunters Magazine.
Buddy had a deep love for all animals, both wildlife and his precious kitties and dogs. He also loved to browse junk shops and antique stores, shopping for his beloved Elayne. He shopped all year long and had many hiding places for his finds.
Buddy was a man of strong but quiet faith in the Lord. He felt closest to the Lord as he interacted with all of the beauty that God revealed to him through nature.
He is survived by his wife, Elayne, and numerous relatives. Buddy was predeceased by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am, Saturday, Oct. 3, at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera, with Pastor Bill Stegemueller officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Rest cemetery in Medina.
Pallbearers will be John Stein, Eddie Rowe, Clay Walker, Josh Friedman, Larry Friedman and Charlie Walker. Honorary pallbearers are Randy MacNaughton, Joe Limon, Jim Stinebaugh, Robert Fox, James Keller and Ron Mercier.
Memorials may be given to Peterson Hospice in Kerrville, Medina United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
Elayne extends special thanks to Peterson Hospice, Hilltop Village, Bill Stegemueller, Buddy's brother and sisters and family and the many friends who have ministered to her during Buddy's long illness
