Diane Crabb
Diane Sanchez Crabb, 52, of Bandera, died
Thursday, March 21, 2002, in a Kerrville hospital. Mrs. Crabb, a resident of Bandera for two years and a prior resident of Center Point, was born
Aug. 29, 1949, in Tahoka, Texas, to Joe Sanchez Sr. and Gloria Hernandez Sanchez. Mrs. Crabb was a Catholic and a housewife. Survivors include her husband, Mike Crabb of Center Point; two daughters, Gloria Brummeo and Marie Crabb, both of San Antonio; three sons, Kenneth Ray Crabb of San Antonio, Michael J. Crabb of Sugarland and Daniel Crabb of Bandera; a sister, Esperanta Harris of San Antonio; two brothers, Joe Sanchez of San Antonio and Angel Garza of Kerrville and numerous grandchildren. Graveside services were held Saturday, March 23 at Mt. View Cemetery
in Kerrville. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
Paul Shiflet
Paul Shiflet, 80, of Pipe Creek died
on Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Wilford Hall. He was born
to Asa and Lottie Shiflet on Aug. 4, 1921 in Piqua, Ohio. He was a retired Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force. He retired in 1971 after 27 years. Mr. Shiflet was an avid golfer and supporter of Bandera ISDıs athletic programs. He had purchased season tickets for the 2001 Bulldog football season although health problems kept him from attending. Survivors include his wife Madeline Shiflet of Pipe Creek, one daughter, Ann Edwards and husband Bob of Pipe Creek, one son, Billy Shiflet and wife Rickie of Hawaii, 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren from the states of Texas, California and Hawaii. Visiting hours are Thursday, March 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home at 6321 Bandera Road. Funeral services will be on Friday, March 29 at 1:30 p.m. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home. Interment
will be at Ft. Sam Houston. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
Kathryn Dewoody
Kathryn Elizabeth Dewoody, 95, died
at her home in Bandera on March 23, 2002, three weeks after learning that she had a brain tumor. She was born
in Springfield, Ill., April 23, 1906, the only child of Bertha Newkirk and Glenn Allen Sheperd. As an infant, she moved with her parents to Texas where her father installed telephone systems for Bell Telephone Company. In 1924 she graduated with honors from Brackenridge High School, San Antonio. She then moved to Dilley where she met and married
Alonzo Ward (Lonnie) Dewoody in 1929. He died
in 1970. She loved sewing, gardening, and reading. She was an active member of Bandera United Methodist Church and the Bandera Fine Arts Club. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Brient and husband Bill, and Ruth Hay and husband Ray Marvin, all of Bandera; grandchildren Bob Brient and wife Paulette of San Antonio, Jim Brient and wife Kathy of Missouri City, Tom Hay and wife Stacy of Bandera, Brenda Pope and husband Mark of Bellville; great-grandchildren Whitney, Evan, Jordan, and Jared Brient, Kevin and Alix Hay, and Alyssa and Alec Pope; and great-great-granddaughter Haley Brient. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, at the Bandera United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in the Dilley Cemetery, Dilley, Texas. Her grandsons and great-grandson will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Sid Peterson Hospice, Kerrville, Texas; Bandera United Methodist Church building fund or the Dilley Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Mickey Dubbs
Maxine 'Mickey' Dubbs, 72, of Bandera, died
Tuesday, March 29, 2002 at her residence. She was born
April 20, 1929 in Pine River, Minn. to Dale and Dorothy Rust Dubbs. She had lived in Bandera for the past 16 years and was a retired drug store assistant manager. Survivors include three brothers, Dale R. Dubbs of Seminole, Ala., Richard H. Dubbs of Kalispel, Mont., and Donald E. Dubbs of Bandera. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Delrose Dubbs who died
on July 13, 1998. A memorial service and private interment
will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel.
Maj. J.O. Hayhurst
Major Joseph O. Hayhurst, 71, of Pipe Creek, died
Monday, March 25, 2002 in a San Antonio hospital. He was born
Oct. 31, 1930 in Belton, Texas to Dr. Wendell Owen Hayhurst and Gene Fellraph Smith Hayhurst. On June 12, 1979, he married
Charlotte Peterson in Las Vegas, Nev. She survives. He retired from the Army as a Major, received his Masterıs Degree in Anthropology from the University of Texas, and was a loving husband and father. In addition to his wife Charlotte of Pipe Creek, survivors include two daughters, Jill Hayhurst of Canada and Cynthia Stephenson and husband Barry of Louisiana; two sons, Owen W. Hayhurst and wife Kay of Pipe Creek, and Karl Hayhurst and wife Kristine of Killeen; and nine grandchildren. A private family service will be held later. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
John Kleibrink Sr.
John Kleibrink Sr., 80, of Pipe Creek, died
Monday, March 25, 2002 in a San Antonio hospital. He was born
Aug. 8, 1921 in Ennigerloh, Germany, to Heinrich and Elizabeth Quante Kleibrink. On Jan. 15, 1943, he married
Mabel Harman in Hammonton, New Jersey. She survives. He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps, owned and operated Kleibrink Plumbing Shop in San Antonio for 50 years and he was a well known rock hound. In addition to his wife Mabel of Pipe Creek, survivors include one daughter, Ruth Hartmann and husband Richard of San Antonio; son, John Kleibrink Jr., and wife Rebecca of San Antonio; sister, Elsa Jordan of North Carolina; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held Saturday, March 30 at the Lakehills United Methodist Church with Rev. Ellen Ely officiating. A private interment
will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Melba King
A former resident in Bandera County Melba King died
this month in Kingsland, Texas. She was the wife of Joe King, who was principal of Bandera High School for many years. Mrs. King taught in the elementary school in Bandera when it was in the historic two-story building on what is now the middle school campus. Joe and Melba also owned and operated the the King's Ranch for Girls, a summer camp on the Medina River. After they sold the camp it became Camp Serendip and was active until after the 1978 flood. The Kings kept part of the camp property and developed a pecan orchard, known as Pecan Valley. Their pecans won many local and state awards. They retired to a home on Lake LBJ in Kingsland, Texas, and Melba was living in an assisted-living home there when she died. Survivors include two sons, Bryan and Joe and their families.
