Matthew Wood
Matthew Wood, 75, of Pipe Creek, died
Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at his residence. He was born
June 18, 1927, in Detroit, Mich. On Dec. 23, 1950, he married
Quince L. King in Leona. Mr. Wood retired after 25 years active duty with the U.S. Army. He was a very skilled carpenter and watch repairman. Survivors include his wife Quince of Pipe Creek; three daughters, Brenda W. Dillard and husband Bennie M. of Pipe Creek, Glenda W. Scales and husband Hurles E., Jr., of Dallas and Machielle W. Denmon and husband Byron E. of Heidelberg, Germany; one son, Michael W. Wood of San Antonio; one sister, Mary Louise White of Detroit, Mich.; and eight grandchildren. Services were held Jan. 17, at Windcrest Methodist Church, with the Reverends Greg Hackett and Ray Davis officiating. Interment
was at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Pipe Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapels of Bandera.
Jessica Sheppard
Jessica Sheppard, 17, of Pipe Creek died
on Sunday, Jan. 12 in a vehicle accident near Pipe Creek.
Jessica was born
on Feb. 26, 1985, in Las Vegas, Nev. to William Wade Sheppard and Deborah Ann Ottmar Sheppard.
She was a junior at Bandera High School.
Survivors include her father Wade Sheppard and wife Alma of Pipe Creek, her mother Debbie Meyers and husband Mike of W. Va., grandparents Bennie and Pat Barker of Austin and Bill and Gina Sheppard of Pipe Creek; two sisters, Brittani Sheppard of Pipe Creek and Delia Ramirez of Kerrville; three brothers, James Sheppard of Pipe Creek, David Ramirez and Danny Ramirez of Pipe Creek, and two aunts, Kathi Timm of Coppell and Becky Fleetwood of Alaska. Services are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Kral officiating. Interment
will follow in the Bandera Cemetery.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Tisha Rae Enyart
Tisha Rae Enyart, 24, of Bandera, died
Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in a Dallas hospital. She was born
April 10, 1978, in Lexington, Ky., to Ricky Miller and Paula Ruth Wortman Miller. She was a member of the New Vision Church of Bandera. Tisha was an awesome woman of God with a true servant's heart who fought for every breath of life for almost 25 years. Survivors include her husband, Roy Enyart and her mother Paula Ruth Miller of Kerrville. Graveside services were held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 4050 Highway 16 South. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Vision Church of Bandera, P.O. Box 1059, Bandera, TX 78003. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Jesse Lee Hendon
Jesse Lee Hendon, 65, a resident of Bandera County since 1988, died
at his home near Bandera on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003. He was born
on Aug. 3, 1937, at Ruleville, Miss., to Norris Manuel Hendon and Minnie Lee Fansler Hendon. On June 3, 1958, in Yellville, Ark., he married
Jo Ann Huett, who survives him. In his early years, Mr. Hendon was a home builder with his father-in-law in Mountain Home, Ark. Later he became a heavy equipment operator developing subdivisions and burying underground telephone cable and rural water lines. He owned and operated Jesse Hendon Construction Company prior to his retirement in 1985. He will be remembered for his hard work and dedication to his family and friends, and will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched. Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Hendon of Bandera; two daughters, Deborah Arnold and husband David of Osage City, Kan., and Teresa Habegger and husband Larry of Norman, Okla.; three sons, Tommy Hendon and wife Susan of Norman, Okla., Michael Hendon and Jesse Allen Hendon of Bandera; a special family member, Malcolm Olsen of Kerrville; a sister, Mary Ann Samuels of Beebee, Ark.; nephew Butch Samuels of Vidor; great-aunt Josie Orr of Thornton, Ark.; 13 grandchildren, Lori Arnold, Ryan Arnold, Amy Habegger, Austin Habegger, Lance Hendon, Landon Hendon, Lynnette Hendon, Aaron Hendon, Reva Hendon, Miranda Hendon, Cameron Hendon, Haley Hendon and Randall Olsen; and two great-grandchildren, Alexis Hardin and Caden Reed. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 20, at Grimes Chapel in Bandera with Chaplain Jack Cooke officiating. Interment
followed in Bandera cemetery
with David Arnold, Larry Habegger, Elezar Bermudez, Malcolm Olsen, Ryan Arnold and Austin Habegger serving as pallbearers. Lance Hendon and Landon Hendon were honorary pallbearers. James Robert Turner, Jr.
James Robert "Bob" Turner, Jr., 82, of Pipe Creek, died
Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, in a San Antonio hospital. He was born
Feb. 7, 1920, in Odenton, Md., to James Robert Turner and Rosina Baynes Turner. He was educated in public schools in Maryland and graduated from Anne Arundel High School in 1937. He graduated from the University of Baltimore Law School with his LLB degree in 1941. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 6, 1941, and served in Oahu, New Guinea, Letye and Luzon. During WWII he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army as a platoon sergeant assigned to the 149th Infantry Regiment, 38th Infantry and served 23 months in the Pacific Theatre, where he instructed and led a platoon of 26 enlisted men in a rifle company and was responsible for the care and welfare of his platoon. Among the commendations he received were the Combat Infantry Badge and a Bronze Star. In Dallas, on Oct. 22, 1947, he married
Mary Martha "Marte" Wacther, who preceded him in death on July 31, 1998. Prior to moving to Bandera County over 30 years ago, they resided in San Antonio where he was employed by USAA, from which he retired as a senior claim attorney. He was a member of the American Legion 410, the VFW and helped various organizations set up scholarship funds for the students of Bandera High School. He was a member of Bandera United Methodist Church and was active in community affairs. He has been a resident of Bandera County since 1970. Survivors include one daughter, Joan Marie Warren and husband Mark of Pipe Creek; one brother, Melvin Turner of Gambrills, Md.; two grandsons, Turner Augustus Warner and Cole Baynes Warren of Pipe Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held at Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Mission Burial Park North in San Antonio, followed by services at Bandera United Methodist Church with Rev. Cheryl Owens officiating. Visitation was held at Grimes Funeral Chapel Monday, Jan. 20. Memorials may be made to the Bandera United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 128, Bandera, TX 78003 or Hospice of San Antonio. Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera was in charge of arrangements.
Lucille Stokes
The family and the Medina community grieve the loss of Mrs. Lucille Stokes. She died
Monday, Feb. 3, 2002, at the age of 81, during a heart cauterization procedure. Lucille Fay Stokes was born
March 26, 1921 to John Grady and Rachel Evelyn (Miller) McHaney, in Fredericksburg.
The McHaneys owned a dairy on Valley View Ranch and later operated the Magnolia Service Station and Medina Lumber Company in Medina. King Henry Stokes and Lu McHaney were marriage, October 31, 1936.
Shortly after they were marriage, they built the rock house in Medina, which now is the Love Creek Cider Mill Store. Mrs. Stokes worked in the family business with her dad, John McHaney, at the Medina Lumber Company, until her children graduated from high school in Medina. During much of their marriage, King was in the oilfield working as an independent drilling contractor.
In 1963, they began Stokes Pipe and Supply in Sommerset, Texas.
Then in 1982, they sold their business and moved to Medina full time.
She will be remembered for her community volunteer involvement.
She has served as a member and in leadership positions in the garden club, Eastern Star, and United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Stokes was chosen "Miss Apple Blossom" by Medina Texas Development Corp. in 1992.
Lucille Stokes is survived by her husband, King Stokes; a son, O. King Stokes of Riverside, Belize; and a daughter, Sandra and her husband Louis Vannatter of Medina; a sister, Dorothy LeStourgeon of Medina; and a brother, Jack Grady McHaney of Medina. She had the blessing of two natural grandchildren and nine additional grandchildren: Nathan Vannatter, Jordan Vannatter, Grant Vannatter, Shannon Carbery, Deena Pate, Rhonda Dorsch, Augusta Alex Wooldridge, Tim Sheppard, and Conner Sheppard; and two great grandchildren, Alyssa Vannatter and Tristan Vannatter. A memorial service was held Feb. 8 at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Bandera with Rev. Harold Zirkel and Louis Vannatter officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
