Gretchen Murphy
1950-2014
Gretchen Murphy, 63, loving wife, companion and mother, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, in Pipe Creek. She was born Sept. 22, 1950 in Huntington Park, California.
Gretchen married
Robert Murphy on Dec. 22, 1972 in South Gate, California.
After graduating from Huntington Park High School, she attended East Los Angeles Junior College until her marriage.
Gretchen then joined her husband at Technical School at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, and then accompanied him to his first duty assignment at San Vito De Normanni Air Station in Italy.
After their tour in Italy ended, the couple returned to the United States, settling in San Antonio where they resided until Robert retired from active duty. The couple moved to Pipe Creek in 2004.
Gretchen is survived by her husband of 41 years, Robert; children, Jonathon, Sean and Jeremy; and sisters, Cindi Bagdanove and Melinda Burwell; and brother Clifford Lotz, as well as by six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gretchen was predeceased by her parents, Wilbert H., and Melba C. Lotz, who were both veterans of World War II.
Visitation will be from 6 pm to 8 pm, Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera.
Funeral services will be held at 11:15 am, Thursday, Feb. 13, at Fort Sam Houston National cemetery in San Antonio.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral chapels of Bandera, Texas.
Phil Maurice Grothues
1941-2012
Phil Maurice Grothues, 70, of Kerrville, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, in San Antonio. He was born in San Antonio to Phil and Agnes Grothues on July 29, 1941.
Phil married
Marlene Leibold on June 2, 1962, in Bandera.
He graduated from Central Catholic High School and earned a Bachelor's of Business from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. After graduating, He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army and served as an artillery officer in the First Armored Division.
Phil was a well-known businessman in Kerrville, Uvalde and San Antonio. In 1970, he opened his first business, Lumbermart, in Uvalde. His other businesses included a second Lumbermart in Kerrville, Lifestyle Homes and Lake Medina RV Resort.
Named Texas Small Businessman of the Year, Phil served on the boards of directors for Lumberman's Association of Texas, Handy Hardware and First National Bank of Uvalde. He also served on the Notre Dame Church Finance and Building committees and the Notre Dame School Board He was an active member of the ACTS Core Team.
Phil was also a member of the Kerrville and Uvalde Knights of Columbus, Rotary Club. Additionally, he served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Uvalde.
Phil is survived by his wife, Marlene Grothues; mother Agnes Grothues; sons, Greg Grothues and his wife, Gina, of Lakehills, and Brian Grothues of Austin; daughters Debbie Grothues of Kerrville; Carol Whilden and her husband, Robert, of Houston; and Laura Stewart and her husband, Ed, of Silver Spring, Maryland; brother Mark Grothues and his wife, Carmen; sisters, Elaine Sachey and her husband, Tom, and Susan Simmons; and grandchildren, Kristen and Cole Grothues, Kendon and Kirkland Connally and Ally and Lindsey Whilden, as well as by nieces and nephews.
Phil was predeceased by his father, Phil A. Grothues.
A Mass of the Resurrection was held Tuesday, June 5, at Notre Dame Catholic Church, officiated by Monsignor Michael Boulette. Burial followed at the Garden of Memories cemetery in Kerrville.
Pallbearers included Rothe Cox, Gene VanDeWalle, Charlie Downs, Mark Stone, Andy Mein and Tom Sachey.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Notre Dame Catholic School, 927 Main Street, Kerrville 78028 or to Medina Lake Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Lake Medina RV Resort, 1218 Leibold's Pt., Lakehills 78063.

Darrell Hogan
1926-2016
Darrell Hogan, 89, of Bandera, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 6.
He was born in San Antonio on July 2, 1926, to Ed and Lillian Hogan. A third-generation Texan, Darrel’s great-great-grandfather, Andrew Hogan, immigrated to Texas from Ireland in 1842.
As a young boy during the Great Depression, Darrell worked as a paperboy for the San Antonio Light newspaper to help the family.
He graduated from Hot Wells High School and lettered two years in football at Baylor University before transferring to Trinity University, where he served as team captain for two years. Darrel also received All Lone Star Conference and Little All America honors.
As the first Trinity Tiger to play for the National Football League, he was inducted into the Trinity University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
Darrell played professional football for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1949 to 1953. In his 60 games as a linebacker, he missed only one down of football due to a slight injury.
Darrell intercepted seven passes, returning one 61 yards for a touchdown. He was named to the Steelers All Time team for the first 40 years of football.
Until his last few years, Darrell remained active in the Former NFL Players Association, where he attended football games at University of Texas San Antonio, signing autographs with other former NFL players.
He coached football and track and field at high schools in Texas, and served as head coach at high schools in Eagle Pass, Premont and Donna, as well as East Central and Southwest high schools in the San Antonio area. Darrell was one of the coaches of the 1964 State Track and Field Champions in Kermit.
An avid fan of all things western, he watched Gunsmoke every day with his dogs, Little Bit and Blue.
Darrell is survived by former spouse, Betty Wrigley Hogan; children, Anne Hardin, Pat Hogan and Chele and Susan McKinney; sister, Joy Payne; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, Mike; brother Ed; and his parents.
The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to caregivers Chris Greene and Harlin Richardson; Alamo Hospice, especially Kathy Dunaway; and Pastor Larry McRorey of the Bandera United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, April 16, at the First United Methodist Church in Bandera with fellowship to follow in the parish hall. As Darrell wished to be cremated – or “burned,” as he put it – there will be no burial.
Leon Francis Salzman
1931-2015
Leon Francis Salzman, 84, passed on to his eternal home on Tuesday, Dec. 29.
The youngest son of nine children, he was born at the family farm near LaCoste on July 4, 1931.
Leon graduated from LaCoste High School in 1949. After his marriage, he served in the United States Army for six years. Leon also worked at City Public Service Electric Company in San Antonio for over 31 years.
Leon and his wife, Charlotte, were married
for 61 years.
Leon is survived by his sister, Marlene Schott and her husband, Randy; and wife Charlotte and the couple's children, Leon Wayne Salzman and his wife, Karla; Debbie Trimble; Henry Salzman and his wife, Jan; and Charla Ritchie and her husband, Wade. Other survivors include 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Leon was predeceased by his parents, brothers, a sister and a grandson.
A prayer service was held Saturday, Jan. 2, at Grimes Chapel in Bandera with interment following at Pipe Creek cemetery.
Ray Jackson Winn
1930-2015
Ray Jackson Winn, 85, of Bandera, passed away Monday, Dec. 28, in San Antonio.
He was born in Lubbock on May 9, 1930 to Francis and Gould Winn. Ray married
Margaret Winn on March 20, 2001 in Bandera.
He had a distinguished military career of 23 years, serving first in the United States Marine Corps and then the US Air Force. A proud veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Ray was awarded the Purple Heart and 12 Air Medals in addition to numerous other awards and decorations. He also participated actively in Gypsy MC International for many years.
Ray is survived by wife Margaret Winn and her children, John Neubauer, Christine Neubauer and Lisa Longridge; and his son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Beverly Aldridge, and their children, Kimberly Aldridge, Becky Aldridge and Jon Frazier, as well as by numerous other relatives and friends.
Ray was predeceased by wife Elsie Florence Winn and his brother, Max Winn.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 pm, Friday, Jan. 8, at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm that same day, also at Grimes Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Rick Pfaff of Messiah Lutheran Church, in Boerne, officiating.
Burial with full military honors will take place at Fort Sam Houston National cemetery at 11 am, Tuesday, Jan. 12.
