WILLIAM V. "BILL" HAYES
William V. "Bill" Hayes, age 75 of Bandera, died Thursday, June 3 in a San Antonio hospital. He was born March 23, 1929 in Del Rio to William Henry Hayes and Florence Bochat Hayes. Bill graduated from high school in Del Rio and attended Texas A&M; University for two years before joining the Navy during the Korean War. After leaving the Navy in 1952, he worked for Dow Chemical Company for 30 years, authored or co-authored about 33 patents on catalysts, processes, and analytical methods both U.S. and foreign. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Houston while working for Dow Chemical. He managed and trained teams in Little League, Babe Ruth League, and girls/women's softball. His teams won three Texas State Championships in girls fast pitch softball. He too teams to Nationals in Binghampton, NY two times and in Memphis, TN. In 1984, he retired to start Hayes Separations, Inc., in Bandera, Manufacturing instruments, air clean-up, and water clean-up (one patent). His company also developed polymer for use as artificial bone material (two patents) He also started Environmental Fuel Services Inc., for monitoring underground tank leaks (patent pending). He was past president of Bandera Optimist and member of Over 55 Golf Club.
Survivors include his wife, Ann of Bandera; mother of his children, Encarnacion Hayes of Lake Jackson; daughters, Cynthia White and husband, David of Lake Jackson, Sharon Vincent and husband, Michael of Churchill, TX; step-daughters, Trish Jones of Pearland and Karen Turner and husband, Al of Pearland; sons, William A. "Bill" Hayes and wife, Julie of Pearland, Thomas Hayes and wife, Danna of Lake Jackson, Harry Hayes and wife, Jill of Dripping Springs, Douglas Hayes and wife, Debbie of Bandera; step-son, Ron Carlson of Bandera; sister, Robbie Moore of Ft. Worth, and 17 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, June Hayes Menard and brother, George Langton.
Services will be Saturday, June 5 at 10 a.m., Grimes Chapel in Bandera with Rev. B.A. Levine officiating. Interment will follow in the Bandera cemetery.

Inez S. Barton Monsees
Mrs. Inez S. Barton Monsees, Age 91, of Utopia, Texas, died on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at her residence. Graveside services were Tuesday, June 15 at Rosehill cemetery in Corpus Christi. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Bandera.

Leonard Aaron Hicks
Leonard Aaron Hicks of Utopia died Aug. 20 at his residence at the age of 86. He was born Jan. 25, 1918 in Utopia. He married
Bererly Frances Bailey in Bandera on June 22, 1954. Survivors include: daughters, Diane Clifton and husband David of Buda, and Jill Stewart and husband Mark of Bella Vista, Ark.; grandchildren Justin Lewis and Jackie, Kathy and Daniel Stewart; and great-grandchild Dusty Lewis, Jr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Frances Bailey, who died July 17, 1999; sister, Ruby Faye Turner; and grandson, Dusty Lewis, Sr.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Utopia Baptist Church.
The funeral was Aug. 24 at the Utopia Baptist Church. Interment followed at the Jones cemetery. Services were officiated by Rev. Ron Langley and Rev. John Sherman. Pallbearers were David Clifton, Justin Lewis, David Rainey, Reagan Mazurek, David Mazurek and Skip Doerr. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Mazurek, Leslie Mazurek, Erick Boultinghouse and Mark Stewart.
Arrangements were by Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary of Uvalde.
Thoro Lee "Crickett" Amberson
Thoro Lee "Crickett" Amberson, 68, of Hondo, passed away July 12, 2004. Crickett was born Dec. 26, 1935 to Othro O. and Ona Mae Adams in Medina.
For many years, she taught and directed the Medina Association for Exceptional Citizens Workshop in Hondo.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Onella Chesson.
Crickett is survived by her husband, James Earl "Jim" Amberson; son, James O. Amberson, of Hondo; daughters Robyn A. Decker and husband Kirk, of Hondo and Lynda A. Clarke and husband Patrick, of Natalia; five grandchildren; step-daughters Annabelle Amberson Estep, of Waco and Mary Jane Burnett, of Jefferson; two step-grandchildren; sister Jo Russell; sister-in-law Evelyn Brucks and husband George, of Hondo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were July 15, at the First United Methodist Church of Hondo. Interment was in Hondo cemetery, Oakwood Section. Arrangements were by Guinn-Horger Funeral Home in Hondo.
Thomas Elisha Logue
Thomas Elisha Logue, 69, died on July 15, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Cascade, Idaho on May 4, 1935, to Cecil and Rachel Crawford Logue. As a teen, he worked with his dad as a lumberjack. He spent several years working for Boeing Aircraft Company, a job that he loved because it was challenging and rewarding. He spent 19 years working at an alfalfa seed production company in Lovelock, Nevada before moving to Bandera County in 1990.
After moving to Lakehills, Logue worked for Reddout Construction in Helotes until his first cancer operation in October of 1995. Deteriorating health forced him into retirement. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church in Lakehills and worked on church building projects until a Sept. 3, 2003 stroke partially paralyzed his right side.
Logue and Stephanie Parker married
in 1988 in Lovelock, Nev. She survives.
Logue was preceded in death by his father Cecil Logue, his mother Rachel Logue, one sister Miriam Logue, two brothers Adrian Logue and George Alexander Logue and one son Tommy Edward Logue.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include stepson Luke Parker, of Havelock, N.C., his wife Delight and their daughter Dulcinea; sons David and Jeffrey Humpherys, of Washington and Oregon; sisters Reba McMillan, of Nampa, Idaho and Christina Gentry, of Emmett, Idaho; Timothy Logue, of Weiser, Idaho and numerous nieces and nephews, including Chalet and Christopher Earl of Nampa.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 24 at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund for Faith Tabernacle Church in Lakehills or VistaCare Hospice, in Kerrville.
J. D. Starnes, Jr.
Joel Dow Starnes, Jr. "J.D." passed away on Saturday, Aug. 7 due to an untimely traffic accident.
J. D. was born in Rankin, Texas on July 28, 1936 to Joel D. Starnes, Sr. and Edith Harris Starnes. He attended school in Rankin until his family moved to Fort Worth in 1946. Five years later they moved to Midland where J.D. graduated from Midland High School. He proudly served his country while stationed in Germany in the U.S. Army. J.D. then went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, and obtained a law degree at the South Texas School of Law in Houston.
J.D. returned to Midland in 1969 and worked with his father at Permian Abstract Company until his father's death in 1971, when J.D. assumed control. He acquired many title companies throughout his life in numerous counties in Texas including Medina, Gillespie, Bandera, Kinney & Howard. J.D. sold Permian Abstract in 2002 and focused his energies on West Texas Abstract in Big Spring.
Dow (as all his family called him) enjoyed playing golf, attending Midland High baseball games and drinking coffee with his buddies. One of his personal goals was obtaining his private pilots license and he loved being able to fly to his various businesses around the state and to his retreat at Leakey.
Dow most enjoyed spending time with his family and he was proudest of his two wonderful children and their accomplishments in their education, careers and families.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his big sister, Joanne Starnes Langston.
Dow is survived by his son, Dr. Joel D. Starnes, III, wife Janelle and their children Drake and Mitchell of Lubbock, TX; daughter Stephanie Corwin, husband Steve, and their daughter, Katelyn, of McKinney, TX; sister Jean Starnes of Midland and brother, Jon Harris Starnes and wife Terry of Austin. He also leaves eight nieces and nephews and ten grand-nieces/nephews.
Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12 at Ellis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas. Call 432-683-5555.
