Christa Ann Wanda Elliott
1931-2016
Christa Ann Wanda Prochnow Elliott, 85, died Thursday, August 25.
She was born on March 6, 1931, in Stettin, Germany β formerly Prussia β to Willi Prochnow and Lisbeth Djivelsdorff Prochnow.
In 1958, she married
Glenn Elliott, who was serving with the United States Army in Germany. Elliott, a native of Zavalla, Texas, retired from the Army in 1966 with 21 years and eight months of military service during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He died in 1981.
Christa came to the United States in the early 1960s and became a US citizen. The couple settled in the San Antonio area, but moved to Mico on the Medina Lake in 1972 where they lived for many years.
Christa eventually moved to Lakehills Homestead RV Park where she lived for the remainder of her life.
A loving mother, Christa always cared deeply for her family members. She made many friends while traveling around Texas and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Christa is survived by daughters, Elizabeth A. Wood and Doris J. Gillis; and son John M. Elliott, as well as by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins and other family members in Germany.
She was predeceased by her husband and son Peter AU Bornkessel.
Memorial services will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Western Heritage Cowboy Church, 146 FM 1283. Burial services are pending at the Fort Sam Houston National cemetery.
Nancy Akin Bailey
1938-2016
Nancy Akin Bailey, 77, died Wednesday, August 31, at her home in Belton.
She was born in Port Arthur, Oct. 3, 1938, the daughter of Charles Shelton “Shel” Akin and Adell Davis Akin.
Nancy attended Bandera schools all 12 years, graduating with honors from Bandera High School in 1957. After joining the Bandera High School Band while in sixth grade, She served as a band majorette during her high school career.
Nancy’s ancestors – early settlers of Bandera County – included the Akins, Davises and Mayfields.
She received a teaching degree from Sam Houston State University.
An accomplished musician on the piano and saxophone, Nancy taught piano for over 25 years. She also played in churches across the State of Texas and was a member of the Belton Church of Christ.
Nancy married
Henry Virgle “HV” O’Bryant in Bandera, on March 17, 1957. She married
Duryl “Gibby” Bailey in Mexia, on July 14, 1987.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Gibby; sons, Chuck O’Bryant and Randy O’Bryant and his wife, Kathy; and daughter Nanell O’Bryant Neal and her husband, Scott, as well as by her children by marriage, Keith Middleton Bailey and his wife, Sissy; Boyce Craig Bailey and his wife, Mary; and Doak Herring Bailey and his wife, Amy.
She was blessed to be granted 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and other family and friends too numerous to count.
Nancy was predeceased by her sister, Janelle Ruth Akin Nesting, and daughter-in-law Tanya O’Bryant.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Dossman Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Scott Neal officiating. Burial followed at the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Nolanville.
Memorials may be made in Nancy’s name to the Medina Children’s Home.
Stella Juanita Monroe
1918-2015
Stella Juanita Monroe, 97, passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, at her residence in Bandera.
She was born in Jasper, Georgia, on Nov. 9, 1918, to Grover Charles and Pearl Magnolia Pettett.
Juanita married
Robert Dale Monroe on Dec. 4, 1953, in Seguin, which became the start of one of the true great love stories of all time.
Juanita was known and loved for her hobbies. She took up various forms of art, starting with oil painting then expanding her talents to acrylics and sculpture. She eventually found her way into the world of porcelain art, where she really flourished.
An avid student of the art, Juanita soon became a master. For many years, she presented seminars to local porcelain art clubs in San Antonio and the Hill Country and also at state and national conventions. Even at the age of 97, Juanita still spent most days in her painting room, creating wondrous porcelain paintings.
She is survived by her daughters, Charline Roberson of San Antonio; Sharon Lucart and Shirley Hughes, both of Roswell, New Mexico; and Normandy Monroe of Arlington, Texas; sons, Robert G. Monroe of Nacogdoches and Johnny Monroe of Guthrie, Oklahoma; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Juanita was predeceased by her husband, Robert D. Monroe; parents; sister Jeffie Lee Pettett Lindsey; and brothers, Owen Pettett and Jack Pettett.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 14 at Twin Lakes Baptist Church with Bro. Alan Otten officiating. Interment followed at Bandera cemetery.
James Robert Scott
1925-2016
Rev. James Robert “Bob” Scott, 90, formerly of Tarpley, died Friday, Sept. 9, after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 31, 1925, in Arkansas, and became a United Methodist pastor.
Known as “Bob-Bob” to his great-grandchildren, he was loved by several generations of children who grew up in the Bandera United Methodist Church, as well as by children in the many other churches he served.
After graduating from Yale Divinity School, Bob began his ministry in 1948. He pastored churches in the Little Rock, Arkansas area during the 1950s and 1960s – when school desegregation and civil rights were at the forefront of American life.
Before retiring in 1991, Bob also served churches that included Bearden, Primrose, Texarkana, Magnolia, Pine Bluff, Arkadelphia and Crossett.
In 1989 he married
Rena. The couple moved to Arkansas until Bob’s retirement after which they relocated to Tarpley where they lived until Rena’s death in 2014.
Both before and after his retirement, Bob took an active part in ministry and service through national and international church boards and committees.
As a part of the World Methodist Council, Bob and Rena traveled to Rio de Janiero and Brighton, England. Their travels also included many mission trips to Russia, Africa, China, Athens, Buenos Aires, Rome, Ephesus, Turkey, Iguassu Falls, Jordan River, Kenya, Old Jerusalem, Pisa and other sites throughout the world.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Dr. Janis Robin Scott; sisters, Charlotte Turner, Mary Sue Taylor and Beth Turner and her husband, Henry; stepchildren, Rob Sandidge and his wife, Roxy; Dan Sandidge and his wife, Ella; Janna Sandidge Hawes and Leslie; and George Sandidge III and his wife, Barbara; step-grandchildren, Tobey and Sharon Sandidge, Manny and Jennifer Sandidge, Matt and Angela Sandidge, Carrie Sandidge Ervin and Neal, and Shauna Sandidge Davis and John; and step-great-grandchildren, Calvin, Nolan, Luke, Levi, Layne, Logan, Delaney, Lila, Peyton, Paxton, Frank and Andrew, as well as by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his second wife, Rena Sandidge Scott; his first wife, Helen Sullivent Scott; parents, Rev. Manuel and Estelle Scott; sister Martha Price; and brothers-in-law, Maury Barnes, JR Taylor and Ed Turner.
Mark B D’Spain
1963-2016
Mark B D’Spain was born to Patsy and Carel D’Spain on October 24, 1963 in Kerrville, Texas. On September 19, 2016 he went to be with the Lord,
Mark grew up in Bandera and attended all twelve years in the Bandera Schools. He very capably worked at a variety of jobs, but later in his life he enjoyed working in the health care industry. He was a friend to the young and elderly and saw good in everyone.
Being an avid sports fan, he took a sincere interest in the Bandera Bulldogs, Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M; Aggies and the San Antonio Spurs. He always considered himself a Bandera Bulldog.
The American Indians fascinated Mark. Their way of life and their ability to survive by living off the land amazed him. He enjoyed reading about them and collecting arrow points and artifacts. The outdoors often led him to a favorite fishing hole or a comfortable hunting blind.
Mark was a wonderful father to his children, Samantha and Marcus. They were his world and the light of his life. He was always proud of his children. Whether they came in first or last in the game, he celebrated a victory. He always found the good in everything or at least would explain a lesson learned in something wrong.
Mark is survived by his wife, Cynthia; his daughter, Samantha; his son, Marcus; his mother. Patsy D’Spain; his sister, Michele Quarles and husband, Kevin; his nieces Amanda D’Spain, Kara Feasel and husband, Daniel; his nephew Robert D’Spain; his mother and father in-law, Tina and Oscar Valdez; his sister in-law, Kristina Rodriguez; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Carel D’Spain and his brother Michael.
