Nestor S. Chavez
1948-2016
Nestor S. Chavez, 68, of San Antonio and Pipe Creek, passed away Friday, April 29, in San Antonio after a long battle with cancer.
He was born in San Antonio on Feb. 26, 1948, to Margarito B. Chavez and Dominga Senac.
Nestor married
Janet Blackmon in Bexar County in 1982. He grew up and attended school on the south side of San Antonio, graduating from community college with two degrees.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, serving from 1966-1969, Nestor worked for the Audie Murphy VA Hospital for more than 20 years, transporting veterans.
He is survived by his mother, Dominga; children, Nestor and Andrea; sister Margie; brothers, Frank and David; grandson Camrin Jinx; and many other family members.
Nestor was predeceased by his wife, Janet; father Margarito; and brother John Chavez.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, May 4, at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera with Eric D. Carter officiating. Burial followed at Pipe Creek cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to VITAS Hospice; 8109 Fredericksburg Road, Third Floor; San Antonio 78229.
Suzanne "Suzi" Meyer-Hoffmann
1954-2016
Suzanne “Suzi” Meyer-Hoffmann, 62, was called to be with our Lord on Tuesday, April 26, after a long battle with cancer.
She dedicated her life to helping, teaching and coaching special needs children and adults. Suzi was a Special Olympics coach for Area XX for 38 years and an instructional assistant for 37 years at for Northside Independent School District.
Certified in bowling, basketball and track & field, she was selected as the 1999 Northside Coach of the Year. In 2009, she received another award for her dedication to Special Olympics.
For Suzi, Boy Scouts became an added adventure. She served as assistant Scout Master for Troop 378, along with Jo and Lee Roy McGraw. She helped her students earn merit badges and had the first handicapped Eagle Scouts in the State of Texas. Suzi also received two awards for her dedication to scouting – the District Award of Merit and the Phoenix Summer Camp Award.
In 1972, Suzi graduated from Ursuline Academy with a music scholarship to Our Lady of the Lake University, majoring in music and special education. She was also a member of Kappa Sigma Phi Sorority. She also attended SAC where she earned a certificate in sign language.
Additionally, Suzi donated her hair to kids who lost their hair due to cancer treatment. She was always helping a kid.
Suzi is survived by her loving husband of 13 years and caregiver, Dennis A Hoffmann, and adopted son Frankie Wiggins; grandchildren, Sharon and Bret and daughter Shannon Munson and family; mother Edith Grothues Meyer; and brothers, David Verstuyft, wife Laura and family; and Michael Verstuyft, wife Sharon and family, along with numerous cousins. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Celestine Hoffmann; brothers-in-law, Charles and Thomas.
Suzi also had a large extended family which included her mama and papa, Fred and Gladys Greene and family, Yvonne, Theresa, Mark and Greg; sister and caregiver Sandra Miles-Wolfe, husband Roger and nephews, Shawn Andrews, wife Theresa; Jason Andrews, wife Ayla, son Tyler; Jaye & Randy Allee and family.
Suzi was predeceased by her father, Robert J. Meyer, and father-in-law, Dennis Hoffmann.
Many thanks go out to the doctors, nurses and staff who cared for, loved and treated Suzi during the past six years, at The Cancer Care Center, Iterium Hospice and Methodist Hospital.
Thank you to Rev. Gerry Haby for being with us during this journey along with Rev. Bernard Kayimbow, Rev. Jim Fischer and Rev. Larry Steubben, as well as to St. Francis Chapel in Mico for all their love and continued support.
Thanks go out to Suzi’s hospice team, Mr. Dexter, Myra, Kaycee and Ms. Lisa. This team was dedicated and so helpful to us during a difficult time.
We will miss Suzi’s laughter, smile and sense of humor. We lift our sister up to you, Father God.
A viewing, rosary and funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 623 East Commerce St. at 8 am, Saturday, May 7. Parking validated in back of church. Internment will follow at St. Joseph’s Society cemetery on the corner of Montana and Pine Street.

Kenneth R. Miner
1937-2016
Kenneth R. Miner, 78, passed away Sunday, May 1, at his home in Bandera.
He was born in Newark, Ohio, on Sept. 22, 1937, to Carl Eugene and Ethel Mae Miner. Ken married
Bette Lindsley on April 2, 1956, in Northwood, Iowa.
A veteran of the Vietnam War in the United States Air Force, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the National Defense Service medal, two Silver Stars and 10 Bronze Stars. Ken was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars since 1993, and the Disabled American Veterans since 1998.
He is survived by his wife, Bette; son Kevin and his wife, Angel, and daughter Kim and her fiancé, Lewis, all of Kansas; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Sue Headley of Florida and Sandy Rees of Ohio; and brother, Mike Miner of Ohio.
Ken will also be greatly missed by his dear friends, Dana Simmons, Diane Clark and Tina Kopecki.
Ken was predeceased by his parents and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at a later date at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
Memorials in Ken’s name may be given to Gentiva Hospice, Audie Murphy VA Hospital or Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Department.
Betty M. Ramsay
1919-2016
Betty M. Ramsay, 96, passed away Sunday, May 1, in Sarasota, Florida.
She was born Dec. 30, 1919.
Mrs. Ramsay was married
52 years to Eugene S. Ramsay until his death in 1996, and for three years to Jesse Pine Sr. of Concord, North Carolina, until his death in 2001.
She is survived by her son Wayne Ramsay of Bandera.
Services will be held at Grimes Funeral Chapels of Bandera at a later date.
Sammy Moore
1954-2016
Sammy “Sam” Moore, 62, passed away of lymphoma on Wednesday, May 4, in Kerrville.
He was born on Jan. 1, 1954, in Madisonville, and grew up in the Pecan Park section of Houston prior to settling in Pasadena.
A journeyman pipefitter, Sam worked a number of years at Boccard on Galveston Road before retiring to the Hill Country. He was an honest hard-working man and an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt.
Sam loved his family – especially his wife, kids and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene Moore; mother Helen Karber-Orlando; sisters, Deborah and Donna; daughters, Christina and Courtney; stepson George; four grandchildren Katy, Chance, Emmit and Cassidy; and great-grandchild Skyley.
Services are pending. The family is grateful for the condolences and prayers.
