Nancy Marley Newhouse
1942-2016
Nancy Marley “Nannan” Newhouse, 73 of Bandera, threaded her last needle and was welcomed into Heaven on Tuesday, March 1, after a courageous battle with lengthy illness. Surrounded by her family, she was led to Heaven’s Gate and wrapped in the Lord’s quilt.
Nancy was born April 24, 1942, in Concord, Tennessee, the youngest child of Meadie M. and Charles Marley. The apple of her daddy’s eye, she grew up on a dairy farm. Nancy attended Bluegrass Grammar School, graduating from Farragut High School in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1960. She lived with and cared for her parents until 1971.
Nancy married
the love of her life, Roy E. Newhouse, in November 1972. The couple was married
for four glorious years before Roy passed away.
In 1978, Nancy moved from Tennessee to Bandera, where she continued her career as a dental assistant. She later sold medical supplies in San Antonio and surrounding areas. Nancy was a former member of the Bandera Quilt Guild, the Pipe Creek Presbyterian Little Rock Church and a loyal University of Tennessee Volunteers fan. She and Roy attended many football games and even bowl games in Hawaii wearing the bright orange Vol colors. Watching Jeopardy, playing bingo and the occasional casino were some Nancy’s other favorite pastimes.
Although she had no children of her own, Nancy was always surrounded by kids. She was given the nickname “Nannan” and it stuck.
If you grew up in Bandera in the ‘90s, I am sure you spent time at Nannan’s house, which served as an after-school gathering place for many kids. She always had iced tea and snacks waiting.
Nannan was also an avid and talented quilter, hand-making countless items for family and friends. She also became the “go-to” house-sitter for many people in the Bandera area – and other states.
Every place that she house-sat had some type of pet, mainly dogs. Nannan enjoyed watching the dogs and everyone was grateful because they knew she would ensure their pets were loved and safe.
Nannan spent a lot of time in Pipe Creek with her Texas family where she enjoyed walking along the creek and searching for fossils at Hop and Reet’s ranch.
A giving person with a huge heart, Nannan loved Christ and was devoted to her faith in the Lord. She had wonderful friends as well as loving neighbors who watched over her. She enjoyed holidays, sunsets, shopping, a good bargain and sitting outside in a swing or rocking chair. A talented baker, Nannan would make edible gifts for family and friends – especially at Christmas time. And, one thing we all knew about Nannan, she loved her coffee – day or night.
She will be forever missed by her niece, Sandra Glover, and nephew Richard Duisen and his wife, Kelly, both of Tennessee, as well as many other family members. She also left behind her “Texas family,” Reet Campbell, her best friend and honorary sister; and honorary godchildren, Jake Campbell and his daughter, Charlsie; Lucy and Juan Gonzales and their children, Harvey and Hazel; Sara Campbell and Paul Lamascus and their catahoulas; and wonderful friends, Frank and Sharon Srednicki, and Frank’s son, Scott, from North Carolina, as well as many treasured neighbors and meaningful friends in Bandera and throughout the Hill Country.
Nannan was greeted in Heaven by her mother and father, husband Roy E. Newhouse, sister Pat Duisen, niece Dottie Hobbs and honorary brother and great friend Hop Campbell.
A celebration of life to honor and remember Nancy will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, April 9, at the Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall.
Nancy requested that memorials be made to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bandera County, 715 Maple Street, Bandera 78003 or the Pipe Creek Presbyterian Little Rock Church, PO Box 63377, Pipe Creek 78063.
“Quilters affect eternity; they can never tell where their influence stops.”
