Marijeanne Fenno Cunningham
Marijeanne died October 26, 1998, from a severe asthma attack which resulted in a coma. She was living in De Funiak Springs, Florida. She was 53 years old and was born in Seymour, Texas. However, from 1956 on she considered her home in Bellingham, Washington.
She always had the philosophy that to be challenged by new goals governed her quests. As an example when she was a freshman in high school she decided that she wanted to learn Scottish dancing and six months later she won first place in the sword dance competition held in San Diego for Highland games competition of Southern California. Her parents, Dale and Virginia Fenno, moved to Connecticut after her graduation from San Diego High School in 1963 where she entered Connecticut College for Women, primarily because it was across the street from the Coast Guard Academy. Her father was transferred to Norfolk, Virginia, where she attended Old Dominion University. The family returned to Bellingham where she attended Western Washington University to receive her Bachelor and Masters Degrees and was one of the first females to receive a Masters Degree in Industrial Arts in the state of Washington. Marijeanne taught five years in Arlington and Bellingham, Washington. She became challenged and began setting new goals to explore in other fields, some being computer training, newspaper setup for the Herald and Friday Harbor Journal, magazine illustrator, textbook designer for the Department of Education of Alaska, business manager in New Orleans, computer designer, Captain of a tourist boat in Guam, marrying Japanese couples while in Guam, among other quests, the most recently being a part of the University of Florida.
Marijeanne and her surviving husband, Gene Cunningham, purchased a 42 foot sailboat and lived aboard it in Bellingham, Friday Harbor and Juneau. From Juneau, Alaska, they made a trip down the Pacific Coast as far as Newport, California. At this time they decided to trade boating for traveling in a motor home. Opportunities opened up in Guam for them, and they spent three years working there. They returned to the states in February of 1998. Their travels took them to De Funiak Springs, Florida.
Marijeanne has always been very active in the Episcopal Churches where she lived. In fact, she had been studying theology with the goal of a four year degree. Another goal she had was prompted by the activities of the church. She wanted to sing well enough to sing solos at church; so she took some singing lessons in Bellingham and became very active in the choirs in Bellingham, Friday Harbor, Guam and De Funiak Springs.
She is survived by Gene; two stepchildren, Stacy and Jason of Alaska; her parents, Dale and Virginia Fenno of Friday Harbor, Washington; an uncle, Vane Cherry, of Waco, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law Bob and Elizabeth Cunnningham of Bellingham; and numerous cousins, great-aunts and great-uncles. She was proceeded in death by her fraternal grandparents, Richard and Minnie Fenno of Bellingham and her maternal grandparents, Vane and Lyda Cherry of Seymour, Texas.
At Marijeanne's request she will be cremated and her remains will be interred at St. John's Episcopal Church on Guam in an honorary place.
Memorials may be made to the Asthma Foundation or Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital.
