Vera Valley Studer
Vera was born July 2, 1912, to Lola and Henry E. Lewis and departed this life on June 2, 2001, having lived a very active and rewarding life.
Services were held Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Seymour with A.B. Martin officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, Seymour, Texas under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Vera came to Baylor County with her family when she was 3 years old, making the journey in a covered wagon from Ballinger, Texas. Following her father’s death her mother married Tim Wall.
A resourceful child, Vera once made a bridle for the family dog, “Old Shep” and rode him approximately two miles to school. On another occassion she and her cousin, Cora, assigned to wash and dry the dinner dishes, had other plans: they put the dishes in the floor and invited the dogs to come lick them clean.
As a young girl she chose to work in the fields with Daddy Wall rather than doing household chores. On June 2, 1928, she and Clarence Studer were married as they were sitting in a car with Bro. Garner reading the vows as he stood by the car window.
They settled in the Ogden Community for several years, then they moved to the Carter-Taylor Ranch. There they broke and gentled horses. It is said she was very much a “cowgirl” and could outride any man when it came to riding broncs. She also learned to ride horses “Roman Style”.
During all this time she began birthing and raising her six children. The next adventure for Vera was becoming a farm wife and a farm hand.
In 1950, she began her “waitress career” which she enjoyed for some 35 years. Then in 1985, she became a part-time city employee as a school crossing guard until she became too ill to continue her job in 1999.
During this time she would sit up with housebound or hospitalized patients. She often referred to the “old people” she sat with.... many of whom were 10 to 15 years younger than she was.
Part of the farm life she enjoyed was the travel through the northern states on harvest. While working for Homer Connell she cooked for some 20 men and her family. In the 1950’s they went all the way to Canada with the harvest.
Her beloved companions in later years were Tiny and Little Bit, two toy poodles.
As a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Seymour, Texas she was active in helping others in time of need and could always be counted on to supply food and kept a supply of ice ready when needed.
Vera was preceeded in death by her husband, Clarence Studer; one child, Henry T. Studer; her parents, three sisters: Ruby, Lydia and Johnnie; two brothers: J.T. & Dee.
Survivors include: 3 daughters: Gay McAfee, Linda Douglas and Mona Hayes; 3 sons: Jim, Ralph and Tracy Studer; 1 sister: Totsie Cade; 24 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
