Ida Mae Vaden
Ida Mae Vaden, Seymour native, and Knox City resident since September 7, 1986, where she resided in the Brazos Valley Care Home, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001.
A memorial service was held Saturday, April 7, at the First Baptist Church in Seymour. Johnny Johnson, pastor, of the First Baptist Church in Knox City, Texas, officiated assisted by Ronnie White, of Knox City. Interment was in the Woodmen of the World Cemetery in Seymour, Texas, under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.
Ida Mae Thorn was born on July 18, 1915, in Baylor County. Having lost both of her parents as a child, her older brother and sister kept their three siblings together until they were grown. Mrs. Vaden graduated from Seymour High School. Ida Mae and Clarence Edward Vaden were married on July 30, 1932, in Seymour. Mr. Vaden preceded his wife in death on January 6, 1970. Mr. and Mrs. Vaden owned the Star Bakery in Seymour. After his illness, the bakery was sold and Mrs. Vaden worked at the hospital and later as Interim Administrator at the care home. She also worked at the Russell Newman Factory and was an H & R Block tax preparer until her health declined and she was forced to close her business. Ida was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Seymour and served in the nursery for many years. She was a member of the Northeast Baptist Church at the time of her death. Her love of children was utmost in her life.
Survivors include four daughters, Elaine Lewis and Nancy Davis, both of Knox City, Texas, Neva Elliott of Vernon, Texas, and Patsy Cassle of Sargent, Texas; three sons, Edward Earl Vaden of Wichita Falls, Texas, Carl Wayne Vaden of Seymour, Texas, and Jimmy Van Vaden of Knox City, Texas; 18 grandsons, Danny Lewis, Todd Lewis, Marty Vaden, Randy Elliott, Larry Elliott, Eddie Cassle, Jackie Vaden, Charlie Vaden, Jody Hudson, Troy Lewis, Shane Lewis, David Scott, James Elliott, Zachary Cassle, Darrell Cassle, Van Vaden, Donald Joe Hudson, Jay Hudson; eight granddaughters, Patricia Deering, Leann Long, Cindy (Vaden) Gordon, Lajuana Montez, Phyllis McWhorter, Gayle Murphy, Kristi Caldwell, Misty Davis; 57 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her first grandchild in 1974, Bobby Lynn Lewis, age 21; two brothers, John and Joe Thorn, and two sisters, Mrytle and Rosa Lee Thorn.
Virgil Jackson Drew, Jr.
Memorial services for Virgil Jackson Drew, Jr., 77, of Lubbock were held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2001, at Bowman Chapel in the First United Methodist Church in Lubbock, with Reverend Bruce Parks, officiating and Reverend Marisue Smith, assisting. Burial was in Resthaven Memorial Park at 3:00 p.m., under the direction of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.
He passed away Friday, April 6, 2001, at his residence in Lubbock.
Mr. Drew was born February 23, 1924, in Clarendon, Texas, to the late Virgil Jackson Drew and Oma Griggs Drew. He attended grammar school in Oklahoma. He graduated from Seymour High School in 1941 and then attended the University of Oklahoma. He married Jonnie Dabney on October 26, 1947, in Seymour, Texas. He moved to Lubbock from Amarillo, Texas in 1956. For seventeen years he was a salesman for R.C. Brown Co. Inc. in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. In 1983, he opened JDI & Associates, Inc. where he was owner and CEO until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of the Southwest Football Officials Association and the Southwest Conference Umpire Association. Mr. Drew was the Umpire-in-Chief at Texas Tech for Berl Huffman. He was a member of the Yellowhouse Masonic Lodge for 50 years. He served for the US Air Force in the 82nd and the 101st Airborne Troups during WWII. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lubbock.
Survivors include: his wife, Johnnie Drew of Lubbock; three sons, Virgil Jackson “Tripp” Drew, III of Colorado Springs, CO, John Otis Drew of Cypress, TX, and Jerry Cloud Drew of Dallas, TX; one daughter, Janeen Holmes Gilliam of Lubbock; one sister, DeAnn Drew Britton of Lubbock; and eight grandchildren.
The family suggest memorials be made to a favorite charity.
Charles L. Strickland
Charles L. Strickland, age 80, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Gillette, Wyoming. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at the Seymour Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Glenn Shock officiating. Interment was in the Seymour Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. Strickland was born May 29, 1920, in Seymour, Texas. He married Ruby Pauline Harris on July 14, 1939, in Baylor County, Texas. She preceded him in death on October 5, 1997. They lived in Monahams, Texas, where he owned Basin Service Electric for 38 years. They returned to Seymour in 1987. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He was a Baptist, a 50 year member of Monahams Masonic Lodge #952, and a liftime member of V.F.W. Post #4004.
He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Paula and Jerry Buie of Gillette, Wyoming; by two grandchildren, Chuck Buie of Gillette, Wyoming, and Kathy Benedict of Lawrence, Kansas; and by two great-grandchildren, Griffin Buie and Trevor Benedict.
George Alexander Ferrier
George Alexander Ferrier, 62, of Axtell, Texas passed away March 29, 2001, at his home. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Anderson Clayton Funeral Home in Mesquite, Texas. Interment was Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Ponchatoula Cemetery, Ponchatoula, Louisiana.
George was born January 3, 1939, in Austin, Texas, to LaVonia and Otho Ferrier. He attended Center High School in Kansas City, Missouri, Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri, and Kansas City Junior College. He served in the Special Services for the US Army on the Cape Fear River in Willington, North Carolina. He was employed by Kimbell Office Furniture from 1979 to 1986. He was self-employed until his retirement in 1999.
George was preceded in death by his father Otho Ferrier and brother Eddie Lile. He is survived by his wife Jennifer Disher Ferrier of Axtell, Texas; children Alex Ferrier and Lauren Ferrier both of Austin, Texas, Brenden Ferrier and Mallory Ferrier both of Axtell, Texas; mother LaVonia Poe of Seymour, Texas; sister Nancy Gill and her husband Stan; brother Donald Ferrier; and sister Linda Baught; several nieces and nephews; and many great friends.

Dorothy Ann Bishop McFall
Dorothy Ann Bishop McFall, 69, a Somervell County District Clerk, died Friday, April 20, 2001, in Bronte.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 23, 2001, at Wiley Funeral Home. Burial was in Squaw Creek Cemetery.
Dorothy McFall was born August 9, 1931, in Bertram. She served as deputy court clerk for Somervell Counties 18th and 249th District Courts and was elected court clerk for two terms from 1980 to 1988.
Survivors include: daughter, Kay Lynn Styles of Bronte; sons, James Bishop McGaughey of Havelock, N.C. and Carlyle McFall of Cleburne; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sisters, Merrilynn Devrow of Seymour and Barbara Welch of Wichita Falls; brother, Clayton Bishop of Wimberley; aunt, Evelyn Taylor of Austin and uncles, J.B. Bishop of Cary, N.C. and W.W. Taylor of Marianna, Fla.
Verna Mae Tipton
Verna Mae Tipton of Huntington Beach, California passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 in Huntington Beach.
Mrs. Tipton was a former resident of Seymour.
She is survived by two sons: David Tipton of Huntington Beach, California and Lewis M. Tipton of Prescott, Arizona; two grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Mary M. Johnson
Mary M. Johnson, 84 of Eastland and formerly of Seymour, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at an Abilene hospital. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2001 at Johnson Memorial Cemetery in Munday, Texas with Rev. Randy Gresset officiating, directed by Edwards Funeral Home.
Mrs. Johnson was born November 13, 1916 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to David W. and Nellie Mae (Rawlings) Huddleston. She married James Moody Johnson on July 24, 1932 in Chattanooga, Oklahoma. She worked with her husband as a bookkeeper for Moody Johnson John Deere Implements in Seymour for 20 years. She later worked for Houges Grovery in Seymour and at Farmers Co-op, until her retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Seymour. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, James Kelly Johnson, two brothers, and a sister.
Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Noakes and Gordon of Corpus Christi, Nell Ruth Glover and Roy of Rockhill, South Carolina, and Maribeth Ford and Bob of Eastland; a brother, D.W. Huddleston of Richmond, Texas; two sisters, Eileen Hubbard and Willie Mae Wells both of Tipton, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Ernest M. Hale
Ernest M. Hale, “Captain”, U.S. Marine Corps, Retired, passed away at his home in Westover, Texas, early Wednesday morning, May 2, 2001.
Mr. Hale was born October 2, 1911, in Westover, the fifth son of the late Will and Florence (Riley) Hale.
Mr. Hale was a lifelong resident of Baylor County where he pursued a livelihood as a farmer and rancher. When World War II began, ernest immediately enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served at first as a Sergeant and Drill Instructor in California and later accompanied a class of his recruits to the Pacific Theater as a Lieutenant with the 1st Marines, attached to the 3rd Army’s Amphibious Battalion. Mr. Hale served with distinction on Pelelieu Island in 1944, where he received the Purple Heart, and on Okinawa in 1945. He ended his tour of active duty in 1946 and remained in the Marine Corps Reserves until 1958, attaining the reserve rank of Captain.
Mr. Hale returned to Baylor County after World War II. He served locally as County Commissioner during the time that the Seymour Hospital and Baylor County Courthouse were built. He was active in V.F.W. and the Masonic Lodge No. 604 A.F. & A.M. in Seymour, Texas.
He and “Bobbie” Anna Oleta Russell were married July 24, 1939 in Lovington, New Mexico. She preceded him in death as did his siblings. He is survived by his first cousins James Riley of Sweeney, Texas, Joy Bill Riley of Amarillo and Barney Hale of Brownsville, Texas; as well as by several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Lunn Funeral Home Chapel in Olney, with relatives and friends officiating. Masonic and Military graveside services were held in the Westover Cemetery under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home.

Ernest A. Beck
Ernest A. Beck Jr., age 80, a resident of Vera, Texas, died Friday, May 4, 2001, in Lamesa, Texas.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2001, in Vera Methodist Church, Vera, Texas, with Reverend Vergil Ichtertz and the Reverend Wesley Holland officiating. Interment was in the Vera Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Archer Funeral Home, Seymour, Texas.
Mr. Beck was born November 11, 1920, in Vera, Texas. He served in the Army during World War II. He and Wilma Lee Bratcher were married December 16, 1942. Mr. Beck was a lifetime resident of Vera, Texas. He had farmed since 1946 on the Benge farmland that had been in his family for over 100 years. He was a member of the Vera Methodist Church and had served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank in Haskell for 23 years.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma of Vera, Texas; two sons, Bill Beck and wife, Iva, and Danny Beck and wife Teresa, all of Lamesa, Texas; one brother, Harold Beck and wife, Edith, of Vera, Texas; one sister-in-law, Aleitha Beck of Vera, Texas; five grandchildren, Nancy Patterson, Andy Beck, Brian Beck, Cheryl Schmidt and Kathy Beck; and five great-grandchildren, Sara, Laura and Hannah Patterson, and Caity McPherson and Brianna Beck. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Beck.
