Newell Weaver Howard, Sr.
Former Seymour resident Newell Weaver Howard, Sr., 82, died recently in a Cottonwood, Arizona nursing home. Private services were held in Arizona.
Howard was born in Montague County, Texas but moved with his family to Baylor County when he was a young child. His parents, Laura and Walter L. Howard, Sr., maintained the Seymour Park and swimming pool for many years. Weaver Howard was a 1936 graduate of Seymour High School, where he received many honors, including Most Popular Boy and Mr. SHS. He married Josephine Nichols, and they moved to Arizona, where Howard began his career with the U.S. Postal Service, managing Post Offices in Scottsdale and Flagstaff. He retired in 1974 and they moved to Avery, Texas, where they raised cattle and enjoyed years with family and friends. Due to health reasons, the Howards moved back to Arizona in 1990, settling in Cottonwood.
Weaver was fond of travel in his motor home, fishing and collecting antique clocks. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Scottsdale, AZ and the past state president of the Key-winders' Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Cornelia Longley of Wichita Falls, and a brother, W.L. Howard, Jr. of San Antonio.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Josephine Nichols Howard of Cottonwood, Arizona; a daughter, Nancy, and her husband, George G. Shoemaker of Flagstaff, Arizona; a son, Newell Weaver (Bud) Howard, Jr., and his wife, Barbara, of St. George, Utah; a brother, Auborn Howard of Gunnison, Colorado; two sisters, Leela Collier of Seymour, Texas, and Eunice Rigg of Las Vegas, Nevada; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Those who have known Weaver will miss his ready wit and mischievous spirit.
J.W. "Woody" Dodd
J.W. "Woody" Dodd, age 84, died in Wichita Falls Saturday, December 26, 1998. Funeral services were held Monday, December 28, 1998 at 2 p.m. in the Morrison Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Gary Tull of Graham, Texas officiating. Burial followed in Murray Cemetery in Young County, Texas. Arrangements were under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Mr. Dodd was born December 9, 1914 in Seymour, Texas to the late William Stanley "Buck" and Hattie "Molly" (Teague) Dodd. Mr. Dodd had worked in the oilfield in West Texas and North Dakota in his early years. He had also been associated with the Seymour, Texas Sheriff's Department. He married Addie Emaline Shifflett September 13, 1955 in Benjamin, Texas. She preceded him in death on July 17, 1997. Mr. Dodd was a retired farmer and a Baptist. Survivors include; three daughters, Nell Marler of Lovington, New Mexico, Judy Maples of Wichita Falls, Texas and Sharon Gibson of Mingus, Texas; two sons, Jerry W. Dodd of Artesia, New Mexico and Doyle Mayes of Graham, Texas; 14 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren also survive.
Serving as pallbearers were; Robby, Donny, Tim, Brent, Gary Maples, and Bern Landbarzo.
Willie Boone
WilIie Boone, 72, died Monday, December 14, 1998, in a Seymour hospital.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Glen Shock officiating. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery in Seymour under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Mrs. Boone was born December 5, 1926, in Baylor County, Texas. She was a homemaker and a lifetime resident of Seymour. She and Claude Boone were married May 2, 1944. He died March 27, 1985. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Robert of Seymour; a daughter, Charlotte Howell of Seymour; a brother, Armon Smith of Seymour; a sister, Tennie Wishart of Borger, Texas; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Louise Garner
Louise Robertson Garner, 85, died Sunday, December 20, 1998, in a Seymour hospital.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 1998 at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Shock officiating. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Mrs. Garner was born June 26, 1913, in Baylor County. She and William F. Garner were married January 21, 1933. He died October 17, 1973. She was a lifetime resident of Seymour. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. A son, Charles Lynn Garner, died February 15, 1991.
Survivors include a son, Jim Cleve of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Jerrye Wishon of Seymour; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
James 'Tooter' Goodwin
James "Tooter" Goodwin, 59, died Friday, December 11, 1998, in an Abilene, Texas, hospital.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Munday with the Rev. John Hall officiating. Burial was in Johnson Memorial Cemetery in Munday under the direction of McCauley-Smith Funeral Home.
Mr. Goodwin was born September 12, 1939, in Baylor County, Texas. He and Penny Melton were married November 24, 1979, in Holiday, Texas. He was a graduate of Munday High School and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a bricklayer and was working for Knox County Precinct Four. Mr. Goodwin was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Tenya Shippley of Wichita Falls; four sons, Mark and Cameron, both of Wichita Falls and Wayne Melton and Johnny Melton, both of Munday; his mother, Vivian Pierce of Wichita Falls; a sister, Carol Bunch of Wichita Falls; two brothers, Sonny of Megargel, Texas, and Gary of Wichita Falls; and nine grandchildren.
Don Lee Franklin
Don Lee Franklin born February 27, 1947 in Seymour, TX passed away December 10, 1998 in Dallas, TX. He is survived by his wife of 31 years Pat Franklin; 2 daughters, Missy Hammond and husband, Jon; and Crissy Young and husband, Dell; grandchildren, Ashlyn Young and Jessica Hammond; sister, Tonia Chapman of Denver, Colorado; mother, Marcena Franklin. Service was held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, December 12, 1998 at Restland Wildwood Chapel. Interment followed in Restland Memorial Park.
Ray Conrad
Ray Conrad, 73, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, formerly of Derby, Colorado, retired Architectural Cabinets master cabinetmaker, died Saturday, November 7, 1998. Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 10, at Gateway Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs.
Mr. Conrad lived in Seymour for several years where he worked as a finish carpenter.
Survivors include his wife, Alberta; sons, Michael of Albuquerque and Richard of Los Lunas, New Mexico; daughters, Sharon Goucher of Alba, Missouri, and Theresa O'Dill of Denver; stepson, Allan Schwyhart of Wichita; stepdaughters, Karen Kiddoo of Branson, Missouri; and Renee Vandergrift of Wichita; brothers, Jack of Derby and Elwood Jr. of Edgerwood, New Mexico; sisters, Helen Baxter of Derby, Darlene Brown of Mound Valley, Arlene Johnson of Yucaipa, California, and Paula Corvin of Stanley, New Mexico; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Valerie McLamore Tevis
Valerie McLamore Tevis died on Tuesday, December 1, 1998 at McAllen Medical Center. She was born September 9, 1909 in Round Timbers, TX, Baylor County, to Dr. and Mrs. Julian T. McLamore. Her father was in the second graduating class of the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston. Her maternal grandfather, John Wesley Stevens, was the first permanent settler of Baylor County. He was also a founding member of the Texas Cattlemen's Association. Her husband, John Felix Tevis, died in 1958.
Mrs. Tevis graduated from Seymour High School and received a B.A. in Music Cum Laude from Texas Christian University. She was an elementary teacher in the school districts of Bomarton, Seymour, Port Arthur, Wichita Falls and Valley View (Hidalgo County) as well as in Our Lady of Sorrows in McAllen. She retired from teaching in 1984.
In Wichita Falls, Mrs. Tevis was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship of the First Christian Church, serving as President. She was also a member of United Church Women, Women's Forum, 1934 Study Club and CA Chapter of PEO.
Mrs. Tevis moved to McAllen in 1970. In the Rio Grande Valley she was active in St. Clair's Guild, Women of the Church and the Altar Guild of Trinity Episcopal Church of Pharr. She served as Recording Secretary of DV Chapter of PEO in McAllen. She was a member of Daughters of the Confederacy and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. In 1984, she was awarded "Teacher of the Year" Award by the Valley View I.S.D.
She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Martha Tevis of Edinburg, TX.
A memorial service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 4, 1998 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pharr, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 692, Pharr, TX 78577 or to a favorite charity of choice.
Services were entrusted to the care of Kreidler Funeral Home, Inc. in McAllen.
Roger V. Marek, Jr.
Roger V. Marek, Jr., 79, died Monday, November 23, 1998, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Funeral Mass was celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Seymour with the Rev. Richard Eldredge, pastor, officiating. Burial was in S.P.J.S.T. Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7871. Services were under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. Marek was born May 28, 1919, in Seymour. He and Lillian Sokora were married November 19, 1941, in Seymour. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving in several African and European campaigns. He was a lifelong resident of Baylor County and was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7871.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia Jackson of Seymour and Beverly Fisher of Electra; a son, Dennis of Seymour; a sister, Frances Hejl of Seymour; two brothers, Frank of Seymour, and Victor of Denton, Texas; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
