Betty Lou Gideon
Betty Lou Gideon, 76, passed from this life on Friday, July 20, 2001.
Funeral services were held July 22, at the Church of Christ in Seymour with Bro. A.B. Martin officiating. Burial was at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.
Betty was born in Baylor County on October 8, 1924. Her parents were Cecil (Warren) and Mixon Studer. Her brother, Mixon, Jr., was born on October 29, 1925. Her mother went to be with the Lord when Betty was only 3 years old. This was a very sad time for the family. Her grandparents, John and Gertrude Studer, helped raise Betty and Junior for a few years. They lived in the Ogden community, outside Seymour, with numerous relatives and friends.
Mixon, Sr., married Bessie Keel in August 1933, and they all moved to the Carter-Taylor Ranch. Her youngest brother, Bobby Glen, was born on June 27, 1934. Betty was in a family that loved the Lord. She spent a lot of time in church, while her dad preached and led singing. She loved to sing hymns and gospel songs. She accepted Jesus as savior, and was baptized as a young teenager. Betty attended the Ogden school as a child and she completed her education at Seymour High School in 1942.
In June of 1942, she married W.L. Witt and moved to Arizona. Their first daughter, Mickey Ethel, was born on May 19, 1943 in Nevada. During the war, W.L. joined the Navy and Betty moved to Texas. She lost a child, named Nancy Carolyn, during this time. They eventually moved to California, where Brenda Kay was born on August 10, 1946.
Betty’s brother, Mixon, Jr., was killed in a car accident during the late 1940s. This was a devastating time for the family. Everyone loved Junior so much. The family’s faith in God carried them through all of their pain and suffering, over the years.
In 1950, Betty was divorced and moved to Seymour. She and her cousin, Eileene (Studer) Ryan, operated a cafe for a while. They then went to work for GTE Phone Co.
In 1953, Betty married Weldon (Johnny) Gideon and moved to Knox City. Their son, Michael Don, was born on December 17, 1954. They divorced when Mike was 3 months old, and Betty moved back to Seymour. Her daughters, Mickey and Brenda, graduated high school and went to Austin for college.
Betty transferred to Memphis, Texas in 1967 with GTE. In 1970, she transferred to La Grange, to be closer to her daughters. In 1970, she moved to Bryan, where Mike graduated in 1973.
She retired from GTE in 1979, and her grandson, Adam Jeffrey Witt was born on August 17, 1979. Adam was her pride and joy. Her dad, Mixon, Sr., passed away in the early 1980s after a battle with cancer.
Betty received her real estate license and sold houses until 1988. She always talked about spending her last days in Seymour, so she could be close to many relatives and friends. But, God had a different plan. She developed a disease similar to Alzheimers, and spent her last 4 years in a nursing home in New Braunfels. During this time, she lost her son-in-law, Bill Stockwell to cancer. Bill was a special part of the family for almost 32 years, and Betty loved him dearly. Her stepmother, Bessie Studer passed away last September after a lengthy illness.
Betty’s devoted children, and the staff at Colonial Manor, made her life comfortable as they could. Brenda was the family’s “Angel of Mercy”. She lived close by, and was able to spend many days with Betty. Her children were with her when she peacefully passed away.
Even during her illness, she blessed people with her singing, her smile, and her loving heart. God used her to touch others until He called her home.
Betty is survived by two daughters, Mickey Stockwell of Galveston, and Brenda Witt of San Antonio. One son, Michael Gideon of Bryan. One grandson, Adam Witt of San Antonio; a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Genevieve Studer of Granbury; a nephew, David Studer; two nieces, Donna and Betty Studer, all of Granbury; and numerous relatives and friends, that she had during her long life.
Memorials may be made to The Alzheimers Association or your local chapter of Hospice Care.
