Elizabeth Johnson Davis
Elizabeth Johnson Davis, a life long resident of Wichita Falls, died August 9 at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. Her funeral was at First Presbyterian Church in Wichita Falls with burial in Seymour at the Masonic Cemetery on August 11.
Born in Seymour, Texas to Dr. and Mrs. Charles Edgar Johnson, Elizabeth grew up in Seymour and attended CIA, now Texas Womans University, with a Bachelor of Science degree. Her major was history and English. Her first job out of college was teaching in a one-room school on her father's land in Baylor County.
She married the late Jarrell H. Davis, also of Seymour, in 1940 in Detroit where he was stationed with the FBI. After several moves with the bureau, they settled in Wichita Falls where Jarrell headed the local office. Jarrell died in 1976. Jarrell was county attorney of Baylor County in the late 1930's and practiced law in Seymour before joining the FBI.
Elizabeth was active in her community belonging to the Twentieth Century Study Club, Woman's Forum, served as President of the Presbyterian Women's organization of the First Presbyterian Church, and was on the board of Day Nursery Society, among other affiliations in Wichita Falls. She also belonged to her family's chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Virginia and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, also in Virginia.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Elisa Davis Faye and son-in-law, Gilbert Faye; grandchildren and grandchildren-in-law; Lisa Faye and William Wilson of Plano, Texas, Patrick Sean Faye of Dallas, Texas, and Elizabeth Faye and John Gatz of Chicago, Illinois; great-granddaughters, Katrin Elise Gatz and Sarah Rachel Wilson; brother and sister-in-law, Charles Edgar and Elaine Johnson of Abilene; nephews and nieces-in laws, Chuck Johnson, Jay and Kathleen Johnson, Larry and Judi Johnson; niece and nephew-in-law, Gina Cannon and Jerry Kinnaird of Bedford; great nephews and great niece-in-law, Trey and Kim Kinnaird, Caleb Kinnaird, Cecil Cannon, Cameron, and Travis Johnson; and many cousins living in Fort Worth and other Texas cities.
The late Dr. Charles Edgar Johnson and Mabel Johnson were early settlers in Baylor County. Dr. Johnson practiced medicine in Seymour for a number of years. Her sisters were the late Glenna Johnson Power of Seymour and the late Virginia Johnson Cannon of Abilene.
Dorothy M. Marak
Dorothy M. Marak, age 77, of Seymour, died Monday, September 3, 2001 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Christian wake services were held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Funeral mass was held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Friar Richard Eldredge, officiating. Burial was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Bomarton, Texas. Services are under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Mrs. Marak was born July 25, 1924 in Rhineland, Texas. She and George Marak were married October 26, 1948 in Rhineland, Texas. She was a homemaker and lived in Bomarton until 1990 when she moved to Seymour. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, George of Seymour; two daughters, Gayle Morrison and husband, Mike of Wichita Falls, Texas; and Suzanne Beach and husband, Doyce of Seymour, Texas; one son, Greg Marak of Seymour, Texas and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Randy in 1959.
Bruce Bailey
Seymour resident, Bruce Bailey, age 81, passed from this life on Thursday, August 30, 2001, at the Hospice of Wichita Falls. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 2, 2001, at the Seymour Church of Christ with Scotte Clark and A.B. Martin officiating. Interment was in the Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by VFW Post #7871.
Mr. Bailey was born in Knox County, near the community of Red Springs, on December 13, 1919, to C.C. and Ruth Bailey, one of thirteen children. He married Thelma Blankenship on May 15, 1941, in Westover, Texas. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a machine gunner in the 304th Infantry in the European Theatre. He was a recipient of the Medal of Valor, and had been a member of the VFW for 35 years. Mr. Bailey retired in 1982 from Purolator Courier Services. He was a member of the Seymour Church of Christ.
Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by one son, Robert Bruce Bailey in 1951; by five brothers, seven sisters and his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma of the home; one sister-in-law, Linda Blankenship of the home; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Harold and Faye Stewart of Olney, Texas; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Thelbert and Peggy Blankenship of Wichita Falls, Texas; and three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bailey of Loveland, Colorado, Lori Bailey of Longmont, Colorado, and Juanita Bailey of Butte, Montana; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers were Boyd Bailey, Chris Bailey, Ronnie Bailey, Chris Key, Bob Robinson, and Perry Hudson.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Hospice of Wichita Falls, or to a children’s home of choice.
Pauline Kovar Holub
Pauline Kovar Holub, age 92, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at the local nursing home. Christian Wake services were held at 7 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2001, at the Seymour Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass was held 10 a.m. Monday, August 20, 2001 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Friar Richard Eldredge officiating. Interment was in the Bomarton Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Holub was born August 30, 1909 in Baylor County, Texas to Frank and Teresie Gress Kovar. She married George Joseph Holub on November 23, 1926 in Bomarton, Texas. He preceded her in death on April 14, 1967. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She is survived by two sons, Edwin Holub of Hurst, Texas and Lonnie Holub of Seymour, Texas; by one sister, Edna Holub of Seymour, Texas; by two grandchildren, Gabriele Bottorff and Jonathan Holub; by three great-grandchildren.
Irene Cunningham
Irene Cunningham, age 93, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2001, at the Lubbock Hospitality House. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 23, 2001, at the Seymour Church of Christ, with A.B. Martin officiating. Interment was in the Goree, Texas, Cemetery under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Cunningham, a homemaker, was born February 23, 1908, in Bartlett, Texas. She and Jimmie Cunningham were married in Munday, Texas, on April 23, 1925. She was a member of the Seymour Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband on November 10, 1983, and by a daughter, Agnes Ann Self in 1963.
Survivors include four daughters, Rheba Clark of Cincinnati, Ohio, Joyce Roberts of Des Moines, Washington, Lois Nell Adams of Bryan, Texas, and Carol Jane Gilstrap of Lubbock, Texas; by one son, Douglas Cunningham of Goree, Texas; by 25 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
Herbert Hoover Farr, Jr.
Herbert Hoover Farr, Jr., age 57, died Wednesday, September 19, 2001, following a brief illness in a Vernon Hospital.
Funeral services were held September 22, 2001, at 10:00 a.m. at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Carl Fisher and Reverend Frank Dominguez officiating. Interment was in Seymour Cemetery under the Direction of Sullivan Funeral Home of Vernon.
Herbert was born May 30, 1944, in Seymour, Texas a son of the Late Herbert Hoover and Elizabeth Farr. He married Otilia Lopez on April 20, 1979 in Jacksboro, Texas. He was a resident of Vernon since 1979 when he moved from Olney. He served in the U.S. Army and was a retired welder and carpenter. He was a member of Vernon Baptist Church. He was an avid John Wayne fan and enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Otilia of the home; three daughters, Ruthann Reeves and Susanne Ranjel, both of Vernon, and Angela Hagenmier of Nocona, Texas; one son, Bobby Craig of Marietta, Oklahoma; one brother, Ricky Williams of Mesquite, Texas; two sisters, Cathy Beckham of Rockwall, Texas and Janieth Machala of Seagonville, Texas; eight grandchildren and two uncles.
Memorials may be made to Vernon Baptist Church.
Mary Edna Kirby
Mary Edna Kirby, 86 died Saturday September 29, 2001 at Homestead of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, October 1 at Waldo Funeral Home Chapel, the Reverend Danny Woods of West Sherman Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the Cedarlawn Memorial Park.
Born June 12, 1915 in Bonham to Martin Andrew and Dora Weatherford Dial, she graduated from Seymour Schools and Decatur Baptist College and attended business college in Wichita Falls.
Mary Edna Dial married Lee H. Hall November 25, 1933 in Seymour. He preceded her in death in 1955. She later married Woodrow W. Kirby August 30, 1963 in Denton and was widowed again in 1972.
She was a supervisor of the top floor of Maddens Department Store in Denison. She was also the buyer of ladies ready to wear and sports wear. While in Wichita Falls she worked as a secretary in a lawyer’s office and for an insurance company. She also worked at Knights Furniture and Lilleys. She was a member of West Sherman Baptist Church.
Pallbearers were John Stroud, Billy Charles Stroud, Edgar Dial, Earl Dial, Dean Lilliebridge and Joe Ward.
Memorials can be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
Mrs. Kirby is survived by her son Jimmy Lee Hall and wife Linda, grandchildren Kim Stephens, Jennifer Hall and Jimmy Hall II, great-grandchildren Nicholas Stephens and Lauren Stephens, all of Sherman, step-grandchildren Debbie and Deryell Sparks of Coppell, Julie and Lee Elkins of Bryan, Dee Dee and Dave Kelly of Little Elm and five step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by all eleven of her brothers and sisters.
James H. Johnson
James H. Johnson, age 70, of Seymour died Saturday, September 29, 2001.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church officiated by Reverend Glenn Shock, Pastor. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery, Seymour, Texas, under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Mr. Johnson was born October 23, 1930 in Spanish Fort, Texas. He was a veteran serving his country from 1951 to 1953. He and Shirley Black were married January 9, 1954 in Jacksboro, Texas. he moved from Jacksboro to Seymour in 1956. James was a production foreman for McMahon Bullington Drilling Co. for 40 years before retiring in 1996. he was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by: wife, Shirley Johnson of Seymour, Texas; daughter, Sheryl Wiles of Seymour; two sons Don Johnson of Megargel, Texas and Ron Johnson of Jacksboro, Texas; brother, Clayton Johnson of Cleburne, Texas; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
