Gene Ed Snyder
Gene Ed Snyder, 68, died Thursday, February 18, 1999.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 21, 1999, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brad Enloe and the Rev. David Hamblin officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery in Seymour under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Mr. Snyder was born July 4, 1930, in Baylor County, Texas. He and Billye Guthrie were married June 17, 1951, in Round Timbers, Texas. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War as a communications specialist. He became self employed, owning Snyder Radio and Television Repair from 1957 until 1998. He was a member of the Methodist Church where he had served on the executive committee. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7871.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Vicki Dawn of Dallas; three sons, Gary, David and Eddie, all of Seymour; three sisters, Margaret New of Winston-Salem, N.C., Billye Hendrix of Greenwood, Arkansas, and Nancy Norman of Livorini, Italy; two brothers, James of Seymour and Don of Houston; and ten grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or the Cross Roads Family Church at Farmers National Bank.
Willie Carl Raphelt
Willie Carl Raphelt, 75, of Abilene died Sunday, February 14, 1999, in an Abilene hospital.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, 1999 at Zion Lutheran Church with David Bahn, pastor, and Norm Steinke, pastor officiating. Burial was in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home.
Mr. Raphelt was born July 26, 1923, in Sagerton, Texas. He and Verna Corrine Krinke were married June 12, 1949, in Sagerton. She died in September 1997. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He graduated from Stamford High School in Stamford, Texas. He received a bachelor of arts degree from North Texas State College in 1952. He taught for a total of 28 years in several school districts, including Seymour ISD and Sonora ISD from which he retired. He moved to Abilene from Sonora in 1987. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Abilene and the Wagon Wheel Dance Club.
Survivors include two sons, Nolan Keith of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Garland Lynn of Arlington; his stepmother, Emma of Stamford; three brothers, Herman of Lubbock, Melvin Baitz of Rule and Leslie Baltz of Austin; four sisters, Lillie Mae Reed of Roby, Dorothy Clark of Rule, Lillie Mae Stegemoeller of Sagerton and Ruby Olson of San Angelo; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Rosalena McMahon
Rosalena McMahon, 97, died Sunday, February 14, 1999.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at Trinity Lutheran Church of Seymour with the Rev. Keith Schweitzer officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Mrs. McMahon was born February 20, 1901, in Seymour. Her husband, Leroy McMahon, died in 1951. She was a lifetime resident of Knox and Baylor County. She taught school in Lively, Texas, Cottonwood, Texas, and Vera, Texas, schools. She was a Lutheran.
Survivors include a sister, Margaret Nelson of Seymour; and a brother, Sam Wirz of Redlands, California.
Ola Irene Coffman
Ola Irene Coffman, 89, died Wednesday, February 10, 1999, in a Munday nursing home.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 13, at Goree First Baptist Church with the Rev. Lenard Brothers officiating. Burial was in Goree Cemetery under the direction of McCauley-Smith Funeral Home.
Mrs. Coffman was born June 7, 1909, in Livingston, Texas. She and Dude M. Coffman were married October 31, 1927, in Haskell, Texas. He died November 13, 1976. She was a longtime resident of Goree before moving to Munday several years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of Goree First Baptist Church. She was a ham radio operator.
Survivors include a sister, Pauline Howry of Yuma, Arizona; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.
Calvin Coolidge Christian
Calvin Coolidge Christian, age 75, of Seymour, passed away Friday, February 12, 1999, in the Westview Care Center.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, February 15, 1999, at the Vera United Methodist Church with the Reverend Glenn Shock, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Seymour, officiating. Burial was in the Vera Cemetery under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home, with military graveside rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7871.
Music was provided by a men's quartet comprised of Ronnie Reeves, Sid Winn, Clifton Talley and the Reverend Glenn Shock, accompanied by Mrs. Billie Gene Young, pianist.
Pallbearers were Richard Roberts, John Studer, Lewis Christian, Jerome Christian, Mark Hertel and Keith Beck. Honorary Pallbearers were Ernest Beck, Harold Beck, Gaylon Scott, Elton Scott, Claudell Bratcher, Oliver Albright, Johnny Allen, Morris Cockrell, Morris Robertson, Horton Porter, Pinky Arledge, Roy Boone, Ferman Dowd and Roy Quisenberry, Jr.
Mr. Christian was born on December 13, 1923, to Luther Morris and Mary Azyline Franklin Christian, in Jack County, Texas. As an infant, he moved with his parents to Knox County, Texas. He enlisted in the Army in December 1943, and served in the Antitank Company of the 18th Infantry, 1st Division, in the vicinity of Ranscheid, Germany. He was wounded in action, losing his right eye, with face and neck wounds and was therefore released in February 1945. He was awarded a Bronze Star for voluntarily assisting medical aid in evacuating casualties from a heavily mined area and despite added danger from an intense artillery and mortar barrage, fearlessly made repeated trips across hazardous terrain, until wounded by an exploding mine. He was also awarded the Purple Heart. He was returned to Menlo Park, California, to a Veterans hospital and was later sent to the V.A. Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.
After returning to Vera, he entered Texas Tech University in Lubbock and in 1947, began farming in Knox County, Texas. He and Carole Janette Beck were married July 31, 1949, in the First Baptist Church of Vera, Texas. He moved into Seymour in 1960, but continued to farm until his retirement in 1996.
He was converted at an early age and was a member of the Vera Methodist Church. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7871.
Mr. Christian was preceded in death by a brother, Hudson, and his mother and father.
He is survived by his wife, Janette; a daughter, Sharon Hertel, of Bomarton, Texas; two sons, Scott, of Seymour and Steve of Spring, Texas; one brother, Morris, of Seymour; three sisters, Bobbie Bentley and Katherine Patterson, both of Arlington, Texas, and Diane Couch of Seymour. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Chris and Calvin Christian of Spring, Texas; Shane Christian of Seymour; and Jessica, Meaghan, Damon and Adam Hertel of Bomarton, Texas.
Lucille Massey
Lucille Massey, age 90, passed away February 13, 1999, in Garland, Texas, where she resided for over 20 years. She was a homemaker, formerly of Seymour, Texas, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles M. and Dorothy Massey of San Antonio, Texas, Jimmy R. and Jerry Massey of Wichita Falls, Texas, Tommy M. and Millie Massey of Weatherford, Texas; daughters and son-in-law, Patsy Capp of Garland, Texas, Mary and Lamar Peterson of Bedford, Indiana, Peggy Emerson of Garland, Texas, Judy Cook of Garland, and Janice Massey of Garland; sister, Wilma Meetz of Amarillo, Texas; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Massey, five sisters and one brother.
Services were held, 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 16, in Williams Funeral Chapel. Interment followed at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 17, at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour, Texas, under the direction of Williams Funeral Directors of Garland.
James E. Barnes
James E. (Ed) Barnes, age 70, died Saturday, February 6, 1999, in a Chillicothe Hospital following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 9, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Chillicothe with Reverend Wallace Clay and Reverend Jeff Weems officiating. Interment was in Chillicothe cemetery under the direction of Manard Funeral Home.
Mr. Barnes was born June 2, 1928 in Odell, Texas. A son of the late Fred and Lola Mae Richardson Barnes. He married Lillian Mae Draper on August 19, 1950, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Vernon, Texas. He had been a resident of Hardeman County since he was 12 years old. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chillicothe and had served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian of Chillicothe, Texas; six daughters, Patsy Ward of Phoenix, AZ., Donna Barnes of Chillicothe, TX., Rhonda Lambert of Raleigh, NC., Theresa Cordes of Corinth, TX., Lisa Anto of Celina, TX., and Laura Jones of Frisco, TX.; two sons, Gary Barnes of Seymour, TX., and Terry Barnes of Chillicothe, TX.; a sister, Jesse Fay Cornilison of Altus, OK., and several half sisters and brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Raymond Barnes and a sister, Ruby Barnes.
Memorials may be made to Texoma Hospice or Church United Ministry. Pallbearers were Bill Haynes, Stan Meeks, Donald Ray Wilson, Mike Draper and Ken Robinson.
