Ina Thompson Elkins
Ina Lucille Thompson Elkins, 82, died Monday, March 29, 1999, in a Bridgeport, Texas, care center.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Seymour, Texas, Church of Christ. Burial was in Henson Cemetery in Red Springs, Texas, under the direction of Archer Funeral Home in Seymour.
Mrs. Elkins was born September 8, 1916, in Baylor County, Texas. She and Stanley Elkins were married March 8, 1944. He died in 1975. She lived in Baylor County until 1953 when she moved to Jacksboro. In 1958 she moved to Bowie and operated the Hutchinson Courts for 25 years. She was a member of the Carter Lake Road Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Thursday Club, the Home Demonstration Club and Maids and Matrons. She helped with Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include a daughter, Yvonne Todd of Runaway Bay, Texas; two sisters, Floy Stringer of Fort Worth and Juanita Gleghorn of Duncan, Oklahoma; a brother, Tom Thompson of Jacksonville, Florida; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
J.C. “Jim” Bumpass
J.C. “Jim” Bumpass, 66, died Friday, April 2, 1999, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 1999, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Megee, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Archer Funeral Home in Seymour, Texas.
Mr. Bumpass was born July 19, 1932, in Seymour, Texas. He was a lifetime resident of Seymour where he owned and operated Bumpass Garage until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Jerry of Justin, Texas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Daniel Alvin Boone
Daniel Alvin Boone, 75, died Monday, April 26, 1999 in Jacksboro, Texas.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, April 28, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Vera Cemetery with Dannie Gwinn, Pastor of New Covenant Church in Seymour, Texas, officiating. Burial was held in Vera Cemetery in Vera, Texas. Services are under the direction of Archer Funeral Home in Seymour, Texas.
Mr. Boone was born August 30, 1923 in Vera, Texas. He and Dorothy Boone were married in 1957 in Odessa, Texas. He worked for the City of Jacksboro before retiring. He lived in Lubbock, Texas for many years before moving to Jacksboro.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; three brothers, Harlan Boone of Gorman, Ernest Boone of Odessa, Texas and Tony Boone of Vera, Texas; two sisters, Thelma Ruth Clowers of Odessa, Texas and Carol Reynolds of Mineral Wells, Texas.
O.R. “Obb” Miller
O.R. “Obb” Miller, age 89, formerly of Gilliland, Texas, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at the Munday Nursing Center. Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 22, 1999, at the Gilliland Church of Christ, with A.B. Martin, Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Gilliland Cemetery under the Direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. Miller was born September 4, 1909, in Seymour, Texas. He was raised in Gilliland where he was a lifelong resident. He married Florence Althea Whatley on December 24, 1937, in Vernon, Texas. She died August 10, 1994. He was a farmer, a member of the Gilliland Church of Christ, the Munday Domino Club, and had served on the Gilliland Co-Op Board for many years.
He is survived by one son, Jacky Miller, of Slaton, Texas; by four grandchildren, Royce Wayne Miller, Rhonda Gayle Redding, Jarrod Miller and Jay Miller; and by four great-grandchildren, M’Randa, Marla and Zachary Miller, and Colton Redding.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lillian Jeanette Miller on January 10, 1942, and by a son, Bobby Miller on March 6, 1972.
Alma Lake
Alma Lake, age 94, passed away Monday, April 19, 1999 at the local care center. Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Monday, April 26, 1999, at the Riverview Cemetery in Seymour. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, at the First Presbyterian Church in Seymour, with Dr. Edward C. Hart, officiating. Services are under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lake was born April 29, 1904, in Glenville, New York. She and William Lake were married in 1924 in Schenectady, New York. She was a homemaker, and had worked for General Electric Company, and also as a Tailor in Schenectady, New York. She moved to Englewood, Florida in 1967, and was active as a Bible Club Leader. She moved to Seymour in 1979. She attended the First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Vivian Hart of Seymour, Texas; by one son, David Lake of Lutz, Florida; seven grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lake, in 1967; by one daughter, Shirley Lake in 1987; and by one son, Richard Lake in 1958.
The family requests memorials be made to the Westview Care Center.
Etta Sharp Riggins
Etta Sharp Riggins, 94, of Irving, Texas, died, Thursday, April 15, 1999, in a Bedford, Texas, hospital.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Seymour Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Shock, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery.
Mrs. Riggins was born September 2, 1904, in Atoka, Oklahoma. She and Ralph Riggins were married May 7, 1922, in Prague, Oklahoma. He died July 17, 1993. She moved to Haskell County in 1937, coming to Baylor County in1949. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a farmer. She had lived in Irving since 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Louise Crouch of Irving; two sons, Glenn of Emery and Harold of Irving; a sister, Alta Hardy of Kennasaw, Georgia; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Vera Wirz
Vera Wirz, 86, of Seymour died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, in a Seymour hospital.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 16, 1999 at First Presbyterian Church of Seymour with Dr. Edward C. Hart officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Wirz was born June 7, 1912, in Abilene, Texas. She and G.C. “Clements” Wirz were married on September 19, 1930, in Clovis, N.M. He died April 16, 1995. She was raised in Tuscola and Buffalo Gap before coming to Baylor County in 1927. She was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Patterson and Patricia Mooney, both of Seymour; a son, Gilbert of Seymour; four sisters, Winifred Farris and Myrtle Perkins, both of Seymour, Martha Gentry of Lovington, N.M., and Hazel Lassiter of Corpus Christi, Texas; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church.
Chaplain J.T. Shipman,
U.S. Navy (Ret.)
Chaplain J.T. Shipman, U.S. Navy (Ret.) 73, of Paris died Thursday, April 8, 1999 at his home.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, in Gene Roden’s Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain George R. McHorse, U.S. Navy (Ret.) and the Rev. Carter Lyles officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, was in Evergreen Cemetery.
He was born May 17, 1925, in Vera, Texas, to Hubert and Chancie Taylor Shipman. He married Georgianna Uzzell August 11, 1952. She died September 29, 1997. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Mr. Shipman was a degreed graduate of Baylor University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Boston University. He served as a Navy chaplain from 1956-74 and received the Asiatic-Pacific Operations medal with two stars, the American Theatre of Operations and Victory World War II, medals, and a Navy Unit Citation. He served with MOMM3 Amphibious Forces from 1943-45.
Surviving are daughters, Paula Richard of Paris and Dru Ann DeFratus and husband Doug of Corpus Christi; a sister, Loyce McKown of Lorena; sisters-in-law, Margaret Kerrick of Owensboro, KY and Drunell Summers and husband, Bill, of Vivian, Lousiana; four grandchildren; five nephews; and three nieces.
Pallbearers were Lawrence Wade, Bob Myers, Roy Welch, Wayne Fletcher, Ron McKown, and Lewis Ingram.
