Spc. Ryan Charles King
Fort Hood officials have released the name of a Soldier who died supporting Operation Enduring Freedom near the village of Nishagam, in Konar Province, Afghanistan on May 1, 2009.
Spc. Ryan Charles King, 22, of Dallas, Georgia, a Common Ground Station Operator, entered the military in November 2005. He was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division since July 2007.
The Soldier died from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using direct fire.
Spc. King deployed to Afghanistan June 2008.
Specialist King’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and NATO Medal.
Spc. Jeremiah Paul McCleery
Fort Hood officials have released the name of a Soldier who died supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He died from wounds sustained after being shot by enemy forces in Mosul, Iraq on May 2, 2009.
Spc. Jeremiah Paul McCleery, 24, of Portola, California, a Fire Support Specialist, entered the military in June 2007. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since December 2007.
McCleery deployed to Iraq December 2008.
Specialist McCleery’s awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.
Pvt. James Baxter McCoy
Fort Hood officials have released the name of a 1st Cavalry Division Soldier who died April 21, 2009 in Minnetonka, Minnesota from noncombat injuries.
Pvt. James Baxter McCoy, 21, of Haynesville, Louisiana joined the military in May 2008 as an Armor Crewman and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since October 2008.
McCoy was found unresponsive by a relative. Emergency Medical Service was called to the residence where Private McCoy was pronounced deceased at the scene. Cause of death is still pending.
Private McCoy deployed to Iraq January 2009.
Private McCoy’s military awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
Sgt. James Dewel Pirtle

Sgt. James Dewel Pirtle, 21, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a Signals Intelligence Analyst, entered the military in July 2006. He was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division since June 2007.
The Soldier died from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using direct fire.
Pirtle deployed to Afghanistan June 2008.
Sergeant Pirtle’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and NATO Medal.
Pvt. Stephen Alexander Blake
Fort Hood officials have released the name of a Soldier who was found dead in his barracks room on post Aug. 26, 2009. The cause of death is still undetermined at this time.
Pvt. Stephen Alexander Blake, 24, of Chicago, Illinois entered the military August 2007 as an Infantryman and was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since January 2008.
Private Blake was found unresponsive in his barracks room by a member of his unit. Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin arrived on scene and pronounced the Soldier deceased.
Private Stephen Blake’s decorations and awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.
The incident is under investigation.
Mary Elizabeth Norwood Esch
Mary Elizabeth Norwood Esch, of Fort Worth and formerly of Salado, passed away Aug. 26, 2009.
A memorial service was held on Sept. 1 at University Christian Church.
Mary was born March 26, 1942, in Temple, daughter of Fred and Helen Norwood.
She grew up in Salado, McGregor and Temple, graduating from Temple High School in 1960.
She attended the University of Texas at Austin and in 1964 married
the love of her life, John Esch, whom she had met as a freshman at McGregor High School.
While Mary and John raised their two sons in Fort Worth, Mary became a champion of community work, volunteering and campaigning for the March of Dimes, The Oakridge School, the Easter Seals Society and Cancer Care, among many other charities.
She led Oakridge as the chairperson of the board of regents and later as co-chair (with John) of Oakridge’s capital campaign. For Easter Seals North Texas (formerly United Cerebral Palsy), she had been a board member since 1997. She helped create its annual Hats Off to Mothers banquet in 2002. In 2005, she was selected as a Mother of the Year.
Mary and John Esch were recognized as Distinguished Philanthropists by the Fort Worth Metro Chapter of the Association of Fund Raising Professionals in 1999.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, John Esch of Fort Worth and two sons, Grainger Esch of Salado and Gregor Esch of Fort Worth.

2nd Lt. Joseph D. Fortin
Army 2nd Lt. Joseph D. Fortin, 22, of St. Johnsbury, Vt., died Aug. 23, 2009 in Hussaniyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.
Fortin entered the Army in June 2008. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, since March 2009, as a Field Artillery Officer.
Lieutenant Fortin’s awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Medal.
Spc. Matthew Dishongh Hastings
Fort Hood announced the death of a Soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Spc. Matthew Dishongh Hastings, 23, of Claremore, Oklahoma, died August 17, 2009, in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related.
Hastings joined the military in Aug. 2006 as a Light-Wheel Vehicle Mechanic and was assigned to the 582nd Mechanical Logistics Company, 1st Medical Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command and has been stationed at Fort Hood since February 2007.
Specialist Hastings’ awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon.
Patsy Ruth King
Private services for Patsy Ruth King, of Belton will be held at a later date.
She passed away August 6, 2009, in a Temple hospital.
Patsy was born March 12, 1938 to James Alton and Ruth Fate (Belk) Procter in Temple. She attended Temple High School. Mrs. King was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 4008. She was a former member of the Killeen Garden Club and several Temple and Killeen bowling leagues. Patsy worked as a property manager for many years. She proudly served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include one son, Christopher DeWitt King of Houston; one daughter Alisa Michelle King of Salado; one grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother James Procter; one sister, Shirley Jarolik.
Heartfield Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Jean White
Jean White, 67, of Salado Texas, passed away on Sunday evening August 23, 2009 at 5:30 p.m., due to medical complications. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Jean was born in Illinois and raised in Missouri. She went to college in Oklahoma and then moved to Texas. She was a bank officer for several years while in Waco, TX and donated her free time to the Waco Historical Foundation, the Park Board and the Waco Hippodrome. While in Salado Jean was a Lions Club member, a Chamber of Commerce member, a Salado Business Association member, a member of the Salado Area of Republican Women and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary.
Jean resided in Salado for 15 years. She is survived by her husband Paul of 42 years; her 39 year old son Bryan and his wife Tara of Covington, LA; grandchildren Jack and Maryella White; and sister Jo Evans of Joplin, MO.
