LAURA SACHTLEBEN WALSER
Laura Sachtleben Walser passed away at her home on the family ranch near Blanco Aug. 5, 2002, in her 91st year.
Laura was born June 15,1912, a hot Saturday afternoon -- according to her memoir, “On the Powell Ranch in Goliad County” -- to Emil George Sachtleben and Maria Schulenburg Sachtleben. She spent her long and productive life, first working in the telephone industry to support herself, raising two successful sons, Jim, a medical scientist and Bill, a screen writer and -- later in life -- pursuing her interest in travel, conservation, handcrafts, needlework and painting. At least 500 of her Texas landscapes hang in homes throughout the country and Europe.
Her life during WWII as an independent-spirited, single, working mother with two young boys was the inspiration for the feature film, “Raggedy Man,” written and co-produced by son Bill. Sissy Spacek played the role of Laura on screen.
A year or so before her 80th birthday, she wrote in longhand a manuscript that would become a 325-page printed memoir entitled Eighty Years of Memories. Laura Walser’s life story told in her own words has touched the lives of family and friends, and will enable generations of descendants to know and love this extraordinary woman.
Laura leaves behind her devoted husband Gordan A. Walser, son Dr. James L. Wittliff and wife Mitzie, son William D. Wittliff and wife Sally; also four grandchildren J. Derich Wittliff, W. Kurt Wittliff, William Reid Wittliff, Allison Wittliff Spencer; and three great-grandchildren Willow Rae Wittliff, Wyatt W. Wittliff and William Sloan Wittliff.
