GERTRUDE (TRUDY) ROBBINS UNGER
Gertrude (Trudy) Robbins Unger earned her angel wings and was returned to her heavenly Father Oct. 17, 2003. A beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and good friend to so many, she lived a full and giving life for 88 years.
Born March 16, 1915, near Johnson City to Ernst and Lizzie Klappenbach, she was one of four daughters and a son. She married George Robbins, also of Johnson City, in 1937.
Gertrude and George enjoyed 39 years of marriage before his death in 1977. While living in different locations throughout the Texas hill country, they raised a son and two daughters and owned and operated many restaurants.
An exceptional cook, Gertrude will be remembered by many for her delicious homemade doughnuts, Ranger cookies, and in her later years, for really great mashed potatoes (the leftovers fought over by many to eat for dessert).
After retiring from the restaurant business, she opened a plant nursery in Johnson City and often diagnosed ailing plants for her friends and customers.
Gaining her greatest pleasure from the gifts of her time and talents, whether cooking, gardening or taking care of those she loved or those less fortunate, she was truly a giving soul. During the past 11 years, her greatest friend was her great-granddaughter, Chelsea Nolte. They spent many loving hours together and Chelsea spent every spare moment with her Mee Maw, not out of obligation, or because of age, but because through her eyes, and in her mind, Mee Maw was just her best friend in the world and Mee Maw’s best friend in the world was Chelsea, and the family cherishes Chelsea all the more for this.
From 1979 to 1983, Gertrude lovingly cared for her second husband, Bob Williams, of Johnson City, through a lengthy illness. Bob also helped her build and take care of her plant nursery.
Gertrude was given the nickname of “Trudy” by her third husband, Leo Unger, of Leander. She enjoyed helping Leo in his work with the Hill Country Ministries and was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Leander. After his death in 1995, Trudy remained active in the community and enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren.
She especially enjoyed playing Canasta with her friends at the Hill Country Community Center in Cedar Park.
Trudy spent the last few years of her life in Corpus Christi, surrounded by her loving granddaughter Kim, her husband Larry, and their five children (one of these being Chelsea).
Preceding her in death were the aforementioned husbands, her only son, Owen Robbins of California, her oldest daughter, Mary Helen Robbins of Austin, one sister, Anna Crofts of Johnson City, and her only brother, Hugo Ernst Klappenbach of Fredericksburg.
She is survived by her only living child, Judy Robbins, companion Randy Wood, and a stepdaughter, Lisa Williams, all of Austin; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nell Fuchs of Fredericksburg and Margaret Rittiman of Kerrville; and many nephews and nieces.
The family requests in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Westwood Manor Nursing Home in Corpus Christi. Robyn’s Exclusives will accept flowers until the family arrives.
A celebration of her life will be held in the small city park in Johnson City at the pavilion Oct. 25 at 2 p.m.
