CAGE
The chorus “Lord, make me a living sanctuary for thee” captures the essence of Mrs. Carlton (Wilma) Cage. Serving the Lord with gladness was the focus of her life in Blanco. The membership of the First Baptist Church of Blanco has been blessed by her dedication at the local church.
Civic organizations as the Ranch Highway Home Demonstration Club, the Woman’s Club, AARP, Ladies for Lyndon provided community outreach for her; enjoying the San Antonio Symphony offered occasional social outreach, but Wilma emphatically stated, “The Church members are my family.” Wilma is a part of “The Family of God.”
Wilma never missed an opportunity to unite at the local church, until aging initiated her moving across the street from her residence into the local nursing home. When the Long family and others occasionally brought her to morning services, she beamed.
Wilma Cage never faltered to offer her testimony in or out of church. After Tom Lanier held the “Jesus Alive” crusade from the Blanco Theater, she offered “this revival will last.” Traveling to El Paso with Cicero, Olla, and C.A. Rust III, the awesome wilderness and mountainous configurations reminded her of her salvation experience. In services in the early 90’s, she revealed the Lord’s stressing to her the importance of giving thanks in all things.
Wilma sang soprano in the sanctuary choir for decades. How the music moved her! She stated that, when Angie Smith, Vickie Pautz, Claire Gloor, or Joan Tatum would strike the first chord of a hymn, she was blessed. Her favorite hymns include, “How Great Thou Art,” “To God Be Thy Glory,” “We Have Heard the Joyful Sound,” and “Amazing Grace.” She especially likes the call to worship “Sing, Sing, Sing,: that George Covin directed frequently.
She traveled with the choir as it sang at community functions, funerals in the community, revivals in the area, and association meetings in Central Texas.
She always boarded the church bus as the Recreation Committee, sponsored day trips to Aquarena Springs, LBJ Ranch, malls, and the San Antonio Zoo.
All facets of church life engaged Wilma -- the WMU, the Hostess Committee, her deviled eggs always were a treat at dinner on the grounds.
She told the History Committee that she would like to be remembered as having started the first vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church.
She last taught Sunday School during the 1989-1990 term; she and C.A. Rust III taught 21 fifth graders.
Wilma Cage influenced positively all with whom she came in contact. Mike Moraign recalls since his being age 16, Wilma consistently had a hug and smile waiting for him at Church; stern and sweet Wilma would admonish, as a Grandmother would, to have manners and to treat all courteously.
She administered God’s lesson of patience to her pastors: Br. Stevens, Bro. Kenny, Bro. Dove, Bro. Harvey, Charlie Tatum, Tommy Walden, Tom Lanier, Danny Murray, Carroll Fikes, Rusty and Mary Lou Hicks. The Hicks, daughters, Karen and Stacey, held special loving places in Wilma’s heart.
Wilma passed away Thursday, February 14, 2002 in Blanco at the age of 98. She was born September 28, 1903 in Waco.
Services were held Monday, February 18, 2002 at Crofts Funeral Home with Rev. Rusty Hicks officiating.
Pallbearers were Doug, Pautz, Lee Cage, Dorsey Lee Smith, Darrell Fishbeck, Dan Murrah and Leroy Hicks.
