Irene Watson
Irene Watson’s long and productive life came to a peaceful end November 16, 2004.
Irene was born March 31, 1911 to Howard and Ella DeGlandon Fleming in the Oak Hill Community, Bastrop County, Texas. She and her six sisters and
brothers grew up on the family farm and learned early the importance of family and hard work. Along with many happy experiences and fond memories,
her upbringing instilled in her the lifelong traits of hard work, thrift,
and caring for family and others.
In 1932 Irene graduated from the Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing in Austin. She loved the nursing profession and was herself beloved by generations of lives she touched with her loving and compassionate care giving. She was proud of her association with Dr. J. Gordon Bryson and the
Bastrop Hospital; her work in the Brackenridge Hospital O.R. and E.R.; her service to the students of the Texas School for the Deaf; her work with the patients of the T.B. Sanatorium; and her many years as office nurse with Dr. John Weaver. Last year, at age 92, Irene attended the Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing reunion as an honored alumna.
Irene was married to Herman L. Watson for more than 55 years before he predeceased her in 1992. She lost her son James when he was 19 but kept his memory ever fresh. She was also predeceased by her parents, her brothers Curtis, Hubert, Russ and Jack Fleming, and by her sister Elloween Cox.
Irene is survived by her son John and his wife Erin of Johnson City; her grandsons David and his wife Kate of Austin, and Coke and his wife Diane and great grandson Coke Jr. of Houston. Also surviving her are her sister Ina Mae Knowles and her sister-in-law Elenora Fleming. She also leaves to remember her a host of much loved nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. In October Irene attended the 80th annual reunion of the DeGlandon family and had the pleasure of visiting with more than 100 family members.
Irene was a woman sustained by her faith and was loyal member of Crestview Baptist Church for more than 50 years.
The family would like to express special appreciation to Maria Valle, the wonderful staff at the LBJ Medical Center of Johnson City, and to Linda Watkins, the keeper of the DeGlandon family flame and faithful visitor and friend to Irene.
