ALTA MAE BYARS
Alta Mae Byars, age 98, beloved mother and grandmother, was gathered into the arms of the Lord Dec. 12, 2002.
Alta Mae was born May 9, 1904, in Hye to Marshall William and Josephine (Garrett) Billingsley.
Alta Mae married Albert Floyd Byars Dec. 19, 1922, in Blanco.
She is survived by one son, Douglas D. Byars and wife Angela of San Antonio; four grandchildren, Marsha Plunk and husband David of Mansfield, IL, Carol Byars and husband Bill McHenry of Blue Hill, Me., Brian Byars of Carrizo Springs, and Jamie Hershiser and husband Orel of Windermere, FL, four great-grandchildren, Quinton and Jordan Hershiser and Alex and Lydia Plunk, as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Alta Mae was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Dorothy Dean; one sister, Flaurel Landrum; and two brothers Floyd and Vernon Billingsley.
Alta Mae was an avid domino player and enjoyed the piano, especially hymns.
She was a devoted mother and although she endured many hardships in her life, she had a positive attitude and laughed easily. Her sunny disposition will be missed by everyone.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 17. Interment followed in Mission Burial Park South.
ALWINA WITTKOHL
Alwina Wittkohl passed way at the age of 72 Wednesday May 14, 2003, in Blanco.
Alwina is survived by her children, Doyle Wittkohl, Carlos Wittkohl, Charles and Debi Wittkohl and Randy Wittkohl, all of Blanco; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers, Marvin Weirich and Victor Weirich, both of Blanco and Franklin and Berthie Weirich of Austin; three sisters, Tekla and Leroy Oehler of Fredericksburg, Erma Felps of Pearsall and Viola Hall of Austin.
Services were held Saturday, May 17, at the Chapel of Beckmann Funeral Home in Fredericksburg with Rev. Dale Friedrich officiating. Interment followed in Der Stadt Friedhof.
Memorials may be given to Hill Country Memorial Hospice, American Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.
BENNO C. AHRENS
Benno C. Ahrens was born June 24, 1911, on a ranch near Stonewall. Benno was the youngest of nine children that were born to Henry and Clara (Alberthal) Ahrens.
Benno passed away Dec. 3, 2002, at the Deer Creek Nursing Center in Wimberley at the age of 91.
In 1935, he married Elda McDougall at Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonewall. They moved to Austin in 1942. Elda preceded him in death in 1983.
Benno is survived by one son Gerald Ahrens, wife Marjorie and daughter Christy; two daughters and their spouses, Dorothy and Wilbert Edmunds and son Randy; and Norma and Robert Ceder, children Ray, wife Sydney and daughters Megan and Kelly; Monty, wife Sherry and children Lacy and Chase; Sharon and Jimmy Biddle, and son Darren, all of Austin. One sister-in-law, Alma McDougall, also survive as well as many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
Preceding Benno in death, in addition to his wife Elda, were six sisters and brothers-in-law.
Benno was the manager at Thom McAn Shoes for many years and will be remembered for his good heart, gentle spirit, sense of humor and big smile for everyone. To know him was to love him.
The family would like to thank all his care givers at Deer Creek for their loving care the past four years.
Graveside services were held Dec. 5, 2002, at the Masonic Cemetery in Johnson City with Pastor Tim Anderson officiating.
Those desiring to honor his memory may make memorial contributions to Hospice Austin or St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin.
VENITA BEALL
Venita Beall, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002.
Venita ws born Nov. 13, 1916, to Clint and Linnie White of Blanco and was raised there by her Aunt Pearl and Uncle Alex Evans. Venita completed high school as salutatorian and attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos. On June 14, 1934, she married Robert B. Beall in Norman, Oklahoma. Prior to her retirement in July 1991, she was self-employed witha bookkeeping service for trucking companies and individuals in the trucking business. Venita was a member of Crossroads Cathedral Assembley of God Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1990.
Venita is survived by her daughter, Bobbie Lookabaugh and husband Ed of Midland; grandchildren, Matt and wife Kim Lookabaugh, Carol and husband Bryan Raschke, Andy and wife Pam Lookabaugh; nine great-grandchildren, Casey and wife Robyn Tibbs, Jeff and Kristen Lookabaugh, Brad, Craig and Sarah Raschke, Dale, Justin and Brook Lookabaugh; cousins, Holmes Evans of Durant, OK. and Betty Jean Evans of Blanco. She also survived by many family and friends who will miss her greatly.
Graveside services were held Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Resthan Memorial Gardens in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, with Rev. Gary Bohannan of Crossroads Cathedral and Venita’s nephew, Reverend R.B. Mathis, officiating.

DEBRA M. MARESH
Debra “Debbie” M. Maresh, age 42, of Blanco, died on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 in Houston.
Debbie was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. She was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Wendland.
Debbie is survived by her husband, Alexander J. Maresh Jr. of Blanco; son, Alexander J. Maresh III; father, Henry B. Font Jr.; brothers, Henry B. Font III, John F. Font and Robert Font; and sister, Jennifer Font. Visitations were held in Houston and in San Antonio. MARY JOYCE NELSON
Mary Joyce (Johnston) Nelson, was born June 16, 1949, and passed away Dec. 4, 2002, after a long illness.
She is survived by her three children, Kimberly Nelson of Austin, Cody and Sara of San Antonio, two grandsons; parents Richard and Carol Johnston of San Antonio; sister Jeanette Duvall of Kerrville; brother John Johnston of San Antionio; step-brother Kinny Simon of Kingsland; step-sisters Gwen Kirk and Roxana Weaver of Kyle, and several nieces and nephews.
Family services were held Saturday, Dec. 7.
MONTIE THOMPSON
Montie Ray (West) Thompson, beloved mother, grandmother and sister, was born Feb. 7, 1930, to John and Maud West in Austin. She died Dec. 3, 2002.
After graduating from Austin High School in 1948, she married and had two daughters.
Her daughters remember her as a loving mother devoted to the happiness of her children. Montie was involved in every part of her girls’ lives, including volunteering at schools and assuring that they attended Sunday school and church at Highland Park Baptist.
Montie was a lifelong resident of Austin. She volunteered in her community and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, garden club and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Montie’s research into her family history lead to the discovery that she was a sixth-generation Texan and a descendant of a hero from the Battle of the Alamo. She was also commissioned by The State of Texas as Yellow Rose of Texas for her historical contributions to the LBJ Library.
Her parents, her brother Harvey West, and sisters-in-law Edith West and Verdella West preceded her in death.
Montie leaves her two daughters, Karen Bullard of Fort Worth and Sandra Wettig and her husband Dan of San Antonio. Her four grandchildren are Erin Bullard, and Brad, Amanda, and Christopher Wettig. She also leaves her sister Maurice and husband Roy Boatman of Cedar Park; her brother Charles (Bootie) West of Austin, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Highland Park Baptist Church, 5206 Balcones Drive in Austin, with Rev. Dan DeLeon officiating. Montie was laid to rest at Austin Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were her son-in-law Dan Wettig, nephew Johnny West and family friends, Dr. Carroll Nanney, Wayne Howard Lott, David Lott, and O.B. (Trey) McKown.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
