She was a beloved teacher. A graduate of Humble High School, Mrs. Arnold attended Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in Huntsville, where she received her teaching certificate. She furthered her education at University of Houston. After years of teaching according to the need of the school system in Danbury, Mrs. Arnold became the elementary school music teacher in Angleton, where she served for 19 years. She was famous for the spring music festivals in which she insisted every child in the elementary school system should participate. These extravaganzas were the highlight of many children’s early years of education.
As wife of County Judge Alton C. Arnold, Gladys served the County in many ways; especially during time of civil emergency. She volunteered with the Red Cross Disaster team during hurricanes and flooding. She served as hostess for social events, and all the while continued her teaching career.
Gladys Arnold was a founding member of the Angleton-Danbury Hospital Auxiliary and a founding member of the Retired Teacher’s Association. She served for 40 years as pianist/organist at First Baptist Church of Angleton, taught Vacation Bible School, and she was also a member of the Women’s Study Club and Embroidery Club of Angleton. She served for years as a Docent at the Brazoria County Historical Museum.
For the past 6 1/2 years, Mrs. Arnold has been a resident of local nursing home, where she made many friends and in spite of the incapacities of her stroke managed to always muster a smile and friendly pat on the hand for others. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by two children, Dr. W. Perry Arnold of Baltimore, Maryland and Rev. Carolyn Arnold Markham of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Grandchildren include Jon Arnold, Derek Arnold, Ronald Roberts, Claudia Metting, David Burks, Nancy Andrews, and Catherine Stefano; and as well as nine great-grandchildren.
