G.L. 'BUBBA' ROUSE

George Leonard "Bubba" Rouse, 73, of Angleton, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002 at the Angleton Danbury Medical Center.
He was born in Moss Point, Mississippi, on February 22, 1929 to Alberta Ricker Rouse and Patrick Rouse.
Bubba, as friends knew him, grew up in Moss Point, graduated high school in 1947, and attended Perkingston Junior College in Mississippi, on a football scholarship.
He moved to Texas, in 1950, and married Ann Curry, and they lived in Angleton. Bubba and Ann had three children, John Kimberly Rouse, Dana Roxanne Rouse, and Suzanne Rayne Rouse.
In 1985, he married Marcelene Rhoden of Cleveland, Texas.
Bubba was a jack-of-all-trades before entering the public service arena. He began his career path in Moss Point, at the age of 14. When the men went off to war, he and his buddies went to work, and wound up running the show at the local paper mill. After moving to Texas, he worked from Beaumont, to Angleton, laying pipelines and doing drainage work. He worked in the pipeline division at Dow Chemical Company. He started his own pest control business, Killum Pest Control, in the mid-1960s, and he read water meters for the city and wound up as the City Water Superintendent.
He spent 28 years in politics and public service. Those years include 10 years on the Angleton City Council, (8 years as Mayor Pro-tem during that time), 6 years on the Brazos River Harbor Navigation District (2 years as chairman), 12 years as Brazoria County Commissioner for Precinct 2.
The common thread in all of his endeavors was people. He loved people, and loved doing things for others. He would sooner walk straight through a room full of dignitaries to shake a working man's hand than to spend time with anyone self-important. To him, status was nothing - a good heart was everything. He taught us all how to move forward, but in moving forward to always look behind you to see who you could lend a hand to.
Bubba was raised in the Kreole Methodist Church in Moss Point, was a deacon and an elder for the First Presbyterian Church of Angleton, then joined the First United Methodist Church in Angleton. He was an active member of the First United Methodist, heading up committees and organizing activities for the benefit of others. He loved the church, and supporting their youth activities.
Bubba coached Little League baseball in Angleton during the '60s and '70s, was a volunteer fireman in Angleton for many years, was an Angleton Chamber of Commerce member, member of the National Democratic Party - though he always supported the best person for the office regardless of party affiliation. He was an active member in the American Quarter Horse Association, and enjoyed a natural knack in picking horses that led to a successful racing career.
His parents and second wife, Marcelene Rhoden Rouse, preceded him in death.
He is survived by son, Kim Rouse of Angleton, Roxanne Rouse of Austin, Suzanne Rouse Saxon and husband, Mike and stepdaughter, Erika of Dallas; step-children Marcella McClain and husband, Jeff of Cleveland, Texas, Susan Bergman and husband, Louis of Cleveland, Doug Rhoden and wife, Denna of Shephard, and Jennifer Rhoden of Conroe, and eight step-grandchildren, and many cousins and relatives.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2002 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at 10 a.m. at The First United Methodist Church in Angleton. He will be transported to Moss Point, Mississippi for family services later in the week.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church for benefit of the children's program, His Kids.
Arrangements by Palms Funeral Home, Angleton, Texas.

J.P. DANSBY

J.P. Dansby, 81, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at his home in Lake Jackson. He is survived by Roberta S. Dansby, his wife of 52 years; daughter, Joy Dansby, Houston; son, Brian, and wife Charleen, Lake Jackson; sister, Edna Williams, Lake Jackson; nieces, Pat Pilkington of San Antonio, Sylvia Sheffield of The Woodlands, and Helen Todd of Plano; nephews, Tom Heckman of Dallas, Grady Dansby and son, Daniel of Lake Jackson.
J.P. was born in Turnersville, Texas, on Jan. 25, 1921 to Cecil and Fannie Maye Dansby. The family moved to El Campo, where he attended school. During World War II, he was a corporal in the U.S. Army, winning several medals for marksmanship. He was stationed at Matagorda Island, in Texas. He next attended the University of Houston, receiving a BS degree in Music Education in 1950. While at UH, he met and married a fellow student, Roberta Sisson. He served as the assistant to the concessions manager at Buff Stadium, the home of Houston's minor league baseball team. In 1950, J.P. and Roberta moved to Lake Jackson, where he began work in the accounting department at Dow Chemical. He retired from Dow in 1984. Also during this period, he taught music in the Columbia-Brazoria School District for 11 years. He was interested in community affairs and was an active member of the Jaycees, the Men's Garden Club, and the Brazosport Little Theater. He continued his interest in music as a member of the First United Methodist Church choir, and as a Houston Grand Opera season ticket holder. Through these interests, he became acquainted with Howard Brock, who would become his close friend, ski partner and travel companion. His passion for skiing resulted in the Dansbys choosing Innsbruck, Austria, as their second home during retirement. While skiing was his choice for personal participation, it was to UH athletics that he gave his ardent support.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences, First United Methodist Church of Lake Jackson, Hospice Care Team (107 W. Way, Suite #29, Lake Jackson), or SPCA of Brazoria County.
Visitation to celebrate J.P.'s life will be held at the Lakewood Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 9 from 5 to 7 p.m.
