Dorothy Harris Cook
Dorothy Harris Cook of Cuero, formerly of Victoria, died December 25, 2005.
She was born January 14, 1914 in Cuero, Texas, to the late Don M. and Verna H. Harris. Dorothy graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1930 at the age of 16. She graduated from Westmoreland Academy in San Antonio, (now Trinity University) at the age of 18. Her first teaching assignment was in Taft, Texas, where she met her late husband Enoch H. Cook, also a teacher in Taft. Dorothy stopped teaching after the birth of her first child and did not return to the field until her youngest was in Junior High. When Victoria Independent School started the Adult Education Program she was one of the first teachers. She was the first Director of the Adult Guidance Center that was started in the late 60s. Dorothy was very proud of her students who acquired their GEDs under her guidance. She was also very proud of her students who were taught English as a second language. In the early 1970s, VISD began a program for pregnant students who wished to remain in school. This was her final teaching assignment before retiring.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Enoch H. Cook; her parents; two brothers, Don M. Harris Jr. and Jack Harris; and one son, Enoch H. (Jack) Cook Jr.
She is survived by one sister, Leigh Cunningham of Vancouver, Washington; a son, Don Cook and wife Rosemary of Georgetown; two daughters, Sue Cook Halbert and Janice Cook Wilson and husband Chuck of Cuero; five grandchildren, R. Wade and wife Jennifer Berger Wilson of Brenham, Douglas and wife Melissa Luker Wilson of Pearland, Gregory Cook of Houston, Marion Cook of Georgetown, and Emily Halbert Peppers and husband Joe of Seguin. She is also survived by her three great-grandchildren, Hadlee, Hays, and Harper Wilson of Brenham; four nieces, Jo Nell Hammond of Nederland, Cyndi Dawson of Vancouver, Washington, Susan Harris of Palo Alto, California, and Betsy Gerdemann of Boise, Idaho.
Also, the family would like to acknowledge with thanks and appreciation her primary caregivers and friends to the family Callie Williams, Lucretia Austin, and Maria Acosta.
Enoch and Dorothy left behind a legacy of love, honesty, acceptance of others and the value of education.
Visitation was Tuesday, Dec. 27 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. The graveside service was at Memorial Hill Cemetery in Austin, on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. under the direction of Freund Funeral Home.

Mary Lee Hobbs
Mary Lee Hobbs, 82, of Big Spring, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006.
She was born Jan. 7, 1924 in Murchison and married Roy Hobbs on March 9, 1942 in Tyler. She was a member of the Western Drifters, Triple L (Live Longer and Love It), and the Baptist Temple.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Royce June Underwood of Andrews and Paula Ann Stiles of Stanton; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son; six brothers; and four sisters.
Services were Monday, Jan. 23 at Nalley-Pickle and Welch Rosewood Chapel, Rev. Sil Moore of Lubbock officiated. Internment followed at Trinity Memorial Park under the direction of Nalley-Pickle and Welch Rosewood Chapel of Big Spring.

Walter F. Luthy
Walter F. (Slim) Luthy, 88, of Cuero, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at the Hallettsville Rehab and Nursing Center.
Slim was born May 23, 1917, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Simon and Gudren Luthy. He served as a P-47 fighter pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of the 315th Fighter Squadron, 324th Fighter Group. On his 54th mission, he was shot down over Landstuhl, Germany, and was held as a prisoner of war in Germany until the end of the war. Slim worked as a crop duster until he moved to Cuero, where he opened a welding shop. After closing the shop, he joined the maintenance staff of the Cuero Independent School District until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Vernice E. Luthy of Hallettsville; son, John F. Luthy and wife Johnnie of Boise, Idaho; step-sons, Sidney W. Kent and wife Lorraine of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Grayson L. Sellers and wife Cynthia of Los Fresnos, Texas; daughters, Sheryl Jones and husband David of Lake Lotawana, Missouri, and Virginia Warzecha and husband Marvin of Hallettsville; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Slim was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Richard F. Luthy, and sister, Virginia Taylor, all of Kansas City, Missouri.
Services were Sunday, Jan. 22 at the Freund Funeral Home Chapel in Cuero, Rev. Toby Brown officiated. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery under the direction of Freund Funeral Home. 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers: Carl "Bubba" West, Noah Sellers, Benjamin Pena, Dustin Sellers, John Paul Luthy, and Steven Warzecha.
Honorary Pallbearer: Airman Brandon Wolter.

Mary Peavy
Mary Peavy, 94, of Austin, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006.
She was born Oct. 26, 1911 to the late John Ideus and Marie Wohlert. She was a medical clerk/LVN for the Texas Department of MHMR and a member of the Central Presbyterian Church in Austin.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Charles Peavy.
Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 26 at Freund Funeral Home from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Greg McDonell of Central Presbyterian Church in Austin officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery under the direction of Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Memorials: Central Presbyterian Church in Austin.

Rollie Simon
Rollie Simon, 76, of Cuero, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006. He was born March 3, 1929, in Cuero, to the late Rollie and Della Gabrysch Simon. Rollie was a cattle rancher, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, a member of the American Legion Dinter Post 3, and worked for the O'Connor Cattle Co.
Surviving Mr. Simon are a sister, Laurie Chiros of Cuero, and a brother, T.C. and wife Erna Lee Simon of Cuero; nephew, Ted and wife Sandra Simon; great-nephew, Shane and wife Kathy Simon of Cuero; great-niece, Tina Simon of Houston and great-great niece Sarah Simon; and great-great nephews, Kaden and Triton Simon.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Gayden.
Visitation was Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Father Kirby Hlavaty officiated. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, under the direction of Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers: Ed Wagner, Steve Hebert, Ronnie Slovacek, Larry Dierlam, Robert Gohlke, and Norvan Eichholz.
Honorary pallbearers: Joe Sheppard, Donald Duncan, Robert Zaiontz, Bill Zaiontz, Jim Crain, Vincent Warzecha, and William Hedges.
Memorial: St. Michael's Catholic Church or donor's choice.

Tomasita Vela
Tomasita Vela, 66, of Yorktown, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006.
She was born Jan. 3, 1940, in Yorktown, to the late Jose and Teofila Longoria Esparza. She was a homemaker and a member of San Luis Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Herminia Vela, Rosanna Vela, Maricela Vela, Miquela Dennison, Esther Vela, and Corina Vela, all of Yorktown, Stella Vela of Hallettsville, and Christina Davidson of North Carolina; sons, Rosendo Vela of Victoria, Romauldo Vela of Yorktown, and Rapheal Vela of Cuero; sisters, Anita Marin of Levelland, Susie Valdez and Rosita Neace, both of Alvin, and Frances Hunter of Lexington; brothers, Domingo Granado of Nordheim and Esteven Granado of Brownsville; and 16 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Juanita Granado and Pifania Granado; and brother, Felix Granado.
A vigil service was held Friday, Jan. 20 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Saturday at San Luis Catholic Church. Burial was at San Luis Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Troy D. Wieland
Troy Douglas Wieland, 51, of Yorktown, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006.
He was born June 28, 1954, in Cuero, to Helen Wieland of Yorktown and to the late Raymond Wieland. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jolene Wieland; daughter, LaRae Wieland of Yorktown; sons, Bradley Wieland and Travis Wieland, both of Katy; and brothers, Don Wieland of Yorktown and Bruce Wieland of Los Angeles.
Visitation was Sunday, Jan. 21 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Rev. Patti Byrne officiated. Burial was at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Leona Goode Allison
Leona Goode Allison, 97, died Jan. 27, 2006 at the Canterbury Center in Sheperdstown, West Virginia, where she had resided since March 1991.
Mrs. Allison was born March 15, 1908 in Osage, Colorado County, Texas. She was the youngest of four children and the only daughter of John “Jack” and Harriet Caroline “Hattie” Rankin Goode. Her three brothers, Johny, James Allen, and Robert Lee Goode predeceased her.
She married Carl Pierpont Allison in 1930. Her husband took a job with Standard Oil of New Jersey in Maracaibo, Venezuela. She joined him in December 1934. Their only child was born in December 1935. Shortly thereafter, the family returned to America and settled in Corpus Christi, Texas. Her husband died in 1960. in 1972, Leona moved to Charles Town, West Virginia, to reside with her daughter.
Survived by one daughter, Virginia Allison Jackson; son-in-law, Earl. L. Jackson, Jr.; two grandsons, Earl L. Jackson III of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Carl W. Jackson; Carl's wife Caroline; and two great-grandchildren, C. Austin and Alexandra C. Jackson of Berryville, Virginia.
Internment will be in Weimar, Texas, I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Local arrangements by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Donations in the memory of Mrs. Allison may be made to the Salvation Army.

Jonathan Ivey
Jonathan Lynn Ivey, 57, of Houston, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006.
He was born March 3, 1948 to the Mary Wildgrube and the late Lester Nash Ivey.
He is survived by his sisters Melva Ivey Beaman, Carol Ivey, Jo Anna Ivey, and Marice Ivey, all of Houston; and brothers, Aaron Ivey and Everett Ivey, both of Houston.
Visitation was Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services were Wednesday, Rev. Darwin Parrott officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery, under the direction of Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-3464.

Julia Mesa
Julia Tolinda Pineda Mesa, 82, of West St. Paul, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006.
She was born April 3, 1923, in Hallettsville, to the late Joseph and Juane Casarer Pineda. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her daughters, Vacelia Morris of Oakdale, Minnesota, Annie Corpus of Jacinto City, Vera Crider of Houston, and Mary J. Mesa of Falfurrias; sons, Eugene Mesa Jr. of Eagan, Minnesota, and Martin G. Ramos of Houston; sister, Mary Mesa of Cuero; brother, Frank Pineda of Yoakum; 13 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Mesa; and daughter, Rosemary Pineda.
Visitation was Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Buffington Funeral Home in Yoakum. Services were Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial followed at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Buffington Funeral Home, Yoakum, 361-293-2333.
Pallbearers: grandchildren, Raymond Morris, Wesley Morris, Roberto Corpus, Cleofus Corpus, Armanda Silva, Paul Luna.

Ima Shows
Ima Pearl "Duffy" Shows, 85, of Cuero, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2006.
She was born Aug. 12, 1920, in DeWitt County. She was a secretary for Texas Eastern and Cuero Housing Authority and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hochheim Community Club, and Cuero VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by her sisters, Irene Reynolds of Big Spring and Faye Boldt of Cuero; and brother, F. C. Shows of Hagerstown, Maryland.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Raymond Shows, Clifford Show, and Julius Shows.
Visitation was Friday, Jan. 27 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services were Saturday at Westside Cemetery, Rev. Toby Brown officiated. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Memorials: First Presbyterian Church in Cuero.
