Thomas M. Hensley

Thomas “Tommy” M. Hensley, 78, died on Monday, Feb. 12, 2001.
He was born on May 21, 1922 in Clinton. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II with the 43rd Bombardment Squadron as a teletype operator. He received an American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with two Bronze Stars.
A lifelong resident of Cuero, Mr. Hensley was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the Sons of Hermann, T.P.A., and the Cuero Masonic Lodge #409. After retirement from 36 years of service as dispatcher for the City of Cuero and the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Department, he continued to own and operate Tommy’s Saw Shop.
Mr. Hensley is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jurlyn; daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Fred Nashed of Canton, Massachusetts; son and daughter-in-law, Nelson and Julie Hensley of Houston; and grandogs, Rita and Peso. He will be remembered for his kind, caring and gentle spirit.
Visitation was held Tuesday at Freund Funeral Home Chapel from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Services will be Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. with Rev. Steve Byrne officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery under the direction of Freund Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.

William D. Peebles Sr.

William Donald Peebles Sr., 86, of Victoria, and formerly of Cuero, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001.
He was born April 13, 1915 to the late William Trigg and Ona Nichols Peebles. He worked as a hardware and janitorial supply salesman. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was a methodist.
Survivors: wife, Agnes Keseling Peebles of Victoria; daughter Sherra Louise Kowis of Houston; sons, William Donald Peebles, Jr. and Frank Peebles, both of Victoria; and grandchild, Kimberly Anne Nelson of Austin.
Proceeded in death by: parents; sister, Dorothy Allen.
Services were Friday at Freund Funeral Home chapel, the Rev. Tad Tadlock officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers: Lawrence Keseling, Edward Keseling, Blake Muir, Tony Allen, George Fisher, Jerome Wild and Earl Echols.
Honorary pallbearers: Arthur Wachtendorf, Paul Wachtendorf, Sean Crowe and Frank Spears.
Memorials: donor's choice.

Mary Edith Donnelly

Mary Edith Donnelly, 96, of Yoakum, died Monday, April 16, 2001.
She was born June 16, 1904, in Gonzales, to the late Antonio and Mary Mudd. She was a partical nurse, homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors: daughters, Margie Schindler and Mertes Culak, both of Yoakum, Sr. M. Lucilla Donnelly of Victoria, Erna Braden of Cuero, Theresa Bohne of Bay City and Etta Nugent of Houston; son, Lavern Donnelly of Angleton; 27 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Ernest Donnelly; daughters, Mary Alice Donnelly and Jo Ann Brehm; sisters, Cloia Harris and Ruth Hoffer; brothers, Herman Mudd, Ernest Mudd, Vernon Mudd, Leber Mudd and Troy Mudd; and one grandchild.
A rosary was recited. Wednesday at Buffington Funeral Home Chapel.
Services were Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Rev. Gary Janak officiating. Assisting were Fr. Daniel E. Giorgi and Deacon Leonard Harper.
Burial was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Buffington Funeral Home, Yoakum, was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers: Larry Donnelly, Michael Schindler, Billy BRaden, Christopher Culak, Darren Bohne and Michael Nugent.
Memorials: St. Joseph Parish Family Center Fund or donor’s choice.

Woodrow W. Coppedge, Sr.

Woodrow W. Coppedge, Sr., 88, of Sugarland and formerly of Cuero, died Friday, April 20, 2001.
He was born in DeWitt County November 20, 1912 to the late Will and Callie Nelms Coppedge. He was a cattleman and worked at the Cuero Livestock Commission Company for over 20 years. He was also a Catholic.
Survivors: daughter, Carol Ann Horan of Bakersfield, CA; son, Woodrow W. Coppedge Jr. of Sugarland; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.
Proceeded in death by: wife, Bessie Lanik Coppedge; parents; sisters, Olive O’Neal, Daisy Cunningham, May Will Steen, Joy Steen; brother, Finley “bud” Coppedge.
Funeral Services were Monday, April 23 at Freund Funeral Home, the Rev. Johnson Owusu-Boateng officiated. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery, Yoakum.
Pallbearers: Woody Coppedge, Bubba Coppedge, Jim Coppedge, Mark Coppedge, Lee Horan, Joe Payne.
Memorials: American Cancer Society.

Lydia Thieme

Lydia Thieme, 89, of Cuero, died Saturday, April 21, 2001.
She was born in Shiner on September 13, 1911 to the late Henry William and Emma Cook Flessner. She worked as a LVN Nurse. She also worked at Textile Mill in Cuero, Burns Hospital in Cuero, Retama Manor West, and as a greeter at Wal-Mart in Cuero. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
Survivors: daughter, Georgia Mae White of Wharton; son, Roland Thieme of Victoria; sister, Emma Stock of Cuero; brother, Edwin R. Flessner of Cuero; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Proceeded in death by: husband, J. C. Thieme Jr.; parents; sister, Erna Balzen; brothers, Henry F. Flessner, Leslie Flessner; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services were Tuesday, April 24 at Freund Funeral Home, the Rev. Steve Byrne officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens of Cuero Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Douglas Flessner, Kevin Thieme, Kenneth Thieme, Michael White, Randy Lane, Mark Wick.
Memorials: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Garland Wagenschein

Garland Wagenschein, died Sunday, April 22, 2001.

Mary Benavidez Garcia

Mary Benavidez Garcia, 67, of Cuero, died Thursday, April 19, 2001.
She was born Oct. 23, 1933, in Cuero, to the late Fernando and Estella Bowie Benavidez. She was a homemaker and a Catholic.
Survivors: husband, Juan Garcia Jr.; daughter, Janie Loya Cockerham of Killeen; sons, Max B. Loya and Eddy B. Loya, both of Houston, Lazaro B. Loya of Killeen and Bobby B. Loya of Corpus Christi; sisters, Isabel Aguilar of Houston, Angelita Sanchez of Victoria, Norma Rodriguez of El Campo and Estella Ramos of Pasadena; brothers, Ignacio Benavidez of Cuero, Joe Benavidez of Dallas and Fernando Benavidez of Victoria; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: sons, Manuel B. Loya and Rudy B. Loya; parents; brother, Ernesto Benavidez.
Services were Monday at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, the Rev. Victor Scocco officiating. Burial was at Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo. Artero Memorial Chapels, Victoria, 575-3212.
Pallbearers: Preston Loya, Richard Loya, Eddy Loya Jr., Lazaro Loya III, Alfonso Reynoso, Armando Vela and Issac Loya.

Merlin E. Loe

Merlin E. Loe, age 88, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 in a local Nursing home following a long illness. He was a cattleman, worked for the Carson Cattle Co. He was born in Gonzales County to Claude Lee and Uzetta Johnson Lee. He lived most of his life in the area of Cheapside.
Survivors: sister, Evelyn (Walter) Gill of Rio Ranch, New Mexico; sisters-in-law, Inez Lee and Lillian Lee, both of Three Rivers.
Services were Saturday in the Bellevue Cemetery at Cheapside. Roberson Funeral Home.

Sally V. Campbell

Sally Viola Campbell, 53, of Yorktown, died Sunday, June 17, 2001.
She was born April 24, 1948, in Yorktown, to the late Claudie Sr. and Dorothy Lee James Campbell. She was a cook for Yorktown ISD and a member of the Rising Star Baptist Church.
Survivors: daughter, Teresa Salazar of Yorktown; son, Willie Lewis Campbell of Yorktown; sisters, Lucille Campbell and Janet Campbell, both of Yorktown, Gloria Booker of Corpus Christi, Ruth Smith of Cuero and Alice Campbell of San Antonio; brother, Claudie "Junior" Campbell of Yorktown; and two grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: parents; sisters, Linda Campbell and Claudette Campbell; and brother, Louis Campbell.
Visitation was Wednesday at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home chapel. Services were Thursday at the chapel, the Revs. A.J. Ball and Paul Green officiated. Burial was at Upper Yorktown Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Wilmer F. Heinze

Wilmer Fred Heinze, 87, of Nordheim, died Friday, June 15, 2001.
He was born Dec. 19, 1913, in Nordheim, to the late Herman C. and Lillie Janssen Heinze. He was a member of Sons of Hermann in Nordheim and St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a farmer.
Survivors: wife, Ruth Carroll Steiger Heinze; daughter, Carroll Sue Williams of Houston; son, Herman Jake Heinze of Missouri City; sister, Lillian J. Musick of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: parents; and brother, Hayden Heinze.
Private services will be held at a later date. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.
