Benjamin P. "peewee" Pena
Death has taken your breath; the Lord has received your soul; But you'll always have our hearts.
God called Benjamin Pena home on March 26, 2002. He was born on June 29, 1949 in Yorktown. After graduating from Nordheim High School, he served in Vietnam where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. The horrors of war showed him the fragility of life so he dedicated himself to living his life to the fullest and dedicating himself to enhancing the lives of others. All who met him and many who didn't received the gift of kindness from this gentle soul. It was common knowledge that Ben's home was open to all; it served as a shelter for the homeless, animal rescue for strays, and a place where you could always find a warm meal, a listening ear, and friendship. He was a strong supporter of our community and never hesitated to organize fund raisers and, as a co-founder for the Capital City Queens, helped raised thousands of dollars for various charities in Austin.
In 1980, he met the person he could trust, love, respect and share the rest of his life with: Wayne Marion. The two enjoyed 21 years of a wonderful relationship and were blessed with one of the strongest bonds two people could ever hope to have.
Ben worked at Xerox and was a part time disc jockey at 'Bout Time. Music was one of his greatest joys and he had the uncanny knack of finding the silliest songs to share with his friends.
All his friends and family were entertained countless times with his talent for entertainment and humor.
Family and religion were extremely important to Ben. Whenever his family needed Ben, he would not hesitate to rush to their side to be there for them and offer his love and support. Ben had absolute faith in the Lord and every Tuesday, Ben could be found at mass. Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Pena and Ernest Pena Sr. He is survived by his life partner, Wayne Marion, brothers Ernesto Pena, Jr., Rudolph Pena, beloved aunt, Adella Pena, nephew, Michael Pena, nieces, Virginia Pena, Mande Pena and Crystal Pena, two great nephews and hundreds of members of his extended family.
Pallbearers are: Michael Pena, David Silvas, Joseph Martinez, Stephen Preuss, Jerry Ortiz, and Rudolph Pena.
Honorary pallbearers are: Jerry (C.C.) Young, Margo Cuellar, William King and Gregory Jaramillo.
Viewing was at Mission Funeral Home, 1615 East Cesar Chavez Street, Austin on Wednesday, March 27. A Rosary was said on Thursday at the funeral home. A Mass was held Friday at the funeral home. Internment followed the mass at Nordheim Cemetery in Nordheim.
