Cuero - Harry Hays Parker, age 83, died Monday, February 5, 2007. He was born in the Community of Chicolete, south of Cuero, on September 6, 1923, to Lottie Etta Alexander Parker and James Henry Parker, who later moved to the Stratton Community.
ELSIE M. WINDEL
Elsie May Day Windel, 87 of Cuero, died February 7, 2007. She was born November 25, 1919 in Burlington, North Carolina to D. Bradsher Day and Maude Stanfield Day. She served in the American Red Cross then joined the US Navy Nurse Corps during WWII. Elsie was a LT. Commander, received her nursing degree from Stewart Circle Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree, and Columbia University in New York with a Master's degree. She has served as a Public Health Nurse in Cuero Schools and the W.I.C. program. Many hours of volunteer service has been logged by Mrs. Windel in the Pilot Club projects, the Meals on Wheels program, and preparing food for distribution to the needy at C.A.M.A.L. House. Elsie was also a lifetime member of the VFW.

Herman Joseph Schaefer
Cuero - Herman Joseph Schaefer, died Thursday, March 29, 2007, at the age of 103 years and 5 days. He was born March 24, 1904, three miles west of Meyersville on the Schaefer Ranch to Charles and Annie Schaefer. He graduated from Cuero schools in 1924. Herman married Thelma Norene Baker on February 16, 1936. Thelma died January 4, 1994, in Cuero. He went to work for the Cuero Post Office in 1924 and retired after 42 years of dedicated service.
Patricia Hartman
Cuero - Patricia Jean Hartman, 54, passed away Mon., May 7, 2007. She was born Sept. 5, 1952, in Port Lavaca to Jerome and Henrietta Smesny Hlavaty.
She married Jeffery Hartman on Feb. 15, 1986. Patricia was a homemaker. She worked as a volunteer for DeWitt County Historical Society and for DeWitt County preserving court records. She was a member of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Meyersville.
She is survived by her father, husband, two sisters: Jeanette Hlavaty of Bay City and Caroline King of Cuero, three brothers: Donald Hlavaty of Joynerville, Jerome "Butch" Hlavaty, Jr. of Yorktown, and Stephen Hlavaty of Lampasses. She was preceded in death by her mother and brother: Larry Hlavaty.
Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, May 19, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Meyersville with Rev. Michael Petering officiating.

Cuero - Ingrid Mayer, 64, passed away Fri., May 11, 2007. She was born Mar. 4, 1943 in Darmstadt, Germany to Curtis and Katherine Dickenschied. She married Travis Mayer on Sept. 6, 1961, in Brownsville. She worked for Goliad ISD Cafeteria for over 16 years, and Goliad Tiger-Tote over 10 years. Ingrid was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Weesatchee.
Ingrid is survived by her mother: Katherine Holstater of Darmstadt, Germany, husband: Travis Mayer of Cuero, daughter: Robin Hoffer and husband Charles of Placedo, sons: Allen Wayne Mayer and wife Natalan of Vanderbilt, Michael Lane Mayer and wife Veronica of Victoria, and Darren Scott Mayer and wife Josie of Beeville, brother: Roland Holstater of Wichhausen, Germany, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father: Curtis Dickenschied, stepfather: Jacob Holstater and a son: Travis Roland Mayer.
Visitation was Sun., May 13, at Freund Funeral Home in Cuero. Funeral service was Mon., May 14, at Freund Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. C.B. Suggs officiating. Burial followed in Hillside Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Michael Lane Mayer, Darren Scott Mayer, Charles Hoffer, Sebastian Montano, Jesse Ybarra, Eddie Gutierrez. Honorary Pallbearers: Travis Mayer and Robin Hoffer.

Cuero - Joseph "Joe" Henry Burns, 80, passed away Fri., June 8, 2007. He was born Mar. 4, 1927, to Arthur and Helen Reuss Burns. Joe had a college degree in Business Administration. During WWII he was in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He had worked for 7-Up, and had been a member of the American Legion Dinter Post # 3, and Grace Episcopal Church.

Cuero - Stanislaus "Stanley" P. Drapalla, 80, passed away June 8, 2007. He was born Sept. 23, 1926 in Lindenau to Steven and Lucy Jane Dlugosch Drapalla. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Salvador Gonzales
Cuero - Salvador Gonzales, 82, passed away Thurs., June 7, 2007. He was born June 15, 1924, in Concrete, Texas to Leopado and Concepcion Loya Gonzales. He was educated in Cuero. He married Elida L. Cortez on Nov. 24, 1948, in Cuero. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a survivor of the USS Calhoun that was sunk by Japan off the coast of Okinawa. Mr. Gonzales worked as a butcher for Kelley Grocery Store, Wishert Refrigeration, as a Patient Greeter at Bohman Clinic and a Greeter for Wal-Mart. He was a Lifetime member of the Cuero VFW Post #3972, and also the American Legion Dinter Post #3.

Cuero - Helen Goodenough, 93, passed away Thurs., June 7, 2007. She was born Apr. 22, 1914, in Olustee, Oklahoma to George F. and Carey M. Markham Walden. She married Elbert F. Goodenough on June 25, 1939, in San Antonio.

Cuero - Faustine P. John, 83, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2007. She was born June 1, 1923 in Karnes County. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America. She was employeed by St. Michael's Rectory for several years before retiring.
Vastine Jones
Cuero - Vastine Jones, 89, passed away on Tues., June 5, 2007. He was born Mar. 7, 1918, in Muldoon, Texas to Thomas and Martha Campbell Jones. He married Lonie Mae Williams. The two of them shared numerous weekends together fishing. His late brother, Preston Jones, spent many hours hunting and fishing along the Guadalupe River. While no children were born to this union, he was warm and loving to those he met, especially the little ones. His primary profession was truck driving. He worked for John Cowey, Don Stiles and Gene Finney.

David Allan Goehring
Victoria - David Allan Goehring, 24, passed away June 18, 2007. He was born November 30, 1982, in Victoria to Allan and Darlene Buchhorn Goehring. He worked for Helmerich & Payne as a deckhand.
He is survived by his parents; sisters: Amanda Repka and husband Jason of Inez, Bridgette Schutz and husband Clayton of Victoria, and Carrie and Irene Goehring, of Victoria; grandparents: Raymond and Irene Goehring of Westhoff, and Weldon and Carrie Buchhorn of Lindenau; nephews and nieces: Dailyn, Kaleb, Jacob, Bryce and Rylie.
Visitation was Thursday, June 21, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rosary following. Funeral Services were held Friday, June 22, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Msgr. James Brunner officiating. Entombment will follow at Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers: John Beckner, John Schroeder, Matt Perkins, Josh Starnes, Jimmy Moeller, David Krenek, Jeremy Goehring, Thomas Diehl, and Roel Villegas. Honorary Pallbearers: Kenneth Buchhorn, Henry Buchhorn, Timothy Diehl, Joshua Buchhorn, Jeremy Buchhorn, Warren Buchhorn, Jordan Buchhorn, Joshua Goehring, Justin Schroeder, Dustin Angerstein, Neal Fanelli, Brad Richey, and Patrick Tassmore.
David was a beloved son, uncle, and the best brother ever. He loved to play baseball, fish, hunt, and have fun. He will be sorely missed by his loving family, girlfriend, Jamie Crenshaw, and many friends. We will never forget his bright eyes and forever smile.

Cuero - Jessie Lawrence (Williams) Edwards, 90, passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007. She was born June 20, 1917 in DeWitt County to Willis and Fannie Williams. She was married to Nathan Edwards. Mr. Edwards passed away in 1972. Mrs. Edwards was a homemaker.
Joseph Sheppard II
Cuero - Joseph "Joe" Lawrence Sheppard, II, 80, passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2007. He was born February 8, 1927, in Cuero to the late Constance Breeden Sheppard and Henry Fassett Sheppard, Sr. He graduated from Cuero High School and from the University of Texas at Austin. He married Rosemary Blackwell on February 14, 1953 in Cuero. He spent most of his career with Texas Eastern Transmission Corp, as a Senior Measurement Technician. He also engaged in ranching for many years. He was a former President and longtime member of the Cuero Gobbler Booster Club. He also served as President of the St. Michael's Parish Council. He was keenly interested in political affairs and was a proud member of the Democratic Party. He enjoyed golf, hunting, history, football and spending time with friends and relatives.

Newton Gohmert
Cuero - Newton George Gohmert, 88, passed away Friday, August 17, 2007. He was born May 23, 1919, in Ratcliffe, Texas to George William and Augusta Rabke Gohmert. He married Verna Lee Till on November 18, 1940, in Yorktown. Mr. Gohmert worked as a butcher for the Bohne Meat Market, and had been a beverage salesman for many years. He was a rancher in DeWitt County, and was an avid wolf hunter and member of the South Texas Wolf Hunters Association. He was a member of the Rabke United Methodist Church for 60 years.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, daughters: Joan Marie Flowers of Anchorage, Alaska, Janis Ann Pakebusch and husband Dennis of Cuero, sons: Donald "Don" W. Gohmert and wife Jo of Temple, Charles Wayne Gohmert and wife Susie of Mission Valley, Richard Alan Gohmert and wife Lindy of Cuero, and Michael Gohmert and wife Dell of Mission Valley, sister: Joyce Ann Klaus of Knippa, TX, 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Capitola Wilson and Alice Gohmert, brother: Preston Gohmert, and a grandson.
Visitation was Sunday, August 19 at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral service was held Monday, August 20, at Freund Chapel with Rev. Dale Kelley officiating. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Stephen Flowers, Todd Gohmert, Dustin Gohmert, Randall Gohmert, Clayt Gohmert, and Patrick Dionne. Honorary Pallbearers: Rafael Boza, Richard Boyer, Preston Gohmert, Jr., George Gohmert, Alan Klaus and Gary Klaus.
