Donna Faye Barfield Newsom

Donna Faye Barfield Newsom, 70, of Palacios, formerly of Cuero, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2004.
Donna was born Oct. 9, 1933, in Cuero to the late Willis and Nola Helms Barfield. She married James F. Newsom in Cuero on Aug. 25, 1951. She taught school in the Cuero I.S.D. for 11 years. She was owner/operator of The Wharf at Schicke Point on Carancahua Bay. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Cuero.
She is survived by her husband, James Newsom of Palacios; a son, Wade Newsom and wife, Shelley; two daughters, Rachel Sheppard and husband, Henry, of Victoria and Becky Newsom and husband, Scott Madison, of Hoboken, New Jersey; and grandchildren, Justin Sheppard and Randy Newsom.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Willis Breeden Sheppard; and two half-sisters, Audrey Blackwell and Dick Bishop.
Services were Saturday, June 5 at Calvary Baptist Church, the Rev. Bill Gleason officiated. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery under the direction of Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Memorials may be given to The Willis Breeden Sheppard Memorial Mission Scholarship Fund (make contributions to Willis Sheppard Memorial).

Ralph L. Huey

Ralph L. Huey, 77, of Cuero, died Sunday, June 6, 2004.
He was born in Avant, Oklahoma, on Oct. 22, 1926, to the late Jessie L. and Effie J. Stevenson Huey. He served in the Merchant Marines. He worked in the oilfield business as a consultant and operator. He was a member of the Men’s Prayer Breakfast Group, Lions Club, Hilltoppers, and an Adult Senior Sunday School Teacher. He was also a member of First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Kuecker Huey; daughters, Mary Jo Huey Robbins of Houston and Nancy Lou Huey Kanter of Brazoria; son, Jimmy Mac Huey of Nigeria; sister, Louise Deaver of Skiatook, Oklahoma; brother, A. R. “Mickey” Huey of Bishop; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Virginia Brouchoud; and brothers, Carly Huey and Clyde Huey.
Visitation was Tuesday, June 8 at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be Wednesday, June 9 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Cuero, with Revs. John Kuecker and Glenn Robertson officiating. Burial will be at Lindenau Cemetery, Lindenau. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Virgil P. Warzecha

Virgil "Shorty" P. Warzecha, 62, of Westhoff, died Saturday, June 5, 2004.
He was born Aug. 23, 1941, in Yorktown, to the late T. J. and Mary Dworaczyk Warzecha. He was a retired trucker driver with Cal-Maine Foods in Flatonia. He was a rancher and past president of the Nixon-Smiley Stock Show Board and a member of the Nixon-Smiley Athletic Booster Club. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.
Survivors: wife, Linda Bruns Warzecha; daughter, Anita Respondek of Bossier City, Louisiana; sons, Lester Warzecha of Smiley and Stephen Warzecha of Westhoff; brother, Stanley Warzecha of Victoria; and four grandchildren.
A rosary was recited Monday, June 7 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Tuesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiated. Burial was at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Memorials: St. Jude Children's Hospital or Bluebonnet Youth Ranch.

Caroline J. Pilsner

Caroline J. Pilsner, 89, of Nordheim, died Sunday, July 18, 2004.
She was born Aug. 10, 1914, in Westhoff, to the late Fred and Elizabeth Uhl Konrad. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Ann Catholic Church.
Survivors: son, Marvin Pilsner of Nordheim; sister, Adelheid Pfeifer of Nordheim; and two grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Edwin Pilsner; sisters, Emma Adickes, Elsie Monk, and Minnie Hahn; brothers, Randolph Konrad, Adolph Konrad, John Konrad, Henry Konrad, Paul Konrad, Paul Konrad, Willie Konrad, Emil Konrad, and Arnold Konrad.
A rosary was recited Wednesday, July 21 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Thursday at St. Ann Catholic Church. Burial was at Nordheim Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.
Pallbearers: Ron Pilsner, Bearl Croft, Leroy Hahn, Don Konrad, Melvin Adickes, and Wilfred Konrad.

Horace Brown Jr.

Horace Brown Jr., 61, of Yorktown, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004.
He was born June 21, 1943, in Yorktown, to Fannie Mae Bean Brown of Yorktown and the late Horace Brown Sr. He was a Baptist.
Survivors: sisters, Anna Bert Brown, Mary Bell Brown, and Catherine Brown, all of Yorktown, and Carol Brown Cunningham of Cuero; and brothers, Jimmie Lee Brown of Victoria, Charlie Brown and Allen Ray Brown, both of Beeville, Albert Lee Brown and Johnnie Brown, both of Yorktown, and Robert Joe Brown Sr. of Yoakum.
Preceded in death by: stepson, Horace Barnes; and brother, Louis Brown.
Visitation was Friday, July 23 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Saturday at the funeral home. Burial was at Yorktown Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Jim DeBrock

Jim DeBrock, 82, of Carthage, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004.
He was born June 4, 1922 of Groesbeck to the late David Barron and Maudie Mae Sheets DeBrock. He married Ann Hill Bates in Carthage on Jan. 22, 1977. He was a watchmaker and jeweler, working for Kennedy’s Jewelry in Nacogdoches for 24 years. He also worked for Cox’s Jewelry in Carthage for 10 years. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge #354 in Groesbeck for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margie DeBrock, and parents.
He is survived by wife, Ann Bates DeBrock; son, John DeBrock and wife Judy of Madisonville; daughters, Kathy Phillips and husband Dr. Michael Phillips of San Antonio, and formerly of Cuero, and Patsy Hill and husband Darrell of Huntington; sister, Doris House of Carthage; stepsons, Scotty Bates and wife Luellyn and Don Bates and wife Margaret, all of Carthage; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation was Wednesday, July 21 at Lipsey Family Funeral Home in Carthage. Services were Thursday at the funeral home chapel, Bro. Rick Linebarger officiated. Graveside services followed at Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches. Lipsey Family Funeral Home, Carthage, 903-694-2211.

Mamie Castro

Mamie "Grandma" Castro, 79, of Westhoff, died Sunday, July 18, 2004.
She was born in San Antonio on Sept. 19, 1924 to the late Jose and Manuela Montez. She worked as a housekeeper and in her later years at Torres Grocery Store in Westhoff.
She is survived by daughters, Rebecca Calvillo and Irma Pritchard, both of San Antonio, and Linda Torres of Westhoff; sons, Johnny Castro, David Castro, and Joe Castro, all of San Antonio; sisters, Delores Cruz, Mary Ruth Schultz, and Beatrice Rodriguez, all of San Antonio; brother, Joe Montez of San Antonio; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Juan Franco Castro; sister, Inez Montez; and brother, Raymond Montez.
Visitation was Tuesday, July 20 at Freund Funeral Home. A prayer service was also held Tuesday. Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 21 at 10 a.m., with Rev. Dan Cancino officiating. Burial will be at Westhoff Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Miles Travis Wilson

Miles Travis Wilson, 21, passed away July 18, 2004.
Miles was the grandson of Dee Henneke and the late Harry Henneke of Cuero. He graduated from Klein Oak High School in 2000 and had attended Sam Houston State University. He was employed as a Systems Network Administrator for Montgomery County Title Company in The Woodlands.
Miles is also survived by his mother, Elizabeth Boenig and husband Robert of College Station; father, Buford Wilson and wife Doretta of Tomball; great-grandmother, Minnie Rosenberg of San Antonio; aunt, Terri Henneke Theis and husband Terry of Harper; and uncles, Mark Henneke of Gonzales, James Wilson and family and Curtis Wilson and family.
Services were Thursday, July 22, in the chapel of Klein Funeral Home, Klein. There was a private committal service in the Klein Memorial Park 249.

R. Blair James

R. Blair James, 77, of Cuero, died Sunday, July 11, 2004.
He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on April 17, 1927 to the late Parrie James and John S. James. Blair grew up in Corpus Christi, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and graduated from Southwestern University in 1948 where he was in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He married Carey Jane Turner on May 14, 1949 and began a 50 year career in the oil and gas drilling industry, retiring to ranching in 1990. Blair loved the outdoors and was an avid golfer, tennis player, hunter and fisherman.
Survivors are Carey James, Gail James, Bobby James, Brad James, and wife, Janet James; foster son, David Dodds; grandchildren, Blair James III, Erin James, Turner James, and Caroline James; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Bill Hartley; nephews, Dennis and Doak Hartley; and niece, Marsha Frary.
Visitation was Friday, July 16 at First Presbyterian Church in Cuero. Services were also held Friday at the church, the Rev. Toby Brown officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers: Dr. Bryant Boutwell, Lee Adair, Dennis Hartley, Doak Hartley, Doug Dougherty, and Robert Oliver.
Honorary Pallbearers: Bill Hartley, Dr. Reeves Smith, Jackie Sharp, Marvin Chancellor, Clarence Green, Roy Moore, Bill Boutwell, Bill Sherman, Jake Gasaway, Billy C. Foster, Claire Foster, and Joe Sheppard.

Justin W. Rogers

Justin Wayne Rogers, 18, of Cuero, died Sunday, July 18, 2004.
He was born March 18, 1986 in Cuero to James Johnson of Victoria and Mary Rogers Stubbs of Cuero. He worked in the Oil Field for Frontier Services, Inc.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Mary (Rogers) and Mike Stubbs of Cuero; father and stepmother, James and Cheryl Johnson of Victoria; sisters, Michelle Scarbrough of Smiley, Rachel Johnson and Lauren Johnson of Victoria, and Ashley Stubbs of Dallas; brothers, M. P. Scarbrough of Smiley, Vance Stubbs and Kyle Stubbs of Victoria, and Cody Stubbs of Cuero; maternal grandparents, Tommy and Bernice Rogers of Cuero; paternal grandparents, William and Shirley Johnson of Schroeder; and step-paternal grandparents, E. F. and Ann Schorre of Cuero.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 21 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with Larry Odom officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
