Santos I. Flores Sr.
Santos Ignacio Flores Sr., 67, of Cuero, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005.
He was born Feb. 1, 1937, in Cuero, to the late Geraldo and Guadalupe Buenos Flores. He was employed in the ranching industry.
Survivors: wife, Manuella Flores; daughters, Carmelita Barbontine of Refugio and Rosie Salas of Yoakum; sons, Martin Flores, Sisto Flores, and Santos Flores Jr., all of Cuero; sisters, Petra Aleman of Victoria, Gorgornia Flores of Houston, and Maria Munoz of Yorktown; brothers, Marcus Flores and Julian Flores, both of Cuero; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: parents; sister, Guadalupe Lopez; brother, Loranzo Flores.
A prayer service was held Monday, Jan. 31 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Tuesday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, the Rev. Dan Cancino officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Magdaline “Vahalik” Ebner
Magdaline “Vahalik” Ebner, 86, of Yoakum, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005.
She was born in Lavaca County on Sept. 6, 1918 to the late Emil and Frances Wick Hermes. She was a housewife, retired nurse’s aid, and rancher. She was a member the Sweet Home VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Yoakum Hospital Auxiliary, and Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Cyr and Nelda Kaiser, both of San Antonio, Sarah Hamilton of Coppell, Joyce Holster of Stafford, Barbara Ward, Emily Drozd, and Mary DeBord, all of Yoakum; sons, Edmund Vahlik, David Vahalik, And Charles Vahalik, all of Yoakum; step-son, Phillip Ebner of San Diego, California; step-daughter, Debbie Ebner of Hayward, California; sisters, Lelia Faye Hermes of Hallettsville and Lillie Mae Janak of Sweet Home; brothers, Ernest Hermes of Hallettsville and Ervin Hermes of Olivia; 23 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ed. R. Vahalik Jr. and Robert “Boots” Ebner; parents; sister, Evelyn (Missy) Linnsteader; and brother, Julius “Fritz” Hermes.

Mildred Sager
Mildred Sager of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, following a brief illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John C. and Estella Hans Sager; one brother; and one sister.
She is survived by her twin brother, Fred M. Sager and his wife, Marjorie; sister, Margaret S. Conrad, and her husband, Jim. Survivors also include her beloved nieces and nephews.
Mildred was a faithful member of Christ Lutheran Church, San Antonio, where she served on the Altar Guild and was a greeter. She enjoyed playing bridge and had a love for flowers and animals.
A family visitation will be held Saturday, Feb. 5 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home, Cuero. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 7, 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 6720 Broadway, San Antonio.

Robbie L. “Grandma” Verner
Graveside services for Robbie L. “Grandma” Verner, 67, of Gladewater, were Friday, Jan. 21 at Friendship Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Croley Funeral Home of Gladewater.
Mrs. verner was born Dec. 31, 1937 in Gladewater and passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19 in Longview. She was a medical records clerk for Good Shepherd Home Health and a Baptist.
She is survived by her mother, Classie Ford of Gladewater; three sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Joy Verner of Gladewater, Gary and Valerie Verner of Cuero, and Kevin and Tammi Verner of Bonham; sister, Claudine Garland of Longview; grandmother, Julia Odom of Gladewater; eight grandchildren, Kristie Madden, Joshua Verner, Kyle B. Verner, Kelli Verner, Kyle E. Verner, Katie Towery, Corey Verner, and Ashley Verner; and five great-grandchildren, Christin, Cagen, Trinity, Madison, and Austin Ray.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Claude Ford, and infant twins, Terry and Jerry Verner.
Honorary pallbearers were Joshua Verner, Kyle B. Verner, Kyle E. Verner, Corey Verner, Randy Madden, and Josh Chaput.

Jessie Thomas Shults
Jessie Thomas Shults died Jan. 9, 2005, at age 87 after a brief illness.
Jessie Goree Thomas was born on June 16, 1917 in Navasota, Texas. She married Thomas N. Shults in 1938 and supported his career while raising three sons. After spending 12 years in New Jersey, she returned to Fort Worth in 1959 when her husband was promoted to the presidency of Mid-Continent Supply Company. His business success was a joint venture in which she played a key role. Upon retirement, they divided their time between Green Valley, Arizona and Baja, California, returning to take up full time residence in Cuero, Texas in 1988; her husband died in 1997. She was a world-class seamstress, big game fisherwoman, hostess, and Blackjack devotee.
Survivors include sons, Thomas and Robert; sister, Anna; brother, Bill; and six grandchildren. A third son, Sidney, preceded her in death as did a seventh grandchild.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. at the graveside in Hillside Cemetery with Brick Hodge officiating under the direction of Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Ellen Sager
Ellen Sager, 93, of Arneckeville died Jan. 20, 2005.
She was born on Nov. 30, 1911 to the late C. A. Henry and Mary Schorlemmer Sager. She spent much of her adult life as a caregiver for her aging parents and a semi-invalid sister. Later she worked as a sitter in the local hospital and in individual homes. Ellen was very active in her church, Zion Lutheran of Arneckeville, serving as organist for over 60 years, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, serving on various committees, and participating in the activities of the Women of the ELCA.
Survivors are her sisters, Ruth Egg of Meyersville and Frieda Bade of Cuero; numerous nieces and nephews and their families; and personal caregiver, Sylvia Rodriguez.
She was preceded in death by sister, Lina Koehler, Leona Sager, and Welma Sager; and brothers, Edwin Sager, Paul Sager, Oscar Sager, and Lenard Sager.
Visitation was Friday, Jan. 21 at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral services were Saturday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Arneckeville, the Rev. Steve Byrne officiated. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Rita Marie Bluntzer
Rita Marie Bluntzer, 75, of Cuero, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005.
She was born on Sept. 30, 1929 in Galahad, Alberta, Canada, to Michael R. and Rosa Maria Kuefler Muyres. She was married in 1949 to Morris C. Bluntzer of Yorktown, Texas. He passed away in 1997.
Rita’s first love was being a homemaker. She also worked as a checker in grocery stores and was a beauty consultant for Avon, working and selling their products for 15 years. She also loved doing crafts and crocheting. She would find old dolls in garage sales, clean them up, make new clothes for them and then resell them in craft shows or just give them away. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and belonged to the Altar Society, being chairperson of the Easter baskets for 10 years and making flowers for the baskets since 1970. She also belonged to Yorktown VFW Auxiliary and Cuero Fire Department Auxiliary. She also helped her husband take care of the cattle at the ranch for over 20 years.
Rita is survived by one son, Daryl James Bluntzer of Cuero; two grandchildren, Kelly Haines and Kristopher Bluntzer; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Mason, and Montana Haines; and brothers and sisters, Urban, Donald, Laverne, Leona, Kathleen, Donna, Celina, and Delores, all of Alberta, Canada.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin Bluntzer; and brothers, Raymond, Eugene, and Paschal.
A rosary was recited Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Freund Funeral Chapel. The funeral was Thursday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiated. Burial was a Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Meyersville.

Johnny Fay Maxey
Johnny Fay Maxey, 66, of Cuero, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005.
He was born Jan. 14, 1938, in Cuero, to Mabel Stewart Maxey of Cuero and the late John Maxey. He was a brick mason in the construction industry.
Survivors: daughters, Diane Campbell and Linda Anderson, both of Pasadena; son, Johnny Ray Maxey of Pasadena; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Edwin H. Thieme
Edwin H. Thieme, 96, of Cuero, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2005.
He was born July 3, 1908 in Arneckeville to the late William and Eliza Barbara Arnecke Thieme. He married Lucille Hartman on Dec. 19, 1933. He drove the school bus and worked maintenance for the Meyersville and Cuero school districts. He was a rancher and a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Arneckeville.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Hartman Thieme; daughter, Nita Pakebusch of Cuero; son, Larry Thieme of Cypress, Texas; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, and one brother.
Visitation was Saturday, Jan. 15 at Freund Funeral Home in Cuero. Funeral services were Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church in Arneckeville, Rev. Daniel Zellmer officiated. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
