Rosemary Kibbe Breeden Kokernot
Aug. 1, 1919 – Jan. 4, 2005
Rosemary Kibbe Breeden Kokernot, wife of the late Frederick David Kokernot Jr., a prominent South Texas Rancher, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005 at the age of 85.
A Cuero native, Mrs. Kokernot was the daughter of Charles Goodwin Breeden and Mabel Claire Hall. Mr. Breeden was a founder and President of Breeden Runge Wholesale Grocery Co., and one of the builders of the Breeden Bros. Grocery Co. building that still graces Main Street today. Mrs. Kokernot was the sister of the late Mabel Claire Breeden Bell, wife of former state legislator and U.S. Congressman John Bell.
Mrs. Kokernot attended boarding school at Our Lady of the Lake and later at Incarnate Word High School in San Antonio. She subsequently received a Bachelors degree in Home Economics from the University of Texas at Austin and later returned to earn a Masters degree in Nutrition from the same institution. She later taught at Victoria College and Cuero High School.
She was a lifelong member of Grace Episcopal Church and saw her children and grandchildren baptized there. She was also active in the Junior League, the Colonial Dames, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Proud of her family's history and heritage, Mrs. Kokernot lovingly restored and lived for many years in the historic Heaton House on Terrell Street in Cuero that her father had purchased in 1924. A classic example of southern classical architecture, the home is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Mrs. Kokernot loved to entertain her many friends and carried on the tradition of warm and gracious hospitality for which her family was known.
No mention of Mrs. Kokernot would be complete without mention of her two lifelong friends, Beulah Margaret McDougal and Emalee Hartman. Mrs. Kokernot fondly recalled in an oral history recorded with her daughter Joy, how she and Mrs. McDougal had first met at vacation Bible school at the age of 4 or 5 years old. Mrs. Hartman, among other things, was a business partner in a travel business that led both of them on many far-flung travels around the world.
Mrs. Kokernot is survived by her two daughters, Joy Kokernot of Lexington, Kentucky, and Gay Kokernot Ratliff and her husband Shannon Harrison Ratliff of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Shannon Harrison Ratliff II, and his wife, Rémi Abbott Ratliff, Rosemary Kokernot Ratliff, Claire Elizabeth Kokernot Ratliff, and Sarah Kokernot; and great-grandchildren, Caroline Abbott Ratliff and Shannon Harrison Ratliff III.
