Dixie Neely, 83, of Corpus Christi, and formerly of Cuero, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004.
She was born in Karnes City on Sept. 25, 1921 to Tom and Lilly Lucas.
She is survived by her children, Pat Davis (George) of Gatesville, and Jerry Neely (Barbara), Rodney Neely, and Sam Neely, all of Corpus Christi; brother, Quinon Lucas (Carol) of Cuero; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Neely; and grandson, David Reynolds.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 28 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Service will also be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Clinton Cemetery, with Rev. Ron Welborn officiating. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Vera M. Powell
Vera Myrtle Powell, 81, of Cuero, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004.
She was born on May 6, 1923 in DeWitt County to the late William B. Sr. and Agnes Johnson Terrell. She was a teacher’s aide and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
She is survived by her nieces, Charlene Van of Cuero and Jean Rodgers Lewis of Kansas City, Missouri; and nephews, Otward W. Brown Jr., James Wesley Brown, and Charles K. Brown, all of Cuero, and Everett Roy Brown of Victoria.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Powell; parents; sisters, Eloise Brown, Julia Rodgers, Margaret Terrell; and brother, Willie Terrell Jr.
Visitation was Tuesday, Dec. 28 at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, with Rev. D. Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Pleasantville Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Etta V. Pairett
Etta Vernell Pairett, 75, of Cuero, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2004.
She was born Oct. 20, 1929, in Lindenau, to the late Eddie and Leona Goehring Leick. She was a homemaker and a Lutheran.
Survivors: husband, William Albert Pairett Jr.; sister, Velda Tieken of Lindenau.

Edward Herman Kuss
Edward Herman Kuss, 82, of Victoria, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004.
He was born in Girardeau, Missouri on June 12, 1922 to the late John Sr. and Frances Einsel Kuss. He worked in construction as a pipe fitter.
He is survived by his step-son, James M. Hodge of Richland, Washington; nine nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary L. Mason Kuss; parents; sisters, Justine Melton, Dorothy Laurentius, Juliana Kuss, Mariann Kuss; and brother, John Kuss Jr.
Graveside services will be Thursday, Dec. 30 at 10 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery, with John Glaze officiating.

Evelyn Martelle Pennington
Evelyn Martelle Pennington, 84, of Austin, passed away June 13, 2002, after a four-year battle with Parkinson's disease.
She was born in Caneyville, Kentucky on November 18, 1917 to the late Clarence and Hallie Quiggins. Mrs. Pennington was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cuero for many years where her husband, C. M. Pennington, was a deacon until his death in 1966. She was currently a member of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Austin.
She lived in Cuero until 1969 when she moved to Austin. She worked for many years as an administrative assistant for Woodward Furniture Company in Austin until she retired in 1980.
Mrs. Pennington is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Sam Jones of Austin; her grandson, Brent Edward Jones of Dallas; and cousins, Jane and Paul Laine of Missouri City, Thad Crow, Mickey and Dick Sweeden of Temple, and Ann Frances and Leon Jones of Kentucky.
She was preceded by her parents and her husband.
A visitation was held Friday, June 14 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel, 213 N. Gonzales St, Cuero. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15, at the Chapel. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero under the direction of Freund Funeral Home (361) 275-2343.
Pallbearers will be Don DeBerry, Sam Jones, Brent Jones, Ronnie Ledbetter, Huey Wilkinson, and Dudley McDougal.

Ervin Oliver, 98, of Yorktown, died Sunday, June 9, 2002.
He was born June 2, 1904, in Goliad, to the late John and Margaret Barefield Oliver. He was a farmer.
Survivors: sons, Leonard Oliver of Yorktown and Alton Oliver of Alvin; and one grandchild.
Preceded in death by: wife, Maybelle Langum Oliver; daughters, Julia Mae Oliver, Delores Oliver, Willa Mae Oliver and Mattie Oliver; one grandchild; and parents.

Jeremy N. Sturges
Jeremy Norton Sturges, 64, a real estate broker and resident of Cuero and Houston, died suddenly at his home in Houston on June 11, 2002.
He was Senior Broker Associate for Commercial Properties with the Eling Corporation in its Houston and Cuero offices. Mr. Sturges had a business career of over 40 years in commercial and investment banking and real estate firms in Connecticut, New York, Florida and Texas. Born in New York City and raised in Southport, CT, he was a graduate of St. George's School, Newport, RI, and the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. He was also a graduate of the Williams College School of Banking and the New York Institute of Finance.
Active in professional and community organizations in both Houston and Cuero, he was a member of Houston Assn. of Realtors, Texas Mini Storage Assn. and First Presbyterian Church in Cuero.
Mr. Sturges is survived by his wife, Margaret 'Missi' Thomas Sturges of Cuero; two brothers, Michael Dimon Sturges of Old Lyme, CT, and David Kountze Sturges of Southport, CT; two step-daughters, Debra Voelkel Benge of Denver, CO, and Dinah Voelkel of Dallas, TX; two nephews, Michael Dimon Sturges, Jr. of Grand Isle, VT, Jeffrey Frederick Sturges, Ivoryton, CT, and three nieces, Suzette Sturges Cowley of North Stonington, CT, Kimberly Sturges Arsenault, Voluntown, CT, and Melissa Kobe Sturges, Burlington, VT; and mother-in-law, Anne Friar Thomas.

Eloyd Trevino, Jr.
Eloyd Trevino, Jr., age 39, of Cuero, died Sunday, June 16, 2002.
He was born on April 2, 1963 to Eloyd Sr. and Tillie Trevino, of Cuero. He was an electrical engineer for Commercial Plants. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
He is survived by daughter, Elicia Trevino of Cuero; son, Nicholas Trevino of Cuero; grandchild, Emerald Trevino; mother, Tillie Trevino; father and step-mother, Eloyd Sr. and Inez Trevino; sisters, Sylvia Ann Rickman of Victoria, Sally Lee of Cuero, and Debbie Trevino of Round Rock; and brother, David Wayne Trevino.

Amelia A. Hairell, 93, of Yoakum, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2002.
She was born in Lavaca County to the late Oscar and Amelia Leist Kuenstler. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
She is survived by daughters, Mildred Mueller, Ruby Ford, Lillian Kopecky, Anne Schlinke, Amye Schlinke, all of Yoakum, and Doris Palmer of Cuero; sons, Oscar Hairell, Sr., James Hairell, Sr., and Wilbern Hairell, all of Yoakum; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Ollie Hairell; son, Waymen Wesley Hairell; grandson, Lee DeBord; great-grandsons, Quinton DeBord and Clinton DeBord; and brothers, Emil Kuenstler and Felix Kuenstler.

Isaac M. Groves
Isaac M. Groves, 73, of Cuero, died Thursday, June 13, 2002.
He was born Aug. 9, 1928, in Ada, Okla., to the late John and Oma Willis Groves. He was an installer/repairman for 36 years for Southwestern Bell in Lubbock, Fort Stockton, Victoria and Odessa. He served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Marine Corps.
Survivors: wife, Marion Livesay Groves; daughters, Jackie Stewart and husband Steven and Sheila Cooper and husband Rusty, all of Cuero; son, Ike Groves of Yuma, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: brother, Horace Groves; and sister, Bernice Jones.

Lucas Valdez Naranjo
Lucas Valdez Naranjo was reunited with his heavenly father on June 12, 2002.
Throughout his mere twenty one years, he had a love of art, music, sports, and wrestling. Lucas graced the lives of everyone he touched, from his days at Yorktown ISD throughout his successful career at Continental Airlines. Lucas showed dignity, respect and undying compassion to all he met. His wonderful yet sometimes sarcastic sense of humor always shone through all of his days. He graced the lives of his dear mom and stepfather, Irene and Guadalupe Vasquez, and his dad, Guadalupe "Wally" Naranjo. "Goo-tee" will forever be present in the lives of his sisters, Maria and Virginia, his brothers-in-law or sometimes "partners in crime," Danny Stirneman and Sean Oaks, and his beautiful nieces and nephew, Hailey Marie Stirneman, Madison Allyse Oaks (Madi) and Ryan Walter Stirneman (Bruno).
He is survived by "Grammas" Teresa Naranjo and Beatriz Valdez, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and an abundance of friends.
The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, support and prayers for the past twenty one years.

Leonard D. Black, 72, of Yorktown, and formerly of Nixon, died Friday, June 15, 2002.
He was born March 5, 1930, in Leesville, to the late Rev. Ira and Jessie Marsh Black. He was a retired toolpusher for Rocket Workover, Inc. and a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Yorktown.
Survivors: step-daughter, Jerrie Lynn Carfagno of Gillett; sons, Kevin Black of McKinney, Leonard D. Black Jr. of Wilcox, Ariz. and Davey Black of Runge; step-son, James Hall of Gillett; brother, Elder Ray Black of Corpus Christi; 11 grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and numerous great-grandchildren.
