W. C. "Dog" Schaefer

Dog died the way he lived...on his own terms with no apologies and with courage. Anyone who knew Dog realized that what you saw was exactly what you got. He was incapable of pretense and was often honest to a fault. However, his family and friends knew always that they could count on him.
Dog made his first appearance in Cuero on April 30, 1924, the first child of Fritz and Blanche Schaefer. He grew up in Cuero, leaving home in 1941 to attend Texas A&M University.
However, as soon as he was old enough, Dog enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in World War II. He was a turret gunner on the B24 Bomber, flying on several missions to Germany while stationed in England. One of the most decorated men in South Texas, Dog received three Distinguished Flying Crosses and a Silver Star. He was honorably discharged in 1944.
After the war, Dog continued his college career at Texas A&I in Kingsville where he graduated in 1949. In 1948, he met the love of his life, Jo Beth Fannett, at the Doll House in Cuero. He and Jo Beth married in 1949 and had three daughters, Sharon Lou, Linda Gayle and Carla Jo.
In 1955, Dog and his family moved to Temple, where Dog ran the Dairy Grill and later several other restaurants. Serving the best hamburgers in town, the Dairy Grill is still remembered fondly by its old customers. He and Jo Beth returned to Cuero in 1977 where Dog ran his own promotional products business.
Dog's second love was golf, which he pursued with a dogged passion until ill health forced him to put up his clubs. He moved to Austin in 1999 to be closer to his daughters. He died on Tuesday, December 17 surrounded by his family who loved him very much.
