Calvin Johnson
Calvin Johnson, 72, of Cuero, died Thursday, August 14, 2003.
He was born December 17, 1930 in DeWitt County to the late Oscar Lee and Eddie Mae Arkadie Johnson. He was a chef for the Dixie Cafe in Cuero, Nolans Steakhouse in Corpus Christi for 17 years, Keeslers for 1 years, and the Cuero Country Club for 25 years. He rededicated his life on August 11, 2003 and joined Mt. Bethany Baptist Church in Thomaston.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Anthony Johnson of Knoxville, Tennessee; daughters, Irister V. Johnson, Millie Johnson, and Petra Johnson, all of San Antonio, Ora Lee Johnson and Ora Mae Green, both of Cuero, and Hattie Battles of Seattle, Washington; sons, Calvin Johnson Jr. and Glance Johnson, both of Knoxville, Tennessee, Ray B. Johnson of Angie, Louisiana, and Ernest Charles of Corpus Christi; sisters, Ora Slade Franklin and Kathryn Scott, both of Cuero; half-sister, Ella Mae McGee of Houston; 20 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Louis Lana Johnson.

Lorena P. Miller
Lorena Prewett Miller, 93, of Cuero, and formerly of San Antonio, died Thursday, August 14, 2003.
She was born on October 15, 1909 in Concrete to the late Marshall E. and Lula Taylor Prewett. She worked as a secretary for Alamo Lumber Company in San Antonio. She was a Methodist.
She is survived by her nieces, Barbara M. Hill of Victoria, Rebecca Jo Hanys of Wharton, and Jackie Murray Lamb of Cuero, and nephews, David L. Maxey and Mickey R. Maxey, both of Victoria, Robert E. Maxey of Shiner, and Dale A. Murray of Cuero.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Bonnie Maxey and Reba (Rebecca) Murray; and brother, Marshall Prewett.

Mrs. Juanita W. Smith
Mrs. Juanita W. Smith, 84, of San Antonio, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2003.
She was born November 25, 1918 to the parentage of Samuel Williams and Dora Matthews in Sutherland Springs. She later met and united in holy matrimony with Herbert S. Smith, who pastored Macedonia Baptist Church in Cuero for many years until his retirement and also was President of Guadalupe Bible College for many years.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Herbert S. Smith, and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 5 from 5 - 9 p.m. in the O. J. Carter Memorial Chapel located inside the Carter-Taylor-Williams Mortuary, 601 N. Center St. in San Antonio. Wake services will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday in the O. J. Carter Memorial Chapel.
Services are scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Greater Love Missionary Baptist Church, 1534 Peck Avenue in San Antonio, with the Rev. L. J. Gillespie officiating. Interment will be at Meadowlawn Memorial Park in San Antonio. Carter-Taylor-Williams Mortuary, San Antonio, 210-227-7311.
Willie C. Pickens, Jr.
Memorial services for Willie C. Pickens, Jr. of Austin, formerly of Cuero, were held Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003 at Greater Swenson Grove Baptist Church in Austin. Rev. T.E. King officiated.
The funeral will be Thursday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m. at the L.E. Meador Encampment Grounds in Cuero with burial at Hillside Cemetery. Rev. Lee Yarbrough will officiate and Freund Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Born August 8, 1950, Mr. Pickens was 53 at the time of his death August 30. He was an analyst with the Internal Revenue Service and a member of Greater Swenson Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Ross Pickens of Austin; parents Willie and Lorraine Lewis Pickens, Sr. of Cuero; a daughter, Catrina Pickens, and a son, Shay Pickens, both of Austin.
Also surviving are three brothers, Joe Pickens of Dallas, Roy Pickens of Victoria and Gary Pickens of Dallas.
Mr. Pickens served in the Texas National Guard for 20 years before retiring from that organization.
Pallbearers will include Jimmy King, Jr., Chancey Lewis, Larry Pickens, Sammy Pickens, Donrell Thomas, and Eugene Wesley. Honorary pallbearers will be Lawrence Blackwell, Clyde King, Kenneth King, Marvin King, Maurice King, Don Pickens, Michael Pickens and Ernest Lewis.
Mary Lois Magouirk
Mary Lois Magouirk of Cuero and Yorktown died on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at the Cuero Hospital after a short illness.
She was born November 29, 1913 to the late Carrie Watts Durham and DeWitt Durham in Clarksville, Tenn.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty J. Angerstein of Yorktown; granddaughter, Mary Jo Warren and husband Doug Warren of Yorktown; granddaughter, Phyllis Ann Nesbitt of Laconia, New Hampshire; great-granddaughters Kalie Ray Nesbitt of Laconia, New Hampshire, and Kendra Sawyer of Olympia, Washington; great-grandson, Jamy Wayne Warren of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; great-grandson, Todd Douglas Warren of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services were held at Memory Gardens of Cuero on Dec. 26, 2003.

Henry A. Schaffner
Henry A. Schaffner, 72, of Cuero, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003.
He was born Sept. 2, 1931, in Westhoff, to the late Henry A. Sr. and Josephine Mader Schaffner. He was a carpenter and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Survivors: wife, Dorothy Ebrom Schaffner; daughter, Donna Faye Brandstetter of Cuero; sister, Rosline Guenther of Cuero; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: sister, Lillie Copeland; and brothers, Alfred Schaffner, Robert Schaffner, and Johnnie Schaffner.

Ruby Laurel Wolf
Ruby Laurel Wolf, 79, passed away Dec. 26, 2003.
She was born January 6, 1924 in Cuero to Oscar and Minnie Cady. She was a life long member of the Tops Club of Corpus Christi.
Mrs. Wolf was preceded in death by her first husband, George E. Laurel Sr., her second husband, Claire Wolf; and her son, George E. Laurel Jr.
She is survived by her sons, Matthew (Phyllis) Laurel of La Coste, James (Mary Lee) Laurel of Mathis, Arthur Lee (Chestine) Laurel Sr. of Corpus Christi, William Ray (Susanna) Laurel Sr. of Mathis, and David M. (Sandra) Laurel of Dallas; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wild also leaves behind her sister, Lovelyn Fay Hermes of Rockport, and her brother, Charles Lee Barfield Sr. of Yoakum.

Elvin Mathis
Elvin Mathis, 60, of Cuero, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003.
He was born Jan. 25, 1943 in DeWitt County to the late Joe Albert Sr. and Loverne Beasley Mathis. He worked in shipping and receiving at the Gulf Coast Paper Company. He was a member of Little Zion Baptist Church.
He is survived by his sister, Shirley Coleman of San Antonio, and brothers, Rex Mathis and Victor Mathis, both of Cuero, Larry Mathis of Austin, and Joe A. Mathis Jr. of Victoria.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Esther Polk and Dorothy Coleman.

Helen Parr Hoehne, 66, of Cuero, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003.
She was born Jan. 29, 1937, in Cuero, to the late Leonard and Maggie Casey Parr. She was a homemaker and a member of Hermann Sons in Nordheim.
Survivors: husband, Walter F. Hoehne Sr.; daughter, Jo Ann Hoehne of Victoria; sons, Michael Hoehne of Lockhart and Walter Hoehne Jr. of Victoria; sister, Mary Michalek of Cuero; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: sister, Lottie Meitzen, and brothers, Enis Parr, Irl Parr, Leslie Parr, Oscar Parr, and Floyd Parr.

Rinie Miller Jones
Rinie Miller Jones, 79, passed away Dec. 20, 2003.
She was born Feb. 5, 1924 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late James Hugh and Rinie Arrington Miller. She graduated from Birmingham Southern College in Alabama. She owned and operated a flower shop in Houston for 44 years.
She is survived by her daughters, Marti Matz of Rowlett, Lori Coole of Groves, and Nancy Skinner and Victoria Ingram, both of Houston; sons, Gordon R. Jones of England and Greg Jones, Bradley Jones, and Steven Jones, all of Houston; daughter in law, Peggy Bullard of Cuero, widow of Jones’ son Roderick; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Jones; parents; and son, Roderick Jones.

Viola M. Cowey
Viola Martha Cowey, 83, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother slipped peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Monday, Oct. 25, 2004.

Viola was born in Stillwater, OK, on May 7, 1921, smack in the middle of six brothers. She was a retired Southwestern Bell employee who never met a stranger in her life! She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Samuel T. Cowey, whom she lovingly cared for during his fight against Parkinson’s Disease. Viola was a fighter and survived the Great Depression and three bouts with cancer, as well as multiple heart bypass and other surgeries. Viola was loving, caring, giving and always put others first. She was renowned for her sense of humor and kind spirit, and she will be greatly missed by those she leaves behind.
Survivors: brother, Alfred Eugene Cook and wife, Ann of Cuero, TX; daughter, Martha Polanovich and husband Paul of Bedford, TX; son, Sam Cowey Jr. and wife Betty of Ontario, CA; son, John Cowey and wife Barbara of Spring, TX; grandchildren, Paul Polanovich Jr. of Austin, Pryor Polanovich of Bedford, Julie Underwood and husband Corey of Austin, TX, Samuel Cowey III and wife Tracy of El Centro, CA, and his son, Keith of Colorado, Erica Cowey of Houston, Jessica Cowey of Houston; step-grandchildren, Katrinaa and Marcus Walters of Boerne and their children Evan and Lillie, Jennifer and Mark Nez of Houston, Lauren and husband Kenneth Boyce and their daughter Leyden of Houston, Sam Pack of Boerne; many cousins, nephews, and nieces such as Jeannie Hull Neitch and her husband Marvin, who were so important in her life but are too numerous to list here.

Merce Salas, 92, of Yorktown, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004.
She was born Oct. 28, 1911, in Yorktown, to the late Jose and Margarita Yanes. She was a homemaker and member of the Woodmen of the World. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Survivors: daughters, Ludy Garcia of Yorktown and Dora Altamirano of Victoria; sons, Ruben Salas of Yorktown, John Salas and E.P. Chavelo Salas, both of Victoria; sisters, Rachel Molina of Austin and Maggie Amador of San Antonio; brother, Gregory Yanes of Yorktown; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

James W. Baros
James Weldon Baros, 52, of Cuero, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004.
He was born May 17, 1952 in Cuero to the late Charlie P. and Beaulah Heider Baros. He was a roughneck in the oilfield.
Survivors: sons, Jimmy Baros of Meyersville and Charlie Baros of Victoria; brothers, Edmund Baros of Cuero and Charlie W. Baros of Port Lavaca; and one grandchild.
