Martha J. D. Spinks

Martha Jane Dees Spinks, 86, of Cuero, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003.
Mrs. Spinks was born March 29, 1917, in May Pearl to the late George Madison and Jenny Terry Dees. She was reared in Corpus Christi, where she attended Mary Carroll High School.
She married Herbert Spinks on November 4, 1936, in Cuero, Texas, where they lived the majority of their life together. Mrs. Spinks was a devoted and loving mother and an exceptional grandparent and great-grandparent.
Survivors: daughters, Dianna Sue Bartosh, of Cuero, Linda Ruschhaupt and husband Glenn, of Meyersville, and Glenda Heinold and husband Joe of Victoria; grandchildren, Michael and Candy Cowley of Meyersville, Christy and John Michael Salazar and Katy Heinhold, all of Victoria, Michael and Amber Bartosh of Denver, Colorado; and two great-grandchildren, Arianna Salazar and J. Burns Cowley.
Preceded in death by: husband, Herbert Spinks; daughter, Mary Lee Spinks; son, Billy Ray Spinks; parents; sisters, Georgia Lee West and Mary Elizabeth Scogin; and brothers, James Harold Dees and Marion Luther Dees.
Visitation was Wednesday, August 6 at Freund Funeral Home chapel. Services were Thursday at the funeral home chapel, the Rev. Nick Wagner of St. John's Lutheran Church in Meyersville officiated. Burial was at Clinton Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers: Michael Cowley, John Michael Salazar, Michael Bartosh, James Moore, Terry Ford, and Hugh Freeland Jr.

Harvey L. Krejci Sr.

Harvey L. Krejci Sr., 79, of Cuero, died Saturday, August 9, 2003.
He was born in Shiner to the late Charles and Mary Vana Krejci. He worked for Wagner Hardware and the DeWitt Electric Cooperative. He retired in 1987. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, American Legion Dinter Post #3, Cuero V.F.W. Post #3972, Cuero Chapter AARP, and Cuero Hospital Auxiliary.
He graduated from Moulton High School and had a business degree. He served in the Army during World War II. He served in in the European-African Middle Eastern Theater. His awards include: EAME Campaign Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon, and two Overseas Service Bars.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Motal Krejci of 59 years; daughter, Vivian Ann Cliffe and husband James of Victoria; son, Harvey Louis Krejci Jr. and wife Debbie of Lake Jackson; grandchildren, of Carla Hanes and husband Mike of Victoria, Candy LeFebvre and husband Mike of San Antonio, and Kevin, Keith, and Kasey Krejci of Lake Jackson; great-grandchildren, Marett, Cabott, Rhett, and Ellie Hanes of Victoria, and Lesley Langenberg of San Antonio; brothers, Charles and wife Mary of Pasadena, Edward and wife Jeanette of Edna, Arlin and wife Daisy of Katy; and sister-in-law, Lorene Krejci of Houston.
Preceded in death by parents and a brother, Milton Krejci.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 13 from 6 - 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. A rosary will follow at 7 p.m. Services will be Thursday, August 14 at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Irene L. Atkinson

Irene Leggett Atkinson, 96, of Cuero, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003.
She was born May 7, 1907, in Greenville, to the late Fred and Mae Reed Leggett.
Survivors: daughter, Jane Esterak; sons, Donald Atkinson of Victoria, Fred Atkinson of Pencil Bluff, Ark., Jasper Atkinson of Calallen, and James Atkinson of Robstown; sister, Ruby Spiers of Corpus Christi; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Hoy L. Atkinson; five sisters; and one brother.
Graveside services were Saturday, August 9 at Robstown Cemetery. Sawyer-George Funeral Home, Calallen, 361-242-3205.

Ruth C. Hankammer

Ruth C. Hankammer, 69, of Yorktown, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003.
She was born September 5, 1933, in Yorktown, to the late Rev. Carl and Lydia Adix Hankammer. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, Oscar Hahn of Port Lavaca.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Marie Hankammer and Norma Hahn.
Visitation was Sunday, August 10 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home chapel. Services were Monday at the funeral home chapel, the Rev. Ernie Lantz officiated. Burial was at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.
Pallbearers: Dalton Metting, Otto Bolting, Anton Heil, Calvin Sachtleben, Wilfred Lampbrecht, and Stanley Johnson.

Ernest E. Lewis

Ernest Edwin "Bub" Lewis, 52, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003.
He was born Dec. 16, 1950, in Cuero, to Virgie Mae Lewis of Austin and the late Chancey Lewis Sr. He graduated from Cuero High School in 1969 and attended Prairie View University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and worked at Alcoa, Pacific Rail Road, and United Parcel Service.
Survivors: former wife, Patricia Gant Black; daughter, Candice Monique Lewis of Cuero; stepdaughter, Traci Gant of Cuero; son, Ryan Ernest Lewis of Houston; and brothers, the Rev. Chancey Lewis III of Austin and Carlton Wayne Lewis of Cuero.
Graveside services with military honors were Wednesday, Dec. 17 at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery, the Rev. Rex D. Johnson officiated. Memorial Funeral Home, San Antonio, 210-226-4071.

Guadalupe Bazan

Guadalupe Bazan, 93, of Cuero and formerly of Port Lavaca, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003.
He was born Oct. 12, 1910, in Runge, to the late Antonio and Gregoria Martinez Bazan. He worked in maintenance for Brown & Root and was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Survivors: daughters, Lupe Cox and Elpidia Olguin, both of Cuero; sister, Louisa B. Castellno of Pharr; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Preceded in death by: wife, Andrea Orta Bazan; and sister, Antonia Bazan.
A rosary was recited Wednesday, Dec. 17 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers: Mario Olguin, Eddie Olguin, Rena Olguin, Fabian Olguin, Michael Olguin, and Carlos Taylor.

Edna T. Noack

Edna T. Noack, 71, of Cuero, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003.
She was born May 15, 1932, in Dilworth, to Leona Maeker Noack of Cuero and the late Alvin T. Noack Sr. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Survivors: brothers, Alvin Noack of Cuero and Pete C. Noack of Shiner.
Preceded in death by: sister, Dorothy Lee San Ramon; and brother, Alton Noack.
Visitation was Friday at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Saturday at the funeral home chapel, the Rev. William Hill officiated. Burial was at Westhoff Community Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers were David Noack, Dwayne Noack, Gary Noack, Bubba Noack, Carlton Albrecht, and Leroy Hewig.

Henry Varela

Henry Varela Sr., 90, of Cuero died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003.
He was born October 18, 1913 in San Diego, Texas to the late Magdaleno and Logina Bazan Varela. He was a member of the Catholic Community and a long-time member of the Woodmen of the World.
He is survived by his sons, Henry Varela Jr. and Ismael Varela, both of Cuero; daughter, Eva Varela of Mendoza; sister, Mary Barron of Fort Worth; two grandsons, Michael “Chito” Varela and Joseph Varela, both of Cuero; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Fernandez Varela; and brothers, Marcello Varela, Pete Varela, and Gabriel Barela.
A rosary was recited Friday, Dec. 19 at the Freund Funeral Home. The funeral Mass was Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiated. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery under the direction of Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers were Marcello Varela Jr., Danny Varela, David Varela, Johnny Varela, Mary Varela Clark, Ricky Varela, Ismael Varela, and Jesse Martinez.
Honorary pallbearers were grandsons, Michael “Chito” Varela and Joseph Varela.

Edna Jansky

Edna Jansky, 84, of Yorktown, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003.
She was born Jan. 29, 1919, in Yorktown, to the late Emil and Bertha Gerbert Wieland Sr. She was a homemaker and member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Survivors: daughters, Shirley Ibrom of Port Lavaca, Patricia Ibrom of Portland, and Margie Culpepper of Smiley; son, Donald Jansky of Yorktown; sister, Frieda Bevil of Yorktown; brother, Raymond Wieland of Yorktown; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Charles Jansky; son, Charles Ray Jansky; sister, Wilhemina Wilems; brothers, Gilbert Wieland, Emil Wieland, Willie Wieland, and Alfred Wieland; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation was Friday, Dec. 19 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Yorktown. Burial was at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Ella Pakebusch

Ella Pakebusch, 94, of Yorktown, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003.
She was born Oct. 25, 1909, in Westhoff, to the late Oswald and Janie Meyer Podsim. She was a seamstress at Kingston Factory and member of Hermann Sons Lodge and St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Survivors: stepdaughter, Evelyn Hengst of Hewitt; stepson, Dennis Ray Pakebusch of Cuero; brother, Walter Podsim of Yorktown; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Hugo Louis Pakebusch; sister, Annie Podsim; and brother, Albert Podsim.
Visitation was Friday, Dec. 19 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Saturday at the funeral home chapel. Burial was at Westhoff Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Maydelle Green Manning

Maydelle Green Manning, 77, of Pasadena, passed away Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003 in Pasadena, Texas.
She was a member of the Baptist faith, Pythian Sisters Lodge. Maydelle had a wonderful sense of humor, enjoyed cooking, sewing, and joking with people.
She is survived by her loving husband, Melvin Manning of 57 year whom she married October 6, 1946 in Yoakum; son, Doug Manning and wife Sheryl; daughter, Shelia Swann Thompson and husband Tommy; grandchildren, Jennifer and Lauren Manning, Jason and Travis Swann, and Austen Thompson; and great-grandchildren, Reid and Tate Swann.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Woodson and Lela Green.
Visitation was Monday, Dec. 22 at Pasadena Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life was held Tuesday at the funeral home chapel. Graveside services followed at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero. Pasadena Funeral Chapel, Pasadena, 713-473-6206.

Paul F. Waltersdorf

Paul Freidrich Waltersdorf, 84, of Cuero, died Friday, April 30, 2004.
He was born May 4, 1919, in Runge, to the late Charlie and Bertha Waltersdorf. He was a mechanic and a Lutheran.
Survivors: wife, Sophie Waltersdorf; and daughters, Mary Ann Waltersdorf of Yorktown and Jane Waltersdorf of Cuero.
Preceded in death by: sisters, Emma Kann and Minnie Michalek; and brothers, Emil Waltersdorf, Otto Waltersdorf, and Herman Waltersdorf.
Graveside services were Monday, May 3 at Nordheim Cemetery, Pastor Steve Byrne officiated. Burial was at Nordheim Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Wilma Frels Barth

Wilma Frels Barth died in Lake Jackson on May 3, 2004, after a short illness.
She was born in DeWitt County to Willie and Bertha Rathkamp Frels on June 26, 1916.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leonard G. Barth on July 21, 1995; her parents; her brother, Oscar Frels, who died in childhood; and by her brother, Edmund Frels on Feb 26, 2002.
She is survived by her sister Norma Frels Steinmann of Yoakum; her two daughters and their husbands, Faye Barth and John Mathews of Bedford and JoAnn Barth and Thomas L. McDonald of Alvin; grandchildren, Dwight and Ashley Mathews Alford of Flower Mound, Regan and Sarah Mathews of Wichita, Kansas, Tom McDonald of Rosharon, Craig L. McDonald M.D. of Lake Jackson, and Darlene Smith of Richwood; great-grandchildren, Colin and Brynn Alford, Lauren and Coleman Mathews and Hannah Rose McDonald; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and her extended family and friends.
She was a devoted life long member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Yoakum, Mrs. Barth and her husband were farmers, ranchers, and dairymen at Concrete until Mr. Barth retired at age 72.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 5 at 2:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Yoakum with Burial at the Nelms Cemetery at Concrete. Visitation was Tuesday, May 4 at Buffington Funeral Home in Yoakum.
Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
